#4 Baylor (12-1, 2-0) escapes with a 57-52 road victory over #22 Texas Tech (10-4, 1-1) led by 14 points from Davion Mitchell.
Ten Observations
- Our guards are good but Freddie Gillespie and Mark Vital are invaluable. They are like having a great OL and DL in football and our guards are the skill position guys.
- Getting 15k in Texas Tech’s arena for a midweek game was impressive. From those that I spoke with:
- They make it fun
- They serve alcohol (cut off at half I believe)
- They attract the local community- probably due to #1 and #2
- They make it fun, plenty of security and police presence but they allow fans a lot of leeway as long as no threats are made.
- They expect to win- something we should also expect at every Baylor home game
- Bandoo had two dagger plays (3 and put back layup), followed by a forgettable last 2 minutes- offensive foul, misses front end and then Freddie gets possession and Bandoo forces one at rim early in shot clock when he should have run clock.
- Texas Tech is stingy doling out visitor assists. I’ll have to watch the tape, but they have always erred on the side of it is not an assist. Kind of a funny quirk in Lubbock.
- Mitchell and Mayer did not charge at first glance, need to go back and watch.
- Winning on the road is hard- especially against teams that are talented and well coached.
- Jared Butler, cold as ice all game and prone to turn it over but delivers in clutch.
- Davion Mitchell is starting to discover that he is the best athlete on the floor every night. He is going to be special.
- If you can’t trust Scott Drew on offense, who can you trust? We will be a top 25 offense by the end of the season to go along with a top 10 defense... Look out.
- The scouting of opponents for Scott Drew teams is elite. Film, prepare, film, prepare, execute. We take away other teams’ strengths.
