27 Days till Kickoff: Career Receiving TDs and Fumbles

It’s another odd day for stats. Nothing greatly stood out so we have the 27 career receiving touchdowns of Terrance Williams and KD Cannon, two of Baylor’s best receivers ever. Plus, we have the program record of 27 fumbles recovered in a single season by the defense in 1956.

First up, the receivers. Over his four years at Baylor, Williams played in 51 games, grabbed 202 receptions for 3,334 yards and scored 27 touchdowns. He is one of Baylor’s 18 consensus All-Americans thanks to his selection in 2012, and he went on to a pretty nice career with the Dallas Cowboys from 2013 to 2018. He amassed very similar stats in those six years to his four-year totals at Baylor actually.

KD Cannon is the other Baylor receiver to total 27 TD receptions in his career. He registered 195 receptions, 3,113 yards and 27 TDs in 38 games across his three seasons in Waco. While his professional football career has not quite panned out, he was a great receiver for the Bears.

Both Cannon and Williams sit at 4th in the Baylor program record books for career receiving TDs. Corey Coleman is first with 33, then Kendall Wright and Denzel Mims follow with 30 and 28 respectively.

The other stat of the day is the 1956 program record for fumbles recovered in a season by the defense. The ’56 Bears forced a whopping 43 fumbles and secured 27 of them or about 63% . That year’s team went 9-2 and beat Johnny Major’s No. 2 Tennessee Volunteers in the 1957 Sugar Bowl. The defense gave up only 73 points all year. That means the Bears were giving up 6.64 points per game — less than a touchdown — as well as forcing 3.9 fumbles per game and recovering 2.45 of those fumbles. That’s some stellar defense.
