Matt Rhule Quote of the Week...

“I think they’ve embraced the 1-0 mindset because the outside importance on each game is only there if you win the previous ones, so it only stacks upon each other. But, I think it’s coming from the players. The fact that we can win and they can still not be satisfied is unbelievable and it’s hard to do. And as a coach, it keeps me in check. Sometimes, I come in like, ‘Hey, we won. And that was a hard game.’ And the guys are saying, ‘We need to do this better.’ I think that comes from the Sam Tecklenburgs and the Jordan Williams and the JaMycal Hastys and the Chris Platts and Denzel Mims and Blake Lynch, all those seniors that I was talking about. I think those guys are just really setting the bar high, and they’ve done it week-in and week-out. We had a level of intensity for UTSA that allowed this game to matter. If you don’t beat UTSA, then this game doesn’t really matter. I think they’ve handled that. And I think the thing that we’ve had to learn is when you’re a good team, people are going to do different things to you.”

Baylor’s Key Players

Quarterback #12 Charlie Brewer — The game plan utilized against Texas Tech last year is the kind of formula Baylor needs to try to emulate. This will all come down to Brewer’s ability to be precise and take advantage of the opportunities when they are presented. Last year against Oklahoma, he threw for 400 yards and had three touchdowns so he is plenty comfortable to have some success.

Wide Receiver #5 Denzel Mims — The Bears WR1 is about to get just what the doctored ordered which is a matchup against his favorite opponent, Oklahoma. In two games against the Sooners he has 22 receptions for 306 yards and four touchdowns. Mims has to come out and dominate them once again as the Bears are going to need to score points in this matchup. Mims can play a big role in that this weekend.

Defensive linemen #99 Bravvion Roy — This weekend against Oklahoma, the Bears will be facing one of the best yet youngest offensive lines in the Big 12. Best because they average nearly 250 yards on the ground and have only given up 10 sacks this season. Youngest because they start four redshirt sophomores and one redshirt freshman. Roy will be the oldest player up front along with Lockhart. His key matchup will be with future high NFL Draft pick center Creed Humphrey.

Safety #1 Grayland Arnold and #3 Chris Miller — Arnold is coming off of an outstanding two interception performance as he continues to have a very nice season. He needs to continue this trend in the right direction because his nose for the football changes the defense completely. He gives the defense a real playmaking ability. Glad to see Chris Miller back after missing last weekends game against TCU. He has got to play smarter and keep himself on the field, he is far to valuable o miss more games. His ability to fly to the football and shut down the run game is very important to this defense and especially in this game. He will be tracking down ball carriers all night and hopefully making them pay without targeting.

Oklahoma’s Key Players

Quarterback #1 Jalen Hurts — Hurts has been in these top 15 battles many times and typically has come away with a win. He has a QBR above 96 when throwing from the pocket against 3-man rushes but when he is forced outside the pocket it drops to around 65. That will be a key if Baylor can get enough pressure with its three man front to force Hurts to roll out and scan the field.

Wide receiver #2 CeeDee Lamb — One of the best receivers in the country and a top 10 NFL prospect in this class. Lamb has racked up 983 yards and 13 touchdowns on 44 receptions. That is 22.3 yards per catch! Once he catches the football he turns into a running back so limiting his yards after catch will be a priority.

Defensive tackle #90 Neville Gallimore — The 6’2, 302-pound redshirt senior has been a staple of the Oklahoma defensive line for four years now. He only has eight sacks and 16 tackles for loss in his career but he has three of those sacks this season. Clearly he has made some strides at getting after the quarterback. Oklahoma loss fellow defensive tackle Kenneth Mann for the season so a ton of eyes and lots of focus will be on blocking Gallimore.

Linebacker #9 Kenneth Murray – The Big 12’s preseason defensive player of the year has had another good season but he isn’t quite as productive as he was a year ago. He has 62 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks. Very good but not quite reaching his 155 tackle total from a year ago. Murray is extremely active and just a flat out beast in the run game, he fills gaps extremely well and moves quickly for a 243-pound player.

We move on 9-1.

We were about 5 yards away from a reasonable FG attempt for OT...then the INT....we had plenty of execution fails....agree....can't stick this all on the OC

Watched every play. Oh that's right. Every 90+ plays for OU. You can blame the refs all you want. That's weak. The offense choked. We needed first downs to give the defense a rest and they fell flat on their face.

In a big game sometimes one play can change things. Tonight that was Hasty's fumble. We never were the same after that.

this is 100% on both the OC and DC. came out of halftime playing prevent and running conservative offensive plays. play not to lose and you choke. CONTINUE WHAT GOT YOU THE LEAD. bad defensive holding call and my God the number of missed hold calls on OU was infuriating too.

baylor just doesn't know how to win the big one. a school of lowered expectations. cotton bowl with mich state? fiesta bowl with UCF? same thing. school / coaches / players don't know how to win when it matters. (dont say different players - 3 star players are 3 star players i.e. starred at lake travis instead of westlake). one thing to beat who you're supposed to - it's another to hang with Oklahoma or UT for 60 minutes let alone ram it down their throats. Jeff Nixon should resign at the end of the season. There is too much talent on this team to have performances like this. i'm gutted. i feel terrible for these players, the fans, and the school...and they deserve better than this.

Yep, Our D is really good but they have to get off the field on 3rd down and we have had a problem with that all year. Even TCU executed on 3rd down against us. But now we can take our frustration out on UT and then we will get our 2nd shot at OU after all the dancing they did on our field. I would play a video of that over and over on a loop and then go play them.

I felt like we would be OK, but then the ghost of Mich St showed up in my head and that was all it took to send me into that HERE WE GO mode which I normally do not do because this team has won so many close games but NEVER with a defense that was so gassed.

C'MON NOW. WE WILL GET OUR 2ND CHANCE AND THEY DEFINITELY ARE BEATABLE.. WE JUST WENT INTO A TOTAL FUNK. ALL SEASON WE NEVER PLAYED WITH A LEAD LIKE THAT AND I THINK THEY WILL LEARN TO DO SO FROM NOW ON.

No way this is on the D, but you still need to get off the field on 3rd down. But with no offense your goose is cooked. I just cannot understand it except to say that OU KNEW that is they controlled the ball they would wear us down after the hasty TO. They could smell blood. So they decided to just get FD's and gas us and all Hurts had to do was just run enough to make FD's. The only thing that really pissed me off with the refs was the total joke of a spot before their 4th down play at the 21 yet that was only to make it a one score game.

I just cannot understand how we just go completely limp in the 2nd half against a defense that has been gashed a lot lately. IT IS INEXPLICABLE.

I guess there's still a little "We're Beylur" in us. National TV audiences got see BU lay an egg in the second half.

Deep down everyone was Hoping, but knew reality would raise its ugly head. We got to enjoy and "think" we had a chance in the first half. If BU makes it to the Championship game it'll be over in the first half.

Chill. We beat UT and Kansas. We play OU in Dallas. Imagine beating them, as we can. Then imagine a New Years game against someone, and imagine and we win.

This is possible. As I recall during my undergraduate 4 years we won 5 games, 1967-70 seasons.

Relax. Chill. We have a chance to be 13-1. 13 and frigging 1!!

Can you only imagine that. We'd be top six or so.

Next year could be truly special.

Enjoy the ride.

That was a killer for sure. If he just holds onto the ball, we have the ball around midfield and grab the momentum back.

I'm just dreading having to tell my 8-year-old son the news that we lost. He had to go to bed a little after halftime.

Prevent? We were blitzing almost every play. The defensive game plan was great with a 21-point lead. They made OU work for every score and took a ton of time off the clock in the process. Snow's only mistake was making the unfortunate assumption that he'd get some minimal amount of help from his offense.

We have a tougher schedule and will lose most, if not all, of our starting defensive line. But I would expect us to be better in other areas.

if you recorded the game ... go watch the series out of half time. it was a completely different series of play calling than any in the first half. same with the offensive calls from first. i don't disagree the hasty fumble and thornton drop were killers but the offensive calls were conservative compared to the 1st half.

Snow's plan was good. With a 21-point lead, you want make the opposing offense work -- especially one that can score as quickly as OU can if you're not careful. The defense wore out at the end, but that had way more to do with the offense crapping down its leg than anything else.

You know how I know Snow's game plan was good? Despite a disparity in snaps and time of possession that would have broken Alabama or Clemson's defense, we played a second half that required exactly one scoring drive to win. We just never got that drive.

lol come on you are silo'ing the first half from the second. it's not the OC's or DC's fault or it is. it's not the players faults or it is. poor play calling with even poorer execution led to an oklahoma steamroll in the 2nd half. again, go watch the halves and tell me you don't see completely different play-calling. your logic that snow called a good game is surface level. score could've been 70 to 71 and you would still think a good game was called with that within one score mess. a loss is a loss. and losing like that is gut wrenching. i'm not a drink the kool aid everything is hunky dory kind of guy nor am i fire and brimstone. but if you can't admit this was a complete collapse and embarrassment then i don't think you're being honest.

I don't have a problem with different play-calling. That's my point. I think the second-half game plan was good. Make OU work for everything it gets and don't get beat for a quick strike. If our offense does anything -- literally anything -- we win. And even without the offense doing anything, we were one third- or fourth-down stop from winning anyway. Unfortunately, OU made the plays and we didn't. Those are the breaks.

But blaming the defense for this game, when it was the only reason we had a chance to begin with, is very strange to me. That unit was unbelievable until it wore down because the offense held the ball for four plays the entire third quarter. This one is 100 percent on the offense. Period. Blaming Snow and his game plan, when it would have won going away with any offensive execution at all is just reactionary nit-picking after a tough loss.

I do not think it will be over in the 1st half. But it does show you that we MUST have the big plays to be successful. You cannot dink and dunk vs. a quality team. Big plays are how this team is built because of speed and multiple capable WR's. One thing that will help is having Galvin back at LT and if you notices CB had time to throw last night. He was pressured less than Hurts was but for whatever reason could not find his WR's.. That is very concerning because I have always thought that given time he could a D apart. Well after Galvin came in and we corrected the blocking scheme so we should have been able to move the ball in the 2nd. Feel sorry for our D who played as well as they could by making OU work hard as hades for everything. But credit to Hurts for calmly taking our best shot and still finding a way to make virtually every 3rd down try and punching it in time after time. I bet the D was so so frustrated by the O in this game, but they will never say that.

I still think we have a good shot at them because their D is very porous. But you have to execute and exploit them. Believe me when and if we play them again the D will be able to get stops if they have time for a blow. The D is pretty darn good.

Our record is an overstatement. Baylor has been lucky in other wins. You can't count on the defense to win every game for you. The OL is terrible and the offensive game plans are mediocre. We may finish the season at 9-3. Kansas is not a given. The offense needs an overhaul.

Lucky is the wrong word because it minimizes the plays made to win those games. We were lucky to get the call we did in the Tech game, but we still had to make plays to win that game, and we outplayed the Raiders after that break. And there are no such factors involved in any of our other wins. We just made more plays than our opponents did.

And the offense doesn't need an overhaul. It needs better line play. All schemes work better when they're blocked well. But here's the encouraging thing: Our line is better now than it was last year and last year's was miles better than the 2017. We're improving both up front and on offense in general. It's just (brace yourself now) a process, and we're not as far along in that process as our record has fooled some people into believing we were.

We're growing into an elite team. But it takes more than two years to do that when you're starting from absolute zero. Be happy we're this far along already. That's a really damn good thing.

"I think the second-half game plan was good." If you think giving up 6 yards a play and allowing the defense to be worn down into exhausted nothing was "good" - then you just might be a phil bennett disciple i.e. bend but don't break but broken every time. I would rather keep the course of the first two quarters...the quarters that built us up to a giant lead... than let the under-sized D get pummeled on 9+ play, 5 minute long drives. I would MUCH rather let someone beat us over-top - which i dont think was likely given lamb out and no one stepped up and the talent of our DB's - than let them dink and dunk and let the LB's and CB's / Safeties get pummeled play after play by Hurts and the downfield blockers. I agree defensive players not to blame because they clearly gave their bodies / minds / lives for this game. They were put in a bad position by whoever was calling plays, series after series that could only lead to the result it did.

But can we all agree how much the OL stepped up this game?! Oh man, the absence of false start penalties alone made them an A+ for me.

The defense wouldn't have worn down if the offense had done its part. You're blaming that unit for problems it didn't create or even contribute to.

And OU averaged 5.3 yards per play last night, which is 3.5 yards below its season average (with last night's game included). Our defense wasn't a/the problem. You're just frustrated.

OU has an elite offense. We weren't going to keep them under wraps all night, and you're naive if you thought we were. You have to pick your poison against an offense like that, and with a 21-point lead, I'll take bend-but-don't-break all day over hyper-aggressive calls that raise the risk of quick-strike scoring drives, especially with an offense that was unlikely to be much help in the event a shootout broke out.

Lol I went to Baylor during the dark times. My first game was watching the bears lose to tcu. Just this is what Baylor does, lose

LOL is right.
Have the mods banned that ******** yet?

So you're saying people that have a different opinion than you should be banned? Sad. A lot of can relate to that person's viewpoint. Baylor was seriously out coached in the second half. Painful, but true.

Well it is par for this board. Ban anyone who says anything negative about the team, coaching, or points out facts that the sunshine pumpers don't want to hear.

Like 9-1? and the inside track to play in the conference Championship? and all sports pointing up? and new construction campus wide but also in Athletics? I don't know but I think the Sunshine Pumper's are still winning against the Negative Nellie's!
