Bohanon benefitted from a total NFL defensive backfield and LB and the #1 rusher in Baylor history who also got signed. Any above average QB this year would have won the Championship with that team around him. Gerry did not win the Sugar Bowl, The Sugar Bowl was won in spite of his 40 yards passing and the embarrassing O by the above mentioned D and RB. Not trying to pile on, or attack personally, just being real.

I watched replay of KSU game again last night. Shapen came in and looked like a seasoned QB. Even announcers said the same. Moved the ball well, pin point passes and several into coverage. Watched first half of big12 champ game and same thing. I think he will make our young receivers look really good next season and all we need are a few backs than can get 400-500 reads each and Bears will be way more balanced than last year. The deep threat is back under Shapen which GB just never could do consistently. As has been said many times, Shapen won the job, Bohanon wasn't demoted.
Shapen averaged like 6.5 yards per pass attempt and led the offense to one field goal against Kansas State.

He's a talented passer, and I understand the excitement for what he can potentially bring to the passing game/offense. But I'm afraid the expectations for him a little unrealistic based on what he's actually done so far. This is his first year at a starter and he's going to experience some growing pains. I hope people can accept what he is and what he's not and have some patience as he grows into the role.

Shapen did go a great job. And I never said that Bohanon didn't have problems. That's why I qualified my statement with "partly". Also, I was speculating.

Judging Shapen by the KSU game may be unwise: he only played the second half & as a backup. No one expected him to play that much until it was thrust upon him. Also, the coaches may have game planned to take fewer risks considering how green he was. I think the Big 12 championship game is a better example of his capabilities. However, one point is clear: he only played 2.5 games & that's not much basis for an evaluation. The coaches know more based upon Spring practices but going with him was still somewhat of a gamble.

Why discuss Sugar Bowl or KState? We have one apples to apples comparison- OK St. Both on road, complete game and both had feet under them. What offense played better?

Only real state that mattered was one got a win and the other did not.

Neither performed particularly well.

With Gerry, we finished with 280 yards and averaged 5.0 yards per play.

With Blake, we finished with 242 yards and averaged 4.0 yards per play (5.9 ypp before Shapen's injury).

Shapen had the long completion streak in the first half and was ineffective late because of the injury, but without turnovers setting us up with 11-, 37- and 47-yard touchdown drives, the scores of those two games likely look a lot alike.

Neither quarterback showed any ability to drive the length of the field against that OSU defense.

17 straight completions, three TDs and a win is equal???

Ok... Let's face it. Shapen is not gonna get a fair shake here. If his OK State performance in the B12 Championship is the same as GB's loss to the same team, I give up.

Did you read the entire post? I'm not saying I agree completely but he does make a point, especially the last sentence. I think most observers agree we won the second game mostly on defense (actually, the entire season). There were plenty of contributions on offense, including both QBs, but I'd give the OL more credit than either QB. I'm not knocking either one but the numbers don't lie.

Amazing Sugar Bowl stat to illustrate: our D sacked the 2 Ole Miss QBs TEN times while our OL gave up ZERO sacks! I think that is quite impressive.

Unfortunately, there are no do-overs.

However, it's always fun revisiting old threads and seeing who was 100% on point (bear2be2) and who was way off!

Enjoy.

The new USF coach sounds like he's still supportive of Gerry as QB1 next year.

Looks like Gerry will miss Spring ball as he is still rehabbing his shoulder.
