Not gonna argue this:

Quote:

Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report ranked his top seven worst moves and the Dallas Cowboys' trade of Amari Cooper made the list. Knox thinks that the Cowboys traded him away for "peanuts."

"By letting the football world know Cooper wasn't wanted, Dallas robbed itself of any trade leverage," Knox writes. "It only got a fifth-round pick and a swap of sixth-rounders from the Cleveland Browns for the four-time Pro Bowler."

Knox then continued to crush the move by writing, "To say Dallas underestimated the receiver market would be an understatement. The Green Bay Packers netted first- and second-round picks for Davante Adams. The Kansas City Chiefs got a first- and second-round 2022 pick, two fourth-round selections, and a 2023 sixth-round pick for Tyreek Hill."

Knox isn't wrong on this front, considering how great Cooper was this past season. He finished with 865 yards and eight touchdowns off 68 receptions.

The Cowboys decided to pay Michael Gallup and commit to him long-term over Cooper.
It's a decision that's very risky and one that could backfire in a hurry if Cooper balls out in Cleveland.
AMARI COOPER

The Dallas Cowboys felt they were "out-physical'ed'' in their playoff loss to the Niners and wanted to use this NFL Draft to avoid getting "big-boy'ed'' again.

One of the results? The "Vanilla Gorilla.''

"I'm going to try,'' the 6-5, 320-pound fifth-round pick John Ridgeway told The Draft Show, "to break someone's neck when I get out there.''

Oh.

Ridgeway

Ridgeway, 23, played at the University of Arkansas, meaning school booster Jerry Jones knows him well.

"That really is not only a great pick, but he is also a hell of a competitor,'' the Cowboys owner said. "But it is also a philosophical thing that feels good now that we've got two of those big guys."

The other "big guy'' on the inside of the Dallas D-line is a late-round rookie from a year ago, Quinton Bohanna. He's a 360-pounder, and if the plan works, they rotate in for the Cowboys as run-pluggers.

Or neck-breakers. Figuratively, of course.

"If I can't (break necks), I'm just going to tackle someone really hard and try to make a big play, make the crowd go crazy,'' said Ridgeway, who, no dummy, has been marketing merchandise featuring his "Vanilla Gorilla'' nickname.

Bohanna did nothing last year that made me think he was plugger and fireplug or anything else. I had hope but suspect he will get cut soon enough

Inside the Star from Jess Haynie, cant really argue with this

After finishing his rookie contract last season, Leighton Vander Esch signed a one-year deal to return to Dallas and hopefully convince someone that he deserves a long-term deal. But after the Cowboys' 2022 draft, it's starting to look like the linebacker's "prove it" season will be to attract the NFL's 31 other teams.

Vander Esch became an unrestricted free agent this offseason after Dallas declined the 5th-year option on his original contract. While Leighton had an outstanding rookie season in 2018, injuries and scheme changes marred his 2019-2020 seasons and left the Cowboys dubious about his long-term potential.

Leighton started to get back to form last year, finishing 2021 on a high note with a strong second half to the regular season and being one of the team's best performers in the playoff loss to the 49ers. It was enough for Dallas to give him an almost fully guaranteed $2 million for the upcoming season.

The Cowboys already have two linebackers they seem committed to for the long term in Micah Parsons and Jabril Cox. One is obvious; Parsons is already one of the best defensive players in the league and probably the centerpiece of Dallas' defense for years to come.

Cox is already feeling like a valued asset based on the evidence. The front office has commented that they expect a full recovery and significant role for Jabril in 2022, and then validated that by not selecting a linebacker until the 5th round of last week's draft.

That rookie, LSU's Damone Clark, had a limited chance of playing this year due to recent spinal fusion surgery. But the Cowboys have stated that they expect him to get on the field at some point as a rookie, and if so Clark may get a chance to flash talent that was generally expected to make him a Day 2 pick before
the surgery.

None of this bodes well for Leighton Vander Esch's future in Dallas. Even if he has a fantastic 2022 season, will the cap-conscious Cowboys give him a lucrative deal next offseason when they already have Cox and Clark to work with?

It's not like Vander Esch's departure would leave Dallas with nothing, either. If another team scoops him up in 2023 free agency then that could factor into the compensatory pick formula and help the Cowboys score a mid-round pick in 2024.

It really feels like a classic "damned if you do, damned if you don't scenario for Leighton. If he struggles on the field or with injuries this season then Dallas just moves on to younger prospects. If Vander Esch has a good year he just might price himself out of the Cowboys' range.

However it shakes out, bad or good, 2022 is looking like Leighton Vander Esch's last season in Dallas.

Besides Damone Clark who is dealing with multiple back surgeries, we also too this guy in the 6th. Anyone remember him frorm Okie State

Round 6, No. 193 overall: Devin Harper, LB, Oklahoma State

My take: Knowing Damone Clark, a fifth-round pick, is going to miss his rookie season, the Cowboys added linebacker depth in the sixth round. At 6-foot and 234 pounds, Harper is smaller than most of the linebackers the Cowboys have, but he can run. In his one season as a full-time starter, he had 96 tackles, six sacks, 10 tackles for loss and 15 quarterback pressures. Harper was at his best in the biggest games. He had 10 tackles against Oklahoma and Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE)- Knoxville native and Oklahoma State linebacker Devin Harper was drafted in the sixth round, No. 193 overall by the Dallas Cowboys.

Harper played football for Tobi Kilgore at Karns high school, earning all-region and all-state selections. The former Beaver went on to play six years at Oklahoma State. Harper spent his first five seasons with the Cowboys playing mainly on special teams and in a reserve defensive role. The linebacker exercised his COVID sixth year of eligibility, enjoying a breakout season in his first year as a full-time starter.

Harper finished this past season as the Cowboy's second-leading tackler with 96 total tackles. The linebacker also led the team in quarterback hurries with 15, ranking as the second-highest single-season total since the stat began being tracked in 1982.

Harper's most notable games came against rival Oklahoma in Bedlam and in the Fiesta Bowl against Notre Dame, recording a career-high 10 tackles in each of the Cowboy's wins. Harper also tallied at least seven tackles in nine games.

Harper impressed at Oklahoma State's Pro Day. He recorded a 40.5-inch vertical that would have ranked second among linebackers at the NFL Combine, and clocked a sub-4.5 40-yard dash time.

Harper becomes the third Knoxville native to be selected in the 2022 NFL Draft among Cole Strange and Cade Mays.

SI's Best UDFA

Quote:

Dallas Cowboys: Alec Lindstrom, C (Boston College)

The Cowboys built a deep UDFA class. Seven signees received draftable grades from Dane Brugler. And while you could make a case for Texas A&M linebacker Aaron Hansford or Ole Miss wide receiver Dontario Drummond, Lindstrom winds up as my pick here. He's probably only a center in the NFL due to size limitations, but Lindstrom was an outstanding and consistent player as a three-year starter at BC.

S is our most suspect position,

Jaquiski Tartt. He started every game for the San Francisco 49ers last season and played decently. He would come in on a one and done deal. Last year he signed for $1,127,500 contract with the San Francisco 49ers, including a $137,500 signing bonus, $987,500 guaranteed,

He can play both spots Tartt's a decent tackler and is solid in coverage.. He had 66 tackles and 5 for loss.

Sounds like a great rotation guy. Been in the league for 7 years so would be very helpful with the youngsters.

Javedon Clowney . - no way he is going to get $15m per In his eighth year in the league in 2021, the edge rusher turned things around. At 28 years old, he accumulated 9.0 sacks and 19 QB hits. Those are stats that any team would want to have from a member of their defensive line.

According to the grades given out by Pro Football Focus, Clowney's 90.9 run-defense grade since 2015 is the sixth-best among edge rushers. On a Cowboys line that struggled with defending the run, the current Brown would be a great asset. Clowney is physical and gives quarterbacks a lot to deal with. PFF predicts that the defensive end will likely sign another one-year contract worth about $15 million

But as his price drops into the $8-10m range, Cowboys could be very interested

Daryl Williams - the Bills OT, dropped due to Salary cap.

Hughes will be entering his 13th year in the NFL in 2022 at an impressive 34 years old. His age is likely a reason that teams aren't chomping at the bit to sign him immediately. However, the long-time Buffalo Bill would be an excellent depth addition to the defensive end group for the Cowboys. If Dallas is looking for more bodies at the position so that Micah Parsons can play around the defense, adding Hughes could be an affordable backup option.

Expectations have to be realistic though. Hughes isn't producing the way that he used to and his snap counts are certainly lower than in his younger years. However, he is still great at terrorizing quarterbacks and making his presence known. And, despite his age, Hughes has remained on the field when needed. Not only is he the longest-tenured player on the Bills, but he also has never missed a game due to injury in his nine years with Buffalo.

Another plus for the Cowboys is that the Bill is a Texas native who played collegiate football at TCU. Again, this would be the bargain option. Spotrac predicts that the edge rusher could make a two-year contract worth just over $6 million. So, you may be losing some snaps, but you're paying significantly less.

Former Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III has a team in mind for the 2022 NFL regular season.

Griffin III, a Texas native, would like to play for the Dallas Cowboys next season, backing up star quarterback Dak Prescott in the NFC East.

"I've been reached out to from a plethora of teams," Griffin said. "Going back home to Texas with the Dallas Cowboys, I know a lot of Washington fans don't want to hear that, but that would be a great situation for me."
Griffin explained his situation to NFL Network host Rich Eisen.

The Cowboys could use more of a veteran presence at the backup quarterback spot. And Griffin, of course, is already pretty familiar with the landscape of the division, having begun his career in Washington.

"I like the idea bc they have similar play style. You wouldn't have to change the offense if RG3 had to go in the game," one fan tweeted.

"I believe he is more dangerous than Rush..and knowing Jerry is so cheap with his back up QB contracts and Grier cant get loose from PS team...I thinkRG3 or Kap is good for me," another Cowboys fan wrote.

"I don't wanna spend too much time on this but let me just ask this question. Would you be more comfortable with RGIII or Cooper as your back up? Me personally.. I think if he's healthy .. RGIII," another fan added on Twitter.

Where do you see RG3 landing in 2022?

I think Drafted will be reasonably easy, Tyler Smith although Williams and TOlbert could easily be in the run for the bucks

I think UDFA will be a slam dunk for Garibay. He could be our leading scorer if our O is as strong as last year. Keep an eye out for Maquese Bell. If he move into a starting or rotating S slot, could make it real interesting. Unless Lindstrom somehow grabs the starting C job.

Jonathan Garibay, who Dallas signed as an undrafted rookie free agent. He was 15 of 16 on field-goal attempts during his senior season and 49 of 50 on extra-point attempts. He was 14 of 14 on attempts within 50 yards. His biggest kick was a 62-yard game-winner against Iowa State that became the longest by an FBS kicker to win a game with less than a minute remaining.

daRon Bland the 6'0, 197-pound Fresno State cornerback whose traits make him plenty intriguing.

"Big, long, athletic corner. It fits the prototype of what we are looking for when we build our defense," said Cowboys executive vice president of player personnel Will McClay. "You want big outside corners that have vertical control can stop the vertical routes and run with those guys and then make plays on the football. Then you add the athleticism that he has."

Bland doesn't possess the mind-bending height or length of Nahshon Wright and Israel Mukuamu, the 2021 draft picks who tower over most of the members of this roster. Still, with 32-inch arms, a wingspan that measures roughly six-and-a-half feet and a 35.5-inch vertical leap, Bland clearly possesses many of the attributes that defensive coordinator Dan Quinn covets in a defensive back.

Perhaps most importantly for a guy drafted No. 167 overall is Bland track record on special teams, where he says he played plenty at both Fresno State, and at FCS Sacramento State, where he started his career.

"Throughout my college career, I played punt, punt return, kickoff and kickoff return," he said. "I pretty much played it all."

That should be music to special teams coordinator John Fassel's ears. Wright, drafted into a similar situation last season, played roughly 68% of the Cowboys' special teams snaps in a reserve role.

With all three starters from last year back in the cornerback room not to mention Wright and Kelvin Joseph that figures to be the future facing Bland, as well.

"There's a lot of great guys in the cornerback room to learn from like Trevon Diggs, Jourdan Lewis and Anthony Brown," Bland said. "Those are some good guys to learn from."

There are worse ways to begin a pro career. And, as the Cowboys have said, the hope is that will allow them to develop Bland's traits, which speak for themselves.

Wonder if they thought putting De at OLB on passing downs?

Quote:

Do you guys feel Sam Williams has the closing speed similar to Micah Parsons rushing the passer? Man, he seems to close the gap quick. MICHAEL WILLIAMS / PHOENIX, NY

David: I see what you're getting at. Williams is only a 10th of a second slower despite being an inch taller and 20 pounds heavier than Micah. His athleticism is impressive. I'm still reluctant to compare him to the Defensive Rookie of the Year especially since Micah often had a free run at the QB by virtue of playing linebacker a lot of the time. But his athleticism is what will give him a chance to be successful right away, to your point.

Rob: There's a highlight of Williams against Louisville disengaging from the tackle and catching up to QB Malik Cunningham for a trip-up tackle all the way at the sideline, preventing him from turning up field. I thought, "Yeah, that's kind of Micah-like." I'm not making a direct comparison, but I do think you're on to something in that regard. The biggest thing I noticed is he's a smooth natural pass rusher with bend, and that's what Randy Gregory had when he was here.

The Dallas Cowboys have no update on cornerback Kelvin Joseph's status for the 2022 season but he is still on the team and is having a productive off season, according to coach Mike McCarthy. Joseph was a passenger in a vehicle from which fatal gunshots were fired on March 18.. Police announced the arrests of Aries Jones, 28, and Tivione English, 21, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in the death of Cameron Ray after speaking with Joseph.

Joseph was not arrested. The investigation remains open, per Dallas police. Under Texas law, charges can be filed against anyone in the car at the time of the shooting.

The situation is being reviewed by the NFL under the league's personal conduct policy and he could face suspension. McCarthy said he understands the concern about Joseph continuing to remain with the Cowboys during the process. He has been at the headquarters in Frisco working out daily. McCarthy said the Cowboys feel it's best to support Joseph at this time.

"I just want you to know that when the situation occurred, we had a lot of internal conversation that was really in-depth," McCarthy said. "Based off the information we've been given, we felt it was important to support him. He's been here every day and he's having a very productive offseason so far." The Cowboys selected Joseph with the No. 44 overall pick in the second round of the 2021 NFL draft.

As a rookie, Joseph appeared in 10 games and made two starts, registering 16 tackles, two passes defended, one fumble recovery and no interceptions.
