Another prediction: LSU (-3) cruises to a blowout win over Baylor in the Texas Bowl at 3:30 p.m. ET on Dec. 31. The Tigers suffered a costly three-game losing streak from late October to mid November, but they were able to respond with wins over Vanderbilt and Oklahoma to wrap up the regular season. Junior quarterback Garrett Nussmeier completed 22 of 31 passes for 277 yards and three touchdowns in a 37-17 win against the Sooners, helping the Tigers easily cover the spread as 6-point favorites.

Nussmeier completed 63.7% of his passes for 3,735 yards and 26 touchdowns in the regular season, while running backs Caden Durham and Josh Williams combined for more than 1,000 rushing yards and 11 scores. Baylor rattled off a six-game winning streak to close the campaign, but the Bears lost to all three ranked opponents they faced this season. SportsLine's model does not expect them to hold up against a strong SEC opponent in this matchup, as the Tigers are covering the spread in well over 70% of simulations.

More proof of the SEC's domination in hypothetical matchups.

So where can I buy Baylor vs LSU Texas bowl merch? I've seen a few online but they all look terrible and fan made. Need something official.

I'm guessing someone on here was involved in this. It was near the the end of the 85 Liberty Bowl, 2-3 guys were walking the bottom row of the stadium with a sign showing to the cameras. It said LSU. As soon as the camera showed it, the L folded in a and an X unfolded from the back.

LSU
SUX

Here is a quick replay of the game

That team was a hair away from playing in the Cotton Bowl against Auburn and Bo Jackson.

Yep. Lost to the whorns in the reg season finale, if I recall correctly.

IMO that '85 team and the one that followed in '86 were actually the overall two most talented teams of the Teaff era, even though he had more accomplished teams (i.e. conference champions) in '74 & '80. Close gut wrenching losses to Arky & UT in '85 and SMU & aggy in'86 prevented back to back SWC titles that should've been for those 2 teams.

Certainly, they could be correct, but the losses to three ranked teams were before Baylor got the offense untracked with Sawyer. And for LSU, are you going to hang your hat on wins over Vandy and OU......really?

This prediction smells of a bad historical assumption and bias and completely fails even a basic eye test.

LSU's QB Nussmeier has announced he is returning for another season at LSU.

I think its a good move in his part. He was considered one of the better qbs in the coming draft class going into the season, but really didn't have the kind of year he wanted to lock him in as a sure-fire first round pick. He needs a big year to reach that echelon.

Should make for a fun qb duel in Houston.

I think this is one of those situations where NIL actually plays in favor of college football fans. It makes it much easier for a guy like this to make the decision to stay one more year cause he can still make a pretty nice paycheck.

Guys opt out of meaningless bowl games and guys go to the portal and the sec isn't the only conference that deals with that.
Just because we've normalized quitting before seasons are over doesn't mean that's the right or sensible thing to do.

I'm not even a fan of bowl games. In general, I think they're a stupid way to end a season. But if we're going to continue to play them, we need to stop acting like they don't matter. The teams that take those games seriously should be rewarded for it. Those who don't and make excuses when their JV teams get their asses kicked shouldn't.

I'm very much with Fran Brown and Deion Sanders on this one. If there's a game on the schedule, I expect players to play and compete. That should be the expectation. And those programs that refuse to make it so should be called out for their entitlement and general softness.

Non-NY6/playoff bowl games began to lose any form of relevance when the transfer portal came about, and the expansion of the CFP more or less cements their irrelevance outside of the rare situation where there is an extreme outcome - i.e. Ohio State losing to Missouri (because Ohio State's 3rd team should be talented enough to win that game) or FSU losing to Georgia by infinite points (because FSU's 3rd team should be talented enough to not lose by infinite points).

The answer for any team disappointed by their bowl game is always the same: win more games. Also, stop whining!

Sure and agreed, but it doesn't change the reality that non-CFP/NY6 bowls do not carry the positive/negative implications into the following season that they once did outside of extreme outcomes. In the case of Baylor, whether or not Baylor defeats LSU won't mean much unless either team obliterates the other one (i.e. 17 to 21+ point differential).

What season is it exactly?

What exactly is a bowl game - is it an in-season game? No.
Does it count towards the finish in conference standings? No.
Is it a real sanctioned playoff game? No.*
Does a team have to play a bowl game? No.
Do players opt out of playing? Yes. All the time.

I don't see the point in calling players or programs out for opting out. They do so because they view the games as meaningless in one degree or another.

It would be like if after Super Bowl, the Texans and Cowboys were invited to play in a matchup together. Some players may play, some may opt out. Fans may show up and cheer. The game would still mean nothing, though.

*For argument's sake if we call the committee's choices a playoff, that still leaves over 30 bowl games that have nothing to do with a "playoff".

Do people watch it and write/talk about it? Then it has some meaning.

Media will compile lists of conference bowl records. That matters.
Schools will add it to their record and have ten win seasons.
Players will get extra practice.
Players will get to showcase skills.
Players who have a couple years of their life to play high level football get another game.

Families will plan trips to go see games.
People get to watch live football throughout the holidays instead of hallmark movies.
TV networks will make tons of money.

It literally counts on your record. Any game that counts on your record is part of the season.

If FBS wants to get rid of bowl games and expand the playoff -- or even add a secondary tournament -- I'd be all for it. But as long as bowl games are scheduled, played and count toward a team's record, they're part of the season.

It's frankly strange to me that this is even a conversation.

Baylor recruiting could benefit by a narrow victory over LSU. Clearly, the larger the margin of victory the better but even 1 point helps.

Baylor fans will be happy regardless of the margin.

I think the a win of any kind is big, just in terms of preserving the winning streak into the offseason.

If we're entering next season on a seven-game winning streak, that will be a big part of this team's narrative heading into the Auburn game next year.

Keep that boulder rolling mossless.

Looks like as of right now LSU will be missing three current starters...2 OL and their TE. Sounds like as of now the defense will be full strength.

LSU begins bowl prep having to be 'creative' at several positions
by Glen West22 hours ago
LSU would love to have Will Campbell and Emery Jones as the bookend tackles for the Texas Bowl on Dec. 31. It would ideally want Mason Taylor to be on the receiving end of Garrett Nussmeier's passes for one last game.

Those three players have declared for the NFL draft and elected not to participate in the Tigers' matchup with Baylor on New Year's Eve, something that Brian Kelly completely understands and the program supports as they prepare for their pro careers.

But the reality is there's a game to be played and Kelly said the players who are on the field will be well prepared.

"We'll have a very competitive football team who will represent LSU in a manner we expect. Every player that is on that practice field is 100% committed and excited about being there. When you have that, great morale and will play hard for LSU. When you're talking about representing the brand, you want a team that's going to compete their tail off," Kelly said.

"This is a look at what 2025 could look at. We're in the transfer portal and we'll build positional depth as well as we continue to work through the transfer portal. But we wanna blend some youth with some positional depth as well. We're addressing that as we speak."

On the offensive line specifically, we'll get a real close look at how the purple and gold plan to live life without what's been a stable core for the previous three seasons. Kelly said that veteran Miles Frazier will play in the bowl game and has position versatility that could bump him out to tackle if need be.

But outside of that, Kelly ran down a long list of guys who will see the field against Baylor in that offensive line room.

"Tyree Adams will get an opportunity. We have great confidence in him, Paul will continue to play for us, DJ Chester getting an opportunity, Bo Bordelon gets an opportunity to play some football, Coen Echols is a guy we have a lot of trust in," Kelly said. "We really like the progression of Weston Davis and can play tackle on both sides."

Tight end is the other position to note because with Taylor moving on to the NFL and Ka'Morreun Pimpton enter the transfer portal, the Tigers are very thin. Trey'Dez Green is really the only scholarship guy left who has spent time at tight end so it'll be interesting to see how 'creative' the Tigers get with him some looks. Bo Bordelon has been a blocker on the edge at tight end for run packages but LSU really might wind up leaning into its receivers even more, Green included.

"We feel very comfortable we can put our offense in a position that can be very effective. Clearly we don't have Mason and he was a great target but we're excited about the next step for him," Kelly said. "We have other guys on our roster who are gonna be able to step in and we feel great about what they can do for us."

Lastly is the health of Nussmeier, who did go down in that Oklahoma game before returning. Kelly said that Nussmeier has been out there for both practices but the Tigers are putting him on a 'pitch count' for now to help his shoulder continue healing.

Kelly was also asked about Nussmeier returning, the first time he's been able to speak publicly since the senior quarterback made his decision to return.

"Knowing Garrett there was always a sense of he's waited for his opportunity. He has always been such a proponent of LSU and wanting to be here, I think there was a sense he was going to come back but we never took it for granted. We did our due diligence, we made our case as to why it was in everybody's best interest to come back for another year. You have to re-recruit and we're excited that he's back," Kelly said.

The point here is that the games don't mean anything as related to conference or playoff races and that's why players and even entire teams, will opt out.
And my point is that this mentality is one of a growing number of things the so-called leaders within college football should have never tolerated or normalized.

If these schools and conferences want to continue to collect the bowl money, there should be a baseline expectation that they field competent, representative teams for these games. Otherwise, stop asking sponsors to put on these farcical games and your fans to spend a bunch of money to travel to and attend them.

If these are just a cheap money grab (like virtually everything else in this stupid sport), then the media and fans need to stop covering and watching them and they need to stop being counted on records.

Until that happens, those that treat these games with some level of respect should garner praise for doing so, and those who don't should be called out for it. Except for in rare cases, opting out of and skipping these games is an act of entitlement, plain and simple. Treat that decision as such.
