Baylor landing Jalen Hurd might as well have been 'highway robbery'

When SicEm365 began to receive news that Baylor was the favorite to land Tennessee transfer Jalen Hurd, it was hard to believe he was choosing the Bears over a program like Ohio State for Baylor fans.

Try SicEm365 for $1.00!

According to a quote by assistant coach Evan Cooper in an article written by Matt Hayes of Bleacher Report, the Baylor coaches were surprised by the commitment as well. After a stop by Waco for a quick visit, Hurd left the staff to head to California before calling a short time later to give him his commitment.

"Out of the blue," Cooper said. "He gets here, and we show him the campus; he meets and talks with the coaches and goes back to the hotel. Four hours, tops. Later that night, I get a call, he says: 'Hey, coach, I'm coming. I don't need to see anything else.'"

Cooper went on to say that after having him on campus for a few months, it was still hard to believe the type of player they were able to land for a single season when he could have gone on to the NFL as a first-round draft pick at the time.

"A few months later, after the first day of fall camp, we all look at each other like, he's better than we ever could've imagined," Cooper added.

Recently named one of the best pure athletes in the country by NFL.com, Hurd was timed at 4.45 seconds in the 40-yard dash, measured 10-10 in the broad jump, and timed less than four seconds in the 20-yard dash, something only three players accomplished at this year's NFL combine.

Hurd is attempting to reinvent himself with his move from running back to wide receiver for his final season of college football after leaving Tennesse with over 3,100 total yards and 26 total touchdowns in less than three seasons.

Expectations are extremely high for playing a new position, but Hurd put that on himself with athletic ability and production in what many consider the toughest football conference in the country.

"I'm telling you, we got away with highway robbery," Cooper said. "Literally, this might be the most talented player I have ever seen."

something must be wrong with him. Why would a good player transfer to a team that lost to Liberty?

Did I do it right?

Maybe he's the kind of player that saw what a difference maker he could be on a team that we went 1-11. Suppose we go 7-5 and go to a decent bowl. Who would be credited for that? Who would get the focus? And if, by some miracle, he gets into the Heisman race, his draft stock would go way up. All these things are long shots, certainly, but you never know.

And with Mims stretching the field we could do some damage in the middle. My biggest concerns are will the line hold up and will Brewer be all what they say.

I am thrilled to have Hurd on campus.

Valentin is the most important transfer. Regardless of his status, starter or bench player, he is better than any our OL during 2017.

His health will determine if we are bowl eligible, or if we scramble for 5 wins.

I predict Valentin will not be one of our top 5 offensive linemen next year. In fact, I could see 8-9 better than him. That is not a knock on Valentin, but I think players that have been in the Rhule system for 2 years will start to show results. In no order

Blackmar
Lawrence
Fruhmorgen
Tecklenberg
Newman
Malin
Beard
Keith

I could see all of those being better and I am probably leaving someone out. Offensive linemen take time to mature and become beasts. It is rare when a first year guy lives up to the hype.

A starter on Clemson's team is probably a much better bet.

I said this on the other thread but...

Holy cow are we starting to get back to actual football talk with real live student athletes on the team we support !?!?

Man this feels good I forgot all about fandom.

Ps. Hurd will either have a killer year with an accurate passer or our offense will continue to lack identity and he wont get more than 50 or so yards a game on average.

I hope for the former. his film is so fun to watch. Havent had that much fun watching since coco.

You forgot to say that you are a realist and expect disaster, but will gladly eat crow if you are wrong.

I would say that Platt stretches the field even more, and opens up the middle for both Mims and Hurd.

We need some guys to contest jump balls in the red zone. Maybe Hurd is that guy. Hopefully one of the tight ends as well.

I bet he already got himself some of that insurance protection for injury, like $200 million as good as this kid is.

Would prefer that the insurance premium he pays does as much good for him as the money I spend on lottery tickets does for me.

Great

not only do we condone r8pe but now we are robbers of NFL caliber players. Not to self, no giving 2nd chances or stealing from good people like SEC either.

Just cant win no matter what we try

Seriously on your first paragraph I am curious if Rhule is very successful here that we get labeled as cheaters again. It's bound to happen when little ole Baylor beats the bluebloods.

Personally if I were him I would have taken the million$ right now. That said, I am thrilled he came to us and I hope he has a 2,500 yard season along with Mims and Platt going for 1,500 yards a piece. Hey, a guy can dream, right?

I'm so glad the team has a more positive attitude than some of the "fans" (frog or horn trolls?) on these boards. I just hope none of the players or coaches waste their time here!

Although last year was terrible overall, there were moments of greatness. Anyone at the OU or W Virginia games saw that--and the mood was palpable: it was so great to see the fan enthusiasm shooting out the "Boomer Sooner"s at the end of the BM show and cheering the team as they left the field.

It was also wonderful to watch Platt, Mims, and others make great plays all season long. Yes, those plays were too few and far between but they were also reminders that we have great athletes on the team capable of doing great things. I fully expect to see more of that this Fall--and a much better final record, including the real possibility of a bowl game.

Brewer + Hurd is an amazing combo.

Rhule just needs to get the O-line to step up and we might be surprised.

The O-line has gotten bigger, older, and added more college experience. They should take a considerable step forward this season.
