Bears continue hot start with victory over UTSA, 63-14

September 7, 2019

WACO, Texas – Baylor continued their hot start to the season with an all-around impressive victory against the UTSA Roadrunners, 63-14.

Shot out of the gate: Charlie Brewer came out swinging in this game. In the first quarter, he threw for 57 yards while completing 5 of his 7 pass attempts. He found Denzel Mims wide open in the corner of the endzone to give the Bears an early 7-0 lead. To cap it off, he made an incredible read on the following drive on a read option and punched it into the endzone to give the Bears a 14-0 lead to start the game. Brewer finished with 1 rushing and 3 passing touchdowns, while completing 12 of his 16 passes for 163 yards.

Struggled: The Bears, once again, had very few struggles in this game. The offense was electric, and the defense was swarming. However, the Bears’ defense late in the game struggled. They were able to prevent the Roadrunners from scoring any points until there were just 3 seconds left in the 3rdquarter. Following the first UTSA touchdown, The Bears then gave up a 54-yard touchdown run on the following drive.

Decisive Moment: Trestan Ebner’s 55-yard run on the Bears’ second drive of the game proved to be a game changer. Both the Bears and the Roadrunners stalled on their first two offensive possessions with three-and-outs. The Bears had a net of 0 yards until Ebner took off for a 55-yard run that set up a 9-yard touchdown pass to Denzel Mims. From that point on, the offense was rolling and the Bears were able to run away with the game.

MVP: Denzel Mims was the MVP in this game for his sensational performance in the first half. It was clear from the start that the Roadrunner’s did not match up with Mims’ size and skill. The Bears from the get-go seemed to have a plan to target Mims as much as possible. In the first half alone, Mims had 7 catches for 101 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Key stat: The UTSA Roadrunners had 6 three-and-outs that were followed by Baylor touchdowns. This was the story of the game. The Baylor defense would barely let the UTSA offense breathe throughout the better part of this game. Not only that, but the Baylor offense would then follow with a strike of their own. These touchdown drives after Roadrunner three-and-outs accounted for 437 yards and 42 points for the Bears.

Game Notes:

  • Last season, the Bears beat the UTSA Roadrunners on the road 37-20.
  • The turf temperature before the game was 181.4 degrees.
  • Grayland Arnold’s 73-yard punt return touchdown was the first Baylor punt return touchdown since Levi Norwood’s in 2013.
  • With a 35-0 lead going into the 2ndhalf, the Bears subbed Charlie Brewer out for Gerry Bohanon.
  • The last time the Bears scored 63 points or more was on the road against Kansas in 2015, where they won 66-7.
