Interesting, saw a youtube on this that stated the tech change (mainly improvement of amps) led to the bass being able to fill more space - thus could go without the rhythm guitar - 3 piece ! This of course occurred a long time ago.

A band is a drummer, a bass player, and some invited guest artists.
If you can play and sing, it only takes one.

Best "Electric" 3 piece to my geezer ears were Cream, Hendrix, and ZZ Top...Awesome sounds from awesome talents...On the Acoustic side, I heard Crosby, Stills and Nash play a first set all acoustic at Moody in Dallas fall of '69...Just great work...Second set they were joined by their band and a guy named Neil Young..Brought the house down, and their encore was "Down By the River."..Maybe just my age at the time, my mindset, and my chemical composition at that particular moment...but I'd say that's the finest concert I ever attended. I also have to mention a little 3 piece ( stand up bass and 2 acoustic guitars) that played at the Wrangler Club on the Dallas highway in Waco late 70's early 80's...James Hand and the Wandering Rebels..There might be a person here that heard "Slim" back in the day..if so, you know how lucky you were..He put his soul into every song he sang...and made you feel it too...Very few singers can/could do that...

I'll throw this group out there for Americana.

Although they use a 4th in this set... they might be disqualified...

I'd throw Triumph into the mix as well. Rik Emmett is one of the great underrated guitarists.

After Peter Gabriel left, Genesis became a really good 3 pc group when drummer Phil Collins took over lead vocals

Cream, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Rush, ZZ Top, Primus, the Police, Nirvana, Motörhead.

Grand Funk Railroad (in their early 70's form)

Most bands are very liberal and don't need to worry about being PC.
