BREAKING: Baylor lands 2021 cornerback Tevin Williams out of Oklahoma
Baylor added to its 2021 recruiting class Wednesday when Stillwater (OK) high school cornerback Tevin Williams pledged to the Bears. Williams is the sixth commit for Baylor overall and the first from out of state.
The 6-0, 172-pound prospect chose Baylor over offers from SMU, Texas Tech, Air Force, New Mexico, and Toledo.
Williams’ father, Tevin Williams Sr., said his son is excited about his future at Baylor.
“He has a great relationship with the Baylor coaches,” Williams Sr. said. “As a parent, that’s all you ask—to make sure he has someone to go to if need be. We are very blessed. The school itself sold our son. He wants to do pre-med and go to medical school. So he has the both of two worlds. Outstanding educational opportunities and outstanding football. It’s a win win!”
The three-star cornerback attended Baylor camp at the end of July where he knocked the testing portion out of the park in front of Matt Rhule’s staff. He ran a 4.45 in the 40, a 4.30 shuttle, and had a 36-inch vertical. But he did not leave with an offer. Dave Aranda’s staff ended up offering on April 2.
Williams finished his junior season with 38 tackles and two interceptions as he helped lead his team to a second-straight appearance in the state title game.
The two-sport athlete also excels on the track where he has personal records of 10.75 in the 100m, 24.07 in the 200m, and 52.16 in the 400m.
Here is SicEm365’s Grayson Grundhoefer’s film analysis of the new Baylor commit:
“After watching his film it is clear Williams has a knack for being around the football, whether it is making plays in coverage, snuffing out screens, or making plays on special teams. He does a very nice job playing physical in press coverage, which is evident when he runs receivers out of bounds and also in how quickly he gets off blocks. His 10.75 speed in the 100 meters shows on film, as well, with his ability to recover if he gets beat, along with his acceleration to get to ball carriers. Williams also isn’t a clumsy defensive back who can’t catch. He is a ball hawk who had three interceptions on film. I also like the way he uses his hands to disrupt pass attempts and break up possible completions.
I want to see more of his clips from the season since this is such a small sample size, but I think he needs to work on change of direction and hip flexibility. You don’t see him cutting a ton in film, so seeing him get challenged by an excellent route runner may be an issue at times. I also think that, technique-wise, he still has some improving to do. He is still raw, which is a good thing for his future, but it also means everything may not always be sharp on his current film. He could’ve already made huge strides this offseason that we’re just not seeing yet. I expect a big senior year from him if he continues to progress. The tools and frame are there for him to take another huge jump before college.”
