I'm a firm believer in classical literature and the common frames of reference it provides across generations. Whether it's the Bible or Shakespeare, shared stories and turns of phrase are valuable shorthand for communication.

It occurred not long ago that 80s cartoons can have the same effect with kids. Since then, my kids (6&4) have seen most of the following and love them all.

-SheRa
-Thundercats
-Voltron
-Gummibears
-TheReal Ghostbusters
-Duck Tails
-Transformers
-**every major old Disney cartoon

We also hit some old films

-Never Ending Story
-Princess Bride
-Annie
-Parent Trap
-Blackbeard's Ghost
-CondorMan
-Transformers Movie


Any other recommendations?

All of the classic Looney Tunes cartoons. They were the best. Bugs, Daffy, Elmer, Sylvester, Foghorn Leghorn (personal fav), Porky, Roadrunner and Coyote, Marvin the Martian, Yosemite Sam, Pepe le Pew, Speedy Gonzales. The old non PC versions, not any of the newer stuff.

You can start with Michigan J. Frog in "One Froggy Evening", a cartoon with no dialog. Total classic with so many life lessons to discuss its hard to list them all (start with greed and hubris and work your way from there).

The Flintstones and Jetsons (the same show in different time periods) are also highly recommended.

My kids are older. While driving them to school today, I was able to work in Holy Grail, Underwear Gnomes, and ManBearPig references into an educational example.

It's sad that kids can't enjoy "Song of the South" these days either. Zipidee-doo-da!
