WACO, Texas – Baylor continued their hot start to the season with an all-around impressive victory against the UTSA Roadrunners, 63-14.

Shot out of the gate: Charlie Brewer came out swinging in this game. In the first quarter, he threw for 57 yards while completing 5 of his 7 pass attempts. He found Denzel Mims wide open in the corner of the endzone to give the Bears an early 7-0 lead. To cap it off, he made an incredible read on the following drive on a read option and punched it into the endzone to give the Bears a 14-0 lead to start the game. Brewer finished with 1 rushing and 3 passing touchdowns, while completing 12 of his 16 passes for 163 yards.

Struggled: The Bears, once again, had very few struggles in this game. The offense was electric, and the defense was swarming. However, the Bears’ defense late in the game struggled. They were able to prevent the Roadrunners from scoring any points until there were just 3 seconds left in the 3rdquarter. Following the first UTSA touchdown, The Bears then gave up a 54-yard touchdown run on the following drive.

Decisive Moment: Trestan Ebner’s 55-yard run on the Bears’ second drive of the game proved to be a game changer. Both the Bears and the Roadrunners stalled on their first two offensive possessions with three-and-outs. The Bears had a net of 0 yards until Ebner took off for a 55-yard run that set up a 9-yard touchdown pass to Denzel Mims. From that point on, the offense was rolling and the Bears were able to run away with the game.

MVP: Denzel Mims was the MVP in this game for his sensational performance in the first half. It was clear from the start that the Roadrunner’s did not match up with Mims’ size and skill. The Bears from the get-go seemed to have a plan to target Mims as much as possible. In the first half alone, Mims had 7 catches for 101 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Key stat: The UTSA Roadrunners had 6 three-and-outs that were followed by Baylor touchdowns. This was the story of the game. The Baylor defense would barely let the UTSA offense breathe throughout the better part of this game. Not only that, but the Baylor offense would then follow with a strike of their own. These touchdown drives after Roadrunner three-and-outs accounted for 437 yards and 42 points for the Bears.

Game Notes:

  • Last season, the Bears beat the UTSA Roadrunners on the road 37-20.
  • The turf temperature before the game was 181.4 degrees.
  • Grayland Arnold’s 73-yard punt return touchdown was the first Baylor punt return touchdown since Levi Norwood’s in 2013.
  • With a 35-0 lead going into the 2ndhalf, the Bears subbed Charlie Brewer out for Gerry Bohanon.
  • The last time the Bears scored 63 points or more was on the road against Kansas in 2015, where they won 66-7.

"No struggles"

... Am I the only one who thinks the O-Line is our Achilles Heel and it'll become obvious when we face a Front 7 with real skill?

Brewer keeps getting hit. Running lanes struggle to be built. Our RBs are making things work because of their sheer talent

I think any 63 to 14 win qualifies you for "no struggles."

That's grasping at something to complain about.

We look very sharp, we haven't been tested by a good opponent yet, but we look sharp.

In light of our recent loses to Liberty U. & UTSA just 3 yrs ago we may be on a hot streak? But let's be clear we beat SFA who isn't in our league. Then we beat the team that beat Incarnate Word in UTSA. Next comes perennial loser Rice so let's not jump to hot streak land just yet.

So I guess you held the 2015 Baylor team accountable for losing to UCF and questioned if they'd win because of that embarrassing loss in 2013...get a grip.

Some people will ***** about things on this board regardless of the level of success you achieve. Yes, we easily won two games against easy competition, however, anyone with an eye for football can see this team is the best Rhule team at Baylor. Iowa St will be a good measure of where we're at this year. If you want to get 10 wins, you have to beat teams like K State, TCU, and maybe OSU on the road.

It's not a complaint for the sake of being heard.

This is without a doubt the best Rhule team to see the field so far and shows amazing promise across the board... EXCEPT O-Line which is lagging behind.

If we are content highlighting the great performances but not recognize the weak link, so be it.

But what I saw was a lot of missed blocks and lost battles by some folks in the trenches against a weak FCS team and bottom-of-FBS team.

The line has time to develop, especially before Big XII play, but I won't be surprised when Brewer starts getting sacked, forces throws, or has to throw it away.

It's not as bad as last year where Charlie had to scramble for his life every down, but it sure doesn't look comfortable.

9 touchdowns by Baylor in the 49-point win over UTSA is very impressive. Proof the Big XII is much better than C-USA. Offense, defense, and special teams continues to look great early in the 2019 college football season for the Baylor Bears. Plenty of skill and athleticism on full display with the QBs, RBs, and WRs. The new defensive alignments have been quite effective so far. The punter and placekicker look confident. It's a great time to be a Baylor football fan.

The Roadrunners were gambling big on pressure. They brought linebacker and edge blitzes about half of the the time...and they got punished for it. Charlie's quick reads hurt them time and time again. They were able to create pressure with blitzes, though.
