Former Chicago Bulls executive vice president Steve Schanwald had some nice things to say about Baylor coach Scott Drew during an interview with SicEm365 radio Friday afternoon.
“Baylor is so blessed to have someone like Scott Drew overseeing their men’s basketball program,” Schanwald said. “They just don’t make people any better than Scott. They don’t make people any more concerned about their welfare of their players than Scott. I think he’s the most underrated college basketball coach in America.”
Schwanwald got to know Drew in the late 1990s, when Drew was an assistant under his father, Homer, at Valparaiso. Scott’s brother, Bryce, was a star player for the Crusaders and earned national fame in 1998 when he hit a buzzer-beater to catapult No. 13-seed Valpo to a 70-69 victory over No. 4 Ole Miss in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.
"The year Bryce hit that shot—“Pacer” was their nickname for that play—I invited Homer and Scott, who was an assistant at that time for Valpo, and Bryce and the entire Valpo team to come out, and we honored them at a Bulls game,” Schanwald said.
Later that summer, with Michael Jordan leading the way, the Bulls won their third consecutive NBA title. Schanwald, who has been featured prominently on the ESPN documentary that chronicles the Bulls’ dynasty, retried in June of 2015 after 28 years with the organization.
