Scott Drew on Butler, Teague: "Still no decision"
Baylor basketball coach Scott Drew walked out of a mid-afternoon lunch with Jared Butler Monday toting a full belly—but not much news regarding his star player’s thoughts on the NBA draft.
“Still no decision,” Drew told SicEm365 early Monday evening. “Once he makes his choice I’m sure I’ll find out on Twitter just like everyone else.”
Drew also said the same thing about guard MaCio Teague, whom he speaks with “every two or three days.”
Butler and Teague entered their name in the NBA draft in April but still have the option of withdrawing if they aren’t satisfied with the feedback they’ve received from NBA executives.
Underclassmen have until Aug. 3 to withdraw. The NBA draft was originally scheduled for June 25 but was pushed back to Oct. 16 because of COVID.
“The later deadline has definitely elongated the process,” Drew said. “But hopefully we will know one way or the other soon.”
Butler (16 points) and Teague (13.9) were the top to scorers for a squad that went 26-4 last season. Butler has been projected as a second-round pick while Teague’s name has not appeared in any mock drafts. Butler has two years of eligibility remaining. Teague has one.
Drew said Baylor’s players began trickling back to Waco last week in anticipation of starting voluntary workouts on Monday. But an increase in COVID cases throughout the state prompted Baylor to alter its schedule, and the new reporting date has yet to be specified.
The Bears who are in Waco aren’t allowed to use the school’s facilities, so many have been working out on their own in public gyms throughout the city.
Drew said Butler, Mark Vital, Davion Mitchell, Adam Flagler, Matthew Mayer, Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua, Adam Flagler, Zach Loveday and Jackson Moffatt are all in town. Teague—who is in hometown of Cincinnati—Tristan Clark, L.J. Cryer and Dain Dianja are among those who have yet to report.
“Most of the guys who are here will probably head back home in a day or so,” Drew said. “Hopefully things get back to normal and everyone is back soon.”
