Thee I meant during the seasons I mentioned where we won 8 games or more in the regular season. I also doubt Teaff was personally attacked for his appearance and personality as part of any calls for his firing in 77 or 78 like they were coming from 5th graders as we all had to endure on this board regarding Aranda over the from 2023 until a month ago.
I would imagine that had any of those seasons required a season-closing six-game winning streak to achieve and/or followed a dismal three-win campaign, Teaff (or any other coach) would have caught heat, too. And deservedly so.

Aranda deserves a ton of credit for leading a truly remarkable -- and frankly, unlikely -- turnaround. This season is a success by any reasonable standard. And while the last six games should change our perspective about the future -- all Baylor fans should be excited IMO -- they shouldn't be used to rewrite history. And the fact of matter is our performance from November 2022 through the Iowa State game this season was unacceptable for a program with any sort of standards at all.

Fortunately, those days appear to be behind us and we can all unite around this team and staff going forward. But 2-13 in conference can't be whitewashed or dismissed. That was a long stretch of terrible football.

And yet there is still no justification for alleged adults who are educated to personally attack the coach for his appearance, his personality speaking style and calm demeanor during that time. It should be noted the time of which you speak was not coincidentally during a time Baylor administratively fell behind again when the world abruptly changed and was not supporting its program like everyone else was.
I would agree with your first sentence. Personal attacks are always juvenile. That's why any criticism I've ever had of him was job/performance related.

All I'm saying there was plenty of cause for valid criticism before this current win streak. Just as there is cause for justified praise now.

For more perspective in Teaff's 20 seasons, his best 3 seasons were two 8 win regular seasons (85 and 86) and a 10 win regular season.

Fwiw, Teaff's teams generally played tougher schedules. Don't see Michigan, USC, etc on the schedule much these days.

This is a fun season, but this team is not in the same class as, say, the 85 or 86 team. All 8 teams in seasons aren't created equal.

We didn't beat a ranked team this year - maybe we will get our chance in the bowl game - fingers crossed- so it was a nice turnaround and I am happy with the direction of the program but it was not a juggernaut schedule - so the quality of the 8-4 is probably not comparable to some 8 or 9 win seasons when you had to beat some top 20 teams.

A couple of thoughts:

1. Quality QB play is a must is college football. We have not had it in a few years and Sawyer is probably the best we have had since Seth Russell. If he and Soav return next year, this offense is going to be hard for anyone to stop.

2. NIL and other substantive changes to the landscape absolutely caught Baylor athletics flat footed. Our approach and overall strategy was completely wrong and we paid for it. I get the sense the adjustments have been made and we are trending in the right direction with recruiting. Hopefully we can hit on 3 or 4 portal additions.

3. Daves seat is no longer hot, but expectations for next season are sky high. He can't afford to lay an egg with the team he is likely to field next year. With the right defensive additions, this is a team that can win the conference and make a run at the playoff.

4. We got really lucky with the injury bug this year. If sawyer missed any time this year, we likely lose that game. Fingers crossed we can keep him healthy next season.

5. Powledge probably needs to go. The secondary is inconsistent and at times looks lost. Any significant upgrade to the play in the defensive backfield will make Baylor damn near lethal.

6. The rise of Pony Excess part 2 is a threat to Baylors long term prospects. They will continue to raise hundreds of millions of dollars and will set the NIL bar for small private schools out of reach. For sure something to keep an eye on.

I agree with everything you just said. Except 6 really. If SMU was in the XII this season they would be sitting about with us and TCU right now In the conference standings. That said NIL is going to be hard long term for every program that isnt a real money maker and that is a huge majority of the current P4 schools.

Strongly agree with #5 - I would add to #4 that we probably need to hit the portal for a solid #2 QB - I could not believe the size of that kid that came in for Sawyer at the end of the game - looks 5'9" 175 dripping wet. That won't cut it.

Actually, you started the conversation. You are the OP

I was going to question your math. I did some research and you are correct:

1916 9-1
1956 9-2
1980 10-2
2011 10-3
2013 11-2
2014 11-2
2015 10-3
2019 11-3
2021 12-2

Plus several 8 win seasons since the 1920s. If we win the bowl game, our 9 win season will be tied for 8th place.
OP did say "program history".

So if we win our bowl game, Aranda will have two of our eight best seasons ever, in number of wins, during his five year tenure - not bad.

Still trying to wrap my head around what I am seeing on the field right now given what I know about the last couple of years. If I came at this as an objective outsider simply looking at our team as it stands right now, we are a really good team, and the future is bright. I'm going to enjoy what I'm seeing now. It is fun, entertaining football, and the program seems to be on the upswing.

And so…? You were going back even further in history when we played 10 games. I would add no one was visciousky attacking Teaff and calling for Teaff to be fired during those seasons either.
Wrong. There was one year in particular that the calls for termination were brutal even by Baylor standards. I was on that team.
Yes, Good point - you beet me to the punch. Some "fans" were tired of 8 wins and a midlevel bowl game every year so the Adm. caved and moved him to Athletic Director and ................it took how long for the program to get relevant again. ????
But they got rid of Teaff and his 8 win seasons and multiple wins over Texas.

Mired in mediocrity. That's the sweet spot that Baylor leadership wants to be and we are there. Winning season. Chicken s h I t bowl game. Goody....... Goody!!!!! Rinse and repeat for the next decade.

We are Baylor.

If you watched MI/OHSt, AL/Auburn, or TX/aggy there is NO way Baylor could have competed with any of those teams. Each school could have scored at will on BU. Their SIZE, STRENGTH, speed of game is in another world. It's completely evident, historically, BU's administration, financially and BOR have never intended to compete on the level of the top tier successful universities. We are where we need to be. Mediocrity with occasional success is the pinnacle. Hopefully we can remain there (B12).
You're correct… "We are Baylor" and Baylor will always be. I'm content, hoping, to watch/record BU and tune in to entertaining college football with the two Big Conferences… or whatever it evolves to.

You sound rational and objective. I don't understand how you, specifically, always end up on Message Board Geniuses. It's not like you're a dummy. You know words. You have the best words. Everyone on this site has tremendous respect for you and your very very large, uh, brain.

Keep riding Briles' dick, buddy, you're on the right side of history with this one. I, too, miss the days when we had an athletic director, university president, and head football coach working in unison to bury sexual assault allegations, evade drug tests, and keep players eligible even if it meant bullying professors into changing grades.

It's all about the kids, right? And giving them second chances. Some may even need third, fourth, or even fifth chances, but who are we to judge? That's God's job. We just want winning football.

Sadly, those days are gone. No more backroom deals with Ken Starr, kind of like the one he negotiated to keep this tremendously wonderful p3d0phile from serving time in prison, despite admitting to horrific crimes. I can't remember that man's name, but he was prominent in the Palm Beach community and was quoted on tape as saying, "Donald Trump was my best friend for 10 years."

We are Baylor.

You've got to give RD a break. He fell into the pit over on R&P, had his sense of reason destroyed and can't get out of the ditch. It does that to people. Fortunately many of our best posters were able to escape from that black hole and live to tell about it.

Really. No one wants mediocrity. It is inane to think that. There is way too much money on the table to not put your hat in the ring to get it. If you are going to put out statements about how BU leadership wants mediocrity it is on you to provide verifiable facts that back up such statements. Certainly mistakes are made or timing may not show urgency or vision, but that does not mean they were made with the conspiracy theory level motivations we sometimes find here.

+100

The down turn over the previous 2 seasons was a bit of a perfect storm. NIL, Portal, conference realignment and uncertainty hurt Baylor. The impact was especially noticeable because Baylor failed to anticipate the importance of an NIL strategy and squandered all of the momentum that came from the 2021 seasons.

I think the administration / AD have figured out the new landscape and are positioning us well for consistent B12 championship quality and several playoff appearances over the next 10 years.

Teaff did not win 8 games a year. In 21 seasons he had three 6-5 seasons., three 7-4 win seasons, three 8-4 seasons, two 9 -3 seasons , and one 10-1 season. I am counting the bowls in these records as well btw. The two 9 win seasons were the only ones that were consecutive.

Is this from 2017? Or I missed the sarcasm. Auburn and a&m had no pop at all. Was surpised at how weak the talent level looked. a&m has some decent line play but the skill talent wasn't there at all and their qb play is hit/miss.. more miss. Michigan can't complete the forward pass but would think they'll be back.

The other 3 are good teams you but not nearly as good as they were a year or two ago.

UH, Ok St, and WVU kind of meh. TT, TCU, and a resurgent KU were all quality wins.

Powledge should just be assigned to the special teams only. Our special teams are very good. Let him handle that and find someone else to coach the safeties.

EDIT -- I just realized upon looking at our staff he doesn't handle special teams anymore. I agree. He probably needs to go.
