Matt Rhule updates status of Brewer, Malin following injuries

Baylor head coach Matt Rhule told the media on Monday morning during the Big 12 Football Teleconference that sophomore quarterback Charlie Brewer sustained a back injury against Abilene Christian, but after evaluation is expected to practice fully and play against UTSA on Saturday. 

Rhule also provided an update on senior offensive lineman Josh Malin who was injured on the second play from scrimmage in the season opener. According to Rhule, Malin has an MCL injury and is expected to miss four weeks in recovery at minimum.

The good news for Malin, however, is that the injury was not season ending.

Brewer received the start against Abilene Christian and completed 8 of 15 passes for 138 yards and an interception while rotating with senior Jalan McClendon. The two are again expected to split snaps against UTSA on Saturday according to Rhule.

Malin started at left tackle for the Bears against ACU.

Brewer must be showing things in practice that didn't manifest on the field on Saturday. Otherwise, McClendon seems the obvious choice to start and letting Brewer rest and recalibrate seems optimal.

Hurd's blocking penalty on that first drive killed the momentum for Brewer to cause that first drive to stall. Could not recover from a first and 25. That may have set the tone for momentum for Brewer for his next series.

One the other hand, McClendon must have been showing things in practice that got him listed as co-starter, while we all figured it was just complimentary, throw-him-a-bone kinda thing.
