Cowboys Tout New Running Back as Viable Ezekiel Elliott Replacement
By J.R. De Groote
Updated May 6, 2023 at 4:34pm

The Dallas Cowboys are confident that Ronald Jones can fill the void left behind by Ezekiel Elliott's departure, despite his recent rough run.

The signing of Jones this offseason wasn't overly celebrated, with the USC product coming off a season with the Kansas City Chiefs where he rushed for just 70 yards on 17 carries during the regular season. He's even been mentioned as a potential cut candidate. But the Cowboys see Jones being a contributor behind Tony Pollard, with some additional upside at just 25 years old.

"He's an NFL quality back," Cowboys' vice president of player personnel Will McClay said. "His run style fits what we do. He's young enough to continue to grow and add something to us. And, again, we're adding an experienced back that knows what it's like in the NFL, that fits the system well, and he's got some upside to be able to be a three-down back and some of those things."

Jones is a two-time Super Bowl champ, winning a pair of titles with the Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was much more integral during the Bucs run, finishing the year as their leading rusher. Jones' best year was in 2020 when he rushed for 978 yards and seven touchdowns with a 5.1 yard per carry average.

Jones is excited to be a contributor with the the Cowboys and sees big-time potential for the squad.

"Just seeing the run they made last year," Jones said after signing. "Being one game away from being a step to the Super Bowl I think they're right there at the hump and, hopefully, I can be a part that helps them get over that hump."

We have 5 guys I like in the backfield but they can't all make the roster. I'd rather have Hunter Luepke, the UDFA fullback from NDSU, on the roster over Ronald Jones.

Malik Davis and Rico Dowdle are gonna be the wild cards I think. Also, with the athletic ability of Mazi Smith, wouldnt be surprised if we had a 335# Fullback sprinkled about at some point in the season

BTW - we dont know what changes McCarthy is gonna bring to the Kellen Moore-less Offense, they could use the FB position more or less full time which would keep Luepke in his own category

John Kuhn was a stud Packers FB from 07-14 and I think Luepke can play that role for us, plus he's good enough to take the short yardage/goal-line carries, which is what we signed Jones to do. I'd have Davis and Deuce be Pollard's backups with Luepke at FB.

I just hope we are not asking too much of Luepke. We may find out that there is a good reason he was not drafted. I hope that is not the case

Yeah, but from what I've seen and heard he's really good. NFL.com had a 5th round grade on him and he was pretty much the consensus best FB in the draft. I'm curious to see what WR's make the roster after the 3 starters. I'm hoping Jalen Tolbert makes a year 2 jump and I like Jalen Moreno-Cropper, UDFA kid out of Fresno St. But I don't think Fehoko is any good. Jalen Brooks, the 7th rounder we drafted, is probably better and I think Turpin's only value is a returner but Deuce or Moreno-Cropper could handle that.

My guess right now is they want Deuce to at least be the PR. Not sure about KR, maybe whomever survives the WR fight.

DMN;

DeMarvion Overshown was the third-round pick for the Cowboys, he played different positions for the Longhorns and worked with defensive coordinators but what kind of guy and player are Cowboys fans getting in him?

Steve Sarkisian: Yeah, I think this is an awesome fit for DeMarvion. You know, obviously, I worked for Dan Quinn for two years in Atlanta and I know the premise of that defense and it's about running and hitting. It's about having players that are versatile, that can fly to the football, that have a high football IQ, recognizing situations as they come and I think that all those things epitomize DeMarvion. You know, he can run, he will strike you when he gets there. He's very versatile, obviously a guy who played on the roof when he first got to Texas. Came down, played off the edge in space, we moved him into the box and then we actually put him on the edge and let him rush the passer this past year. So I think there's a level of versatility there. Really high football IQ guy, I just think it's an awesome fit, schematically and personality-wise.

Former Elon quarterback Matthew McKay will throw in Cowboys' rookie minicamp
Posted by Charean Williams on May 8, 2023, 8:37 PM EDT
The Cowboys didn't draft a quarterback, so they need somebody to throw at their rookie minicamp this weekend.
They have invited Elon quarterback Matthew McKay for a tryout, the school announced.
McKay went undrafted last month.
In 2022, he completed 61 percent of his passes for 2,690 yards with 21 touchdowns and four interceptions. McKay also rushed for 458 yards and three touchdowns.
McKay began his college career at North Carolina State and spent three seasons there before going to Montana State.
In his college career, he passed for 5,708 yards with 41 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He ran for 873 yards and 10 touchdowns.

I think the full week by week schedule comes out tonight. This looks like a tough group of opponents but not terrible. If we can go 3-1 against the NFC West opponents, 2-2 against the AFC East, 4-2 in the division, and win at least one of the Lions, Chargers, Panthers games, that's another 10 win season. Sounds do-able

So weird. We played the Giants on T'Giving last year. Usually alternate between an AFC and NFC opponent year to year.

updated Power rankings. Cowboys come in at #6

6) Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys made two of the most astute trades of the offseason, adding wide receiver Brandin Cooks and cornerback Stephon Gilmore for pennies on the dollar and fortifying two positions of need.

While we have trepidations about Mike McCarthy taking over as Dallas' offensive play-caller, given how he performed in the same role at the end of his Packers' tenure, there's too much talent on the Cowboys' depth chart to downgrade them too far. Dan Quinn should keep Dallas' defense as a top-five unit, especially now that Micah Parsons is becoming a full-time edge rusher.

6 Dallas Cowboys
Draft picks: 8
Previous rank: No. 6
The strength of Dallas' defense is a fierce pass rush led by Micah Parsons, DeMarcus Lawrence and Dorance Armstrong. Head coach Mike McCarthy believes that strength will intensify after the team used its first-round pick on Michigan run-stuffer Mazi Smith. It marked the first time Dallas has used a first-round selection on defensive tackle since the pick of Russell Maryland in 1991 (that one worked out pretty well). "We have an elite pass-rush group," McCarthy said, "and just the fact of the matter, when your run defense improves, obviously you've got some longer down-and-distances with it, which tilts the field toward our pass rush." Makes sense to us.

6. Cowboys (7): To the degree it's possible, is "America's Team" under the radar a bit? Let's not forget they scored the fourth-most points in the league in 2022 despite QB Dak Prescott missing five games while LT Tyron Smith and WR Michael Gallup were hurt and WR Brandin Cooks was in Houston. Dallas remains a legitimate threat to Philly.

7. Dallas Cowboys

Most improved: Defensive line
With the addition of Brandin Cooks, wide receiver could be the choice, but it's the defensive line. They selected Mazi Smith in the first round and along with the return of Johnathan Hankins, they now have bulk on the interior.
The Cowboys also re-signed Dante Fowler, who had six sacks last season, to keep core pass-rushers Micah Parsons, Dorance Armstrong, DeMarcus Lawrence and Sam Williams together. They added Junior Fehoko, a fourth-round pick, to the mix of versatile players like Osa Odighizuwa and Chauncey Golston. This is the deepest group the Cowboys have had in ages and might be the deepest in the NFL. Todd Archer

DALLAS COWBOYS: TE JAKE FERGUSON

With the departure of Dalton Schultz, second-year tight end Jake Ferguson is projected to start for the Cowboys and should have plenty of opportunities to impress while rookie tight end Luke Schoonmaker gets used to the speed of the NFL.

Ferguson saw limited playing time in 2022, but he did earn a receiving grade of 75.2, 11th among tight ends. He was also targeted on 21.8% of his routes, seventh among 58 qualifying players at the position.

My pick would be Damone Clark. He should start the year at WLB and I think he takes the opportunity and runs with it. 6'3 240 with sub 4.6 speed and the additions up front should keep him clean, where he can use his speed to track down RB's and lay some big hits in the hole.
