We've lost 7 of 8 going back to last year.
I'll keep a a list of prospects in case the next season or two go full Steele.
Musts for me: Stand up coaches with prior college HC experience that are proven winners. I have NOT listed in order of preference.
Who would you guys add? I will edit/add guys.
Jamey Chadwell
Liberty, 1st year there but he wins almost everywhere he goes. 3 conference titles in two different conferences since 2015.
Jeff Traylor
UTSA. 2 +10-win seasons and 2 conference titles. 3 seasons as a college HC. 0-3 in bowls.
Tyson Helton
WKU. Adept at the Portal and won 9 games 3 times out of 4 seasons. HC for 5 years at WKU. 3-1 in Bowls.
If he can win the conference we need to make a run at him.
Coaches who look like good prospects but need more time in the minors:
Jon Sumrall
12-2 his first season at Troy and won a Conference championship.
However, just one season under his belt. If he snags another conference title or 2 in the next 1-3 years get this guy an interview.
Kane Wommack
3rd season at S. Alabama. Went from 5-7 to 10-3 from years 1 to 2. If he can get them a conference title he may start showing up on peoples radars.
Matt Entz
Won FCS titles in 2019, 2021 and lost in the title game in 2022.
If he wins another FCS title this year or next and we dump Aranda in 2024, he may be worth a look.
Good coaches but maybe not the right fit for various reasons (age etc.)
Curt Cignetti - James Madison
62. He wins everywhere he goes - D2, FCS and FBS levels. I think he has been back east his entire career.
If he was 52 I would be sunshine pumping his name all over the place.
Fritz:
63. A conference championship winner at every stop he has coached: Central Missouri, Sam Houston State, Georgia Southern, Tulane. Overall record at Tulane is average, but it's Tulane.
Other:
Bo Pelini:
I know he'll never get consideration but I would love to see him get hired for the sole purpose of seeing him scream at people for a few years and the reactions it would cause in Waco.
I'll take any of these guys tomorrow....welll...not Pelini
Had to be plugged in in Texas. BU has to recruit Texas to win. Someone not from TX is going to struggle.
Like how Matt Rhule struggled?
Very good point. Rhule did a very good job. As time goes on, it is becoming more and more evident that he and Briles did outstanding jobs. When the data changes, you have to recognize it and acnknowledge it.
So, what did he have? My bet is the Pro connection and the Super Bowl win helps with recruiting. He is a bit mercenary for me, but he delivered. You are dead on. I would be ecstatic with a Rhule type after the last 2 years!
Matt also had Joey. Give him credit for knowing he needed that connection, but not giving kudos to Joey for the recruits from Texas is silly. Rhule's first class proved to have some really good talent, but what about the next two classes ? Then Joey leaves for Tech and look at Arandas recruiting sine then ? Not saying Joey was the guy to be head coach here, but we MUST have talent from Texas and we compete with some really big boys on the block. All who post here are Baylor fans or alumni, and most love our experience at Baylor , but when recruiting kids with NO ties to Baylor, there needs to be a personal connection to convince those kids to come here. If you have never played in front of a crowd of 80,000 or more in a stadium of crazed fans , you cannot really understand what goes through a recruits mind when he walks into that atmosphere. Love our stadium and fans, but walk on Memorial stadium, Kyle Field, LSU stadium as an 18 year old high school player and experience what that is like compared to our house. Without connections ,that is a tall mountain to climb. Like it or not, we must face reality, a successful P5 coach is already being paid the kind of money Baylor can afford to pay. If they are not, they can expect a raise where they are. Any coach that has made it to the level of a head coach at a P5 program is not stupid, not judging their coaching success, but they can see how Baylor handled the Briles situation and realize that could easily have been them. Who wants to walk into that ? Really short list ! We will likely have to go to lower level coaches that have been successful and take a chance they can replicate that success at Baylor. We will also have to realize that if that happens, bigger programs will go after that coach, or like Rhule this Baylor job is only a stepping stone to other things.
