If you could go out now and buy one of these pickups (limit about $45k) which one and why?

Ford F150
Chevy Silverado
Dodge Ram
GMC Sierra
Toyota Tundra
Nissan Titan

I am a Ford F-150 fan. Mine belonged to my Dad (a 1995). Still looks good and runs great, but I don't drive it much.

My next truck will be a Ford. Have always had good luck with them and I have never forgotten that during the financial crisis, Chevy/GMC and Dodge took bailout money from the government and then filed bankruptcy. Ford did neither and weathered the storm.

Chevy Silverado & GMC Sierra is the same truck, just different badges.

My vote would be Ford F-150 (Fred Sanford's truck was a 1951 Ford F-100)

I just passed 100k miles on my 2014 Silverado, and I still love it. It's very quiet inside, smooth ride.

The comment about GMC and Chevy being the same is very true. I looked at both, and no lie, the only difference I saw was the logo on the steering wheel.

I bought a Chevy because that was the make that we already were using for our company. I know people that drive all the makes you listed, and all like them. Honestly, I don't think you can go wrong. They're all well made.

There isnt really a wrong answer on buying a truck, all are good. Find one that is the best price and features- Ram has been good one price and features lately plus you can find a dealer that offers lifetime drivetrain warranty. There is a Chevrolet and a Ram dealership near me doing it.

yes and no- unless they changed, chevy doesnt offer the 6 liter engine in the 1500 but GMC does

Driving an f150 now. It's a good truck. No complaints. I liked my Dodge 1500 before my f150 better. Seemed to ride better and more comfortable on long trips. My 2 cents.

Jealous. My grandfather had a 1963 dark green. He sold it for $500 in 1979 without telling me. He had just put in a new oak bed.

I have a 1970 Ranger XLT

Buddy of mine bought a new Dodge Ram last August, and this week his brake pedal assembly just fell apart for no reason. He had to use his emergency brake to stop and avoid a collision.

GM and Chrysler have had huge problems with defects and recalls since the bailout era.

Buy Ford. Or Toyota.

According to Wiki, the Ram is manufactured at the Saltillo Truck Assembly Plant in Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico and Warren Truck Assembly in Warren, Michigan, United States.

Looks like your friend had a 50-50 chance of quality manufacture. Wait, I have been to Warren, MI. Your friend was screwed.

In the nineties, I was up in Toledo, Ohio for a decade on a project. Actually it was three months but it seemed like a decade. A tradesman talked my boss into trying his dive bar across the street from the Powertrain plant. The bar was called Lil Shebas. Around midnight the bartender starts lining up drinks on the bar. Shot/shot/beer/beer. Shot/shot/shot/shot. You get the point. I asked why he was doing that. He said lunchtime at the Powertrain plant. GM factory workers start piling in locating their stack of drinks. Slam/slam/slam/slam. Back to work. All on a tab.

I like Ford trucks, too. My Dad likes Dodge

Not sure your bailout info is accurate though

I've driven late-model F-150s and Silverados recently. I drove the F-150 to 200k miles. The Chevy I sold at 75k since I was lucky enough to get a company vehicle.

Both trucks were great. I feel like the interiors of the new Chevy's are better than the Ford's until you get into the upper end packages on the Fords but, man, my F-150 was bulletproof. I changed the oil myself every 3-4k miles and it ran like a freaking champ. I wish I had that truck back.

Driving a Tahoe right now. About to hit 200k miles. A couple of issues but nothing that you wouldn't expect from a 8 year old vehicle with 200k miles.

In short, I don't think you can go wrong with Ford or Chevy but if you put a gun to my head, I'd say F-150.

I was never a Ford guy from my youth up until just a few years ago. Always drove GM stuff. But Times change, and it was time to reassess. I did some homework and saw how they had really improve their build quality and technology. They got better while the others got cheaper.

My folks have a history with Chrysler and I don't know why they keep going back. They always have ticky tacky problems early on, accessory problems, trim falling apart, blowers going bad and making noise, stereo problems, all kinds of things. And they were always difficult to repair and cost a bundle to get fixed. Old people are funny that way.

Our 2007 Commander started having a long list of mechanical problems at about 110k miles. It was frustrating.

Last year we bought a new Wrangler for my wife, and for not much money we scored a lifetime unlimited mileage bumper-to-bumper warranty. It's backed by Chrysler and kicks in after the factory warranty expires. $100 deductible for each occurrence, just take it to a dealership.

So my 10 year old will inherit it in 5-1/2 years, then my 5 year old after that. It will be under full warranty as long as I never transfer title. Even if it's 15 years old with 300k miles.

That made me comfortable to buy a Chrysler product.

A lot depends on what you plan to haul with it, and under what conditions. You could be talking anywhere between an F-350 to a Toyota Tacoma.

Definitely want a full size for the interior space. Don't need anything heavy duty. Doubt it'll ever pull a trailer. The most it'll haul is the occasional Lowes small project. Lumber, mulch, sod, etc.

I guess that all depends on your own definition of what a "pickup truck" is. I love it because I don't need to to haul a ****-ton, but it's adequate for my needs. And it drives/rides like a car, which I also love.

This is Car & Driver's headline for the 2017 model...

2017 Honda Ridgeline AWD

Beats other pickups but plays its own game.

Dodge fell apart.

Ford was meh.

And Toyota is amazing!

Did this 1 year ago. I bet there's a thread if you search for it.

Came down to f150 vs tundra. Ended up going with the tundra. Liked the engine better and for comparable models it was 8-10k less. Some of the tech and comfort things were better with Ford but it wasn't worth 10k to me at the time.

Did you just imply that an El Camino is a truck???

The reason I called the Ridgeline's a minivan with a bed is because they- quite literally- have a passenger car suspension and frame style. They took a car, put a taller body on it, and then gave it a bed. So, yea, it's an El Camino - which is not a truck.

I mean, hell, the thing has FWD. What truck has FWD?

All that said...I get that a lot of people drive half ton trucks and never use them for that purpose so I see where Honda is going here. I bet that Ridgeline rides really smoothly and the bed is perfect for light loads which is all most people need.

If you ignore styling and just look at the way it's built, then yes. The Suburban, Avalanche, and 1500 series all share a very, very similar drivetrain/frame/suspension setup.

I think the Avalanche is a SUV with a bed. The Z71 off road package is a different story.

BaylorGuy314
How long do you want to ignore this user?
If memory serves, the Avalanche was built on the suburban frame. It's basically a suburban with the back cutoff.

But my point still stands - the suburban is very similar to the 1500 in design. They have similar bones and drivetrains.

The Honda Ridgeline shares it's bones with a car. It's more minivan/car than truck. That's all I was trying to say. And for most people, who may haul some really light things (jetski, for example) or small trailers, that's probably a great option, especially since it likely rides better and gets better MPG.

But I dislike that Honda went that route because there is no way to retrofit the Ridgeline and make it a perform like the trucks it competes against in the market (Ranger, Tacoma, Colorado, etc). Those are designed like their larger siblings but on a smaller scale, as opposed to taking a passenger car set up and slapping a truck body on it.

But, again, for most peoplethe Honda Ridgeline is a lot more practical as a daily driver than a F-150/Silverado/Tundra/etc.
