500 Miles is a little too good for that to be a one hit wonder
Don't know that one, but funny they mention John Barleycorn - I know that nameStranger said:
How could we forget this one? Some of the greatest lyrics ever written.
Interesting (at least to me) bit of trivia: Traffic adapted the song from a poem by Robert Burns from the mid-1700s. Burns himself was drawing on Scottish songs that went back at least 200 years before his own time. John Barleycorn was a personification of grains used in making alcoholic beverages. In the earliest versions, it is ordinary folk who seek to kill John Barleycorn out of revenge for the hangovers he inflicted on them.Keyser Soze said:Don't know that one, but funny they mention John Barleycorn - I know that nameStranger said:

Traffic had several hit so they are not on one hit wonders
The Church wasn't a one hit wonder. Your mentioning it means that you don't listen to them much.MrGolfguy said:

We have a nurse in our ORs that every time the song comes on, we will page someone to 867-5309 and every time she will ask if we want her to call it back. She has never once in a decade hinted at the fact that she knew it was a joke.Buck Whiskey said:

Wow, what an awesome find with the video. (I'd have loved to have attended the party with the dancers after they shot that.)Stranger said:
Everybody thought this was Buddy Holly, maybe because it was written by SonnyCurtis of the Crickets and produced by Norman Petty in the same Clovis, New Mexico studio where Buddy did his early hits. Bobby of Baytown, Texas was starting to catch on in California when he was found in a car at 23. Most stories point to being mixed up with the wrong kind of people. Despite being a one hit wonder this song is #175 on Rolling Stones all-time Top 500.
Speaking of which, this was the first song that aired on MTV. Went to No. 1 and by that time the group had disbanded when its co-founders left to join Yes. When Yes broke up, the Buggles got back together to release a second album, but it didn't do well.Keyser Soze said:
With the exception of Strangers great finds, very heavy MTV early years influence
Lots of songs on here aren't one hit wonders, my choice isn't the only one. The thread basically evolved into to peoples favorite obscure songs.Gold Tron said:The Church wasn't a one hit wonder. Your mentioning it means that you don't listen to them much.MrGolfguy said:

I'd consider a "hit" to be be a song that appeared for at least a couple of weeks on a recognized US chart, at least Top 20 or so.MrGolfguy said:Lots of songs on here aren't one hit wonders, my choice isn't the only one.
