Bruh we won 10 plus games four out of his last five years, had the nations number one offense in 3 of those years, and were ranked second in the country before Seth Russell got injured. We were just starting to get top 25 classes and five star recruits.

We were ABSOLUTELY on the path to compete for a national title. To act otherwise is just coping so it doesn't hurt as much that we wasted it.

That's fine but when you look at the Top Rated Defenses for nearly every year you orgasm over, BU was never better than #36 in Defense and actually got worse the last 3 years you blow. They were #113 , #78 & #49 during these years of having the #1 offense while losing 17-47 to Oklahoma State, 42-53 to that commuter school UCF, 27-41 to West Virginia. Most National Champions have a Top 10 defense!

We were #1 in one particular category more than anywhere else......PENALTIES! We were the most penalized team in 2013, 2014, 2nd most penalized in 2015.

Art made a horrible decision to only carry 2 real QBs when Seth was trying to run over linebackers and got himself hurt. Most Big 12 teams carried 4, 5 and even 6 QBs.

The other high school decision he made was to ignore the light bulb that was trying to come on in 2015 so we lost to OU, TCU & UT that season. That TCU team was starting something like 3 or 4 freshmen on defense and that 2015 UT team was one of, if not their worst team, in modern era football and we are winging it downfield with a guy who was not a QB. First in a monsoon in Ft. Worth and then against a sorry UT team.

National title? Ha. That's about like saying the 1980 team, which gave SJSU a gift in Waco, was going to go undefeated and play somebody other than Alabama in the Cotton bowl.

You can not ignore the fact that, because our offense was so good and because they scored so quickly, other offenses has 3-5 more possessions than average per game.

Yes, this was widely discussed at the time. Considering the number of snaps our defense spent on the field, being ranked in the 30s was actually quite good.

If you look at a more relevant metric, like Points Per Play, which adjusts for tempo, we were #35, #47, and #51 for 2013-2015. Not nearly as bad as Thee suggests, but not nearly good enough to compete for championships. Whether we would have ever gotten there is pure speculatalion, but the point remains, he wasn't Cignetti. Average defense doesn't win championships.

The team-by-team breakdown shows how individual national champions stack up in per-play scoring efficiency:
2023 Michigan: 0.582 (538 points on 924 plays)2022 Georgia: 0.579 (616 points on 1,064 plays)2021 Georgia: 0.608 (579 points on 952 plays)2020 Alabama: 0.672 (630 points on 937 plays)2019 LSU: 0.686 (726 points on 1,058 plays)2018 Clemson: 0.612 (664 points on 1,085 plays)2017 Alabama: 0.428 (482 points on 1,127 plays)2016 Clemson: 0.443 (588 points on 1,327 plays)2015 Alabama: 0.439 (526 points on 1,198 plays)2014 Ohio State: 0.461 (672 points on 1,458 plays)

Any idea where Baylor was? Not the rank but the points per play

Tempo vs. Efficiency: Teams like 2014 Ohio State scored a massive amount of total points (672) but did so utilizing an incredibly high volume of total snaps (1,458), resulting in a lower per-play metric than more methodical, recent teams like 2023 Michigan.Historical Shift: The average over the last five champions (20192023) is 0.625, compared to just 0.477 for the five champions before them (20142018), highlighting how dramatically offensive efficiency has scaled up over the past decade.

National Leader: During the 2013, 2014, and 2015 seasons, the Baylor Bears offense ranked #1 in the nation in points scored per game under head coach Art Briles.

Efficiency: The 2013 squad was the most efficient and highest-scoring group of the era, averaging an astonishing 7.5 yards per play and a historic 52.4 points per game.

Play Volume: The volume peaked in 2014 with 1,138 snaps, fueled by an ultra-fast, no-huddle tempo

2015
625 points, 1103 plays, .566 pts/play

2014
627 points, 1138 plays, .551 pts/play

2013
681 points, 1074 plays, .634 pts/play

2012
578 points, 1072 plays, .539 pts/play

When you compare to the same years, BU was looking very stout against opponents

It's hard not to laugh at those dogging on that stretch of football coached by Briles. No sane Baylor fan would talk down on that stretch of football. Also those BU teams would skull **** thees team for 60 minutes

NEW: Art Briles tells @Brett_McMurphy he waited 10 years for a second chance on American soil, and Eastern New Mexico delivered:

The Greyhounds have lost 22 of their last 30 games and were picked seventh in the conference, "That inspires me. That doesn't scare me. We're not gonna be a 'deuce,' we're up there in the 'face cards.' The one thing that's gonna help us early is nobody's gonna know what we're gonna do. Good luck getting some Italian film."

Dogging it? Telling the truth. Great offense (Sam Houston Wofford, Lou-Monroe, Buffalo, Northwestern State) and horrible defense, special teams and a horrendous lack of discipline. I've never been skulled so I'm assuming this is some gay thing that you participated in often?

I played with at least 35 NFL players in my 4 years. Several of them made All-Pro and one is in the NFL HOF. Singletary and McElroy would have hurt a few players and sent them over to Hillcrest.

Record Book. Look it up!

I don't normally respond to queers who refer to sexual deviate BS but for you I will make an exception. Maybe I can talk you down from the pink ledge you seem to be perched upon.

Saw the 60 Minutes segment tonight on Indiana's National Championship Football team. They went from worst to first in three seasons. That could have been us had our Regents decided not to blow up Baylor Football.

It could not have been us because Art Briles had already been here for seven years and at no point did we get to first (in the nation). Look, I really enjoyed the Art Briles years, but there is just a lot of revisionist history around him. He was not Bear Bryant (and he wasn't Curt Cignetti, for that matter).

Bear Bryant coached during an era where you could warehouse talent to prevent other teams from signing it.

Curt Cignetti is coaching during an era where you can openly pay players.

CAB's tenure existed between these eras...and yet he took a program that was roadkill for the better part of two decades and brought it a new stadium, a heisman, and two conference championships while UT and OU were still part of it. Without a doubt the greatest coach in Baylor football history.

No one is arguing that Art Briles wasn't a great coach or the greatest in Baylor history (although I think many would still say Grant Teaff, but rationale minds can disagree on this). CAB is still not Curt Cignetti. The rules are what they are. A coach can only exist within the confines of the era they are in. The point is, Cignetti won a national championship at a dumpster fire program in year 3. Art Briles resurrected a dumpster fire program, but did not win a national championship, and even if he would have in the future, it would have been in a much different scenario by that time than what Cignetti did.

The original poster said "Indiana could have been us if we hadn't fired Briles." It literally could not have been.

Cignetti also did it during a time where he could buy a roster and turn it over quickly via the transfer portal. Had Art Briles been given much of the same opportunity to do so, there is a considerably higher chance that he would have won bigger, sooner. Briles had to build trust with a donor base, players & their families, and a reputation over the course of YEARS before Baylor was perennially in the title contention conversation.

Also, regardless of Indiana's prior lack of success, they are a much bigger school with a far larger donor base that has had success in other sports (see IU basketball). Not to take away Cignetti's accomplishment; it is amazing. Just silly to think of the comparison in this way.

I think it's silly to continuously self-flagellate ourselves over a coach who was fired 10 years ago and create revisionist history scenarios over things that literally did not happen. Again, Briles was a great coach, probably the best we've ever had and probably the most prolific offensive mind of his generation. But if the differentiating factor was Cignetti's ability to pay, then why hasn't Texas Tech (with a comparable fan base) won a national championship? I don't understand this need to defend Art Briles legacy even against reason. When the national spotlight was on us in 2013 and 2014 in the Fiesta Bowl and the Cotton Bowl, we lost both in embarrassing fashion. Again, that's not to take away from Art Briles genius or what he did for the program. But let's stop reinventing him as a shoe-in national championship coach, because he never won one and didn't come particularly close - and that's ok, a lot of brilliant, historic coaches don't.

Cignetti is a far better coach than Joey. Cignetti's ability to win FAST is a product of said coaching ability being combined with resources and tools that Briles did not have.

Simple.

But if Briles had the ability to improve the roster quickly through NIL or transfer portal, other schools would have had the ability to improve their roster just as quickly. Which means that's not an advantage or a something that you can point to as a factor that would have made Baylor a contender at the level that Indiana is. You can't just say "well if Art Briles could have paid players and used the transfer portal, we would have had a national championship roster like Indiana). Because all of our competition would have been using the same methods as us to get players. And we know that during Briles tenure, he recruited in the middle of the pack in the national picture (it was trending upwards at the end). There is no reason to think that his portal hauls and NIL would not have been the same, relative to our competition.

So, if all things are equal on the roster front (in terms of blue chip ratio, experience, NFL level talent, etc.), what is the separator then? It's the coaching ability and the ability to put all the pieces together (offense, defense, special teams, continuity depth, i.e. not just depth of stars but depth with the right skillsets and experience, scheme, and culture). Art Briles showed he was elite at all of that, but not the level Cignetti is. The proof is in their respective trophy cabinets.

So its not simple. It's wishful thinking in order to justify hero worship and revisionist history of a great, but not national championship (at least not to that point in his career) coach.

You boys have been playing that ragged card for years now and that dawg still won't hunt. Championship teams have @$$ kicking defenses, discipline and don't have to depend on conference foes to slip in as a CO~Champ or as a Champion.

The 1980 team was the only Baylor team in modern history to administer pigskin enemas to every single conference foe, we left no doubt. THE ONLY ONE!! With all of the offense Briles threw out there why couldn't WE beat Oklahoma State in 2013 (17 to 49) when lots of skulls were dawg drilled or in 2014 (27-41 loss to a 7-6 West Virginia team when puckered keisters were pillaged. You apologists that still hang on to a delusional dream are truly living in a fantasy world.

Assessing the best college football team has many factors influencing the decision. Yes, Alabama drilled us but the Michigan State collapse was ultra-embarrassing nationwide. We were called massive chokers for weeks. We couldn't stop a team of weak widow women in the Cotton Bowl. While I'm at it, what was the name of that Commuter school that pole axed us in the Fiesta?

At least our dog drilling was by the most storied college football team ever. It was only 2-13 at halftime in 1981. Yes, we gave up 14 points in the 4th Q. I seem to recall a Baylor team giving up 21 points in the 4th Q to a far inferior opponent. We gave up points due to interceptions and fumbles. Lack of discipline in 2014 was the culprit.

Here is what you limp-wristed Madden Heroes can't grasp and I know why. That's why I go easy on you. If you had changed your commitment at the last minute to ditch the Longhorns and head to Waco to build on a promise I made to Coach Teaff to leave Baylor in 4 years in far better shape football wise than what it was in 1977, you would defend your teammates, coaches and all associated with that program which was provided minimal resources yet overcame monumental obstacles to build on each year an excellent program. I've never said we were the best team ever but I did say one of the best. Art started a fire in Waco and left us in smoking dumpster fire. It took him 10+ years to admit to the Longhorn offer? He's coaching at Eastern New Mexico because he made some horrible decisions and some no decisions. It's over. He had me hooked a few years there but if you ever played at the highest levels you could see what was looming on the horizon. I blame Starr & McCaw for losing control and not holding Art to the Baylor standards.

Yea, conference titles was the top we could do with Briles. (and given our mediocre football history that was pretty dang good)

Funny.

I did well enough to retire 10 years ago at 56 years old. I was able to buy a small rancho on a high hill overlooking a Hill Country lake, build my retirement home big enough for all 3 kids & 5 grandkids to hang out all summer and I get to pretend to be a rancher with my herd of rag-tag pet cows. I tend to a 2500 sq ft vegetable garden, grab my chainsaw multiple times a week cutting cedar and pretty much do whatever I want to do every single day. As a matter of fact, I am so happy I have to consult a calendar multiple times each month when I need to know what day of the week it is.

Mark Adickes is a friend & teammate. He's a great doctor. I've got a few other doctor & lawyer friends that chose a very different lifestyle than myself. We are all different. I have been richly blessed to be where I am today, with my wife, my loyal friend & church friends.

You boys can try all you want to drag me down or insinuate how pitiful I am. I'll bet I'm happier and more at peace than a large percentage of you boys. I wish you all well. I've got it made. I want all Baylor folks to be successful and prosperous.

Conference championships may have been the best we did in the relatively brief time he was here, but there's no question that our program was still on an upward trajectory. To even get to conference championships, and not just winning but dominating most of our conference opponents, was an absolutely remarkable accomplishment from where the program was when he began. It's not a stretch to think that we would have continued improving because he was having this success with mediocre recruiting classes. He turned Baylor into a household name and four and five star recruits were beginning to look at us. To nitpick him for not being more successful is ridiculous.

It seems obvious that Cignetti is a great coach, but his rapid success occurred under a completely different set of circumstances. Not saying he couldn't have turned Baylor around the hard way by simply recruiting your own guys and developing them, but I don't think it is a given he would have done it as quickly or as well as Briles did.

So the season opener for the Greyhounds in Las Vegas against New Mexico Highlands is not going to be on FloSports. But you can get it on the RMAC conference stream at the link above. A single game day pass is available.

Thursday August 27th at 6pm, an Art Briles offense takes the field once again.

I started attending Baylor football games in 1980. One of the first games I saw at Baylor Stadium was against SMU who was also ranked in the top 20. The attendance records for this game shows only 35,000 people were there. When Baylor beat Rice that same year to clinch the Cotton Bowl birth, the attendance records show only 26,000 fans were watching this game in Houston.

From a fan perspective, the Brile's era brought an excitement not seen at Baylor on gamedays in Waco. It was a fun time that brought excitement to a fan base that hadn't had much to be excited about for a long time.

Attendance records show this to be the case when you compare 2013 to 1980. In a time when crowd attendance is either flattening or declining for sporting events, why the lower attendance in 1980?

Because the only game action visible from the concession/restroom area in Baylor Stadium was the apogee of particularly towering punts. But think about that. Open concourses were unheard of and unnecessary back in the days of generally lower-scoring offenses and 10-7 or 14-9 final scores.

I think that's due to the fact that discourse around the topic has become extremely polarized, just like seemingly ever other topic in public life. On the one side, you have those who carry water for the administration. They may have strong opinions about premarital sex, sexual assault, impropriety in general, or maybe they don't care about sports and abhor the black eye the scandal gave to the University. They see the selective disclosure from the administration/BOR at the time as damning and view Briles as the "bad dude," and nothing will persuade them to think otherwise.

On the other side, you have the Briles fanboys, who cling to the idea that Art did absolutely nothing wrong, was railroaded by an evil "Board of Idiots," and/or was the victim of a witch-hunt initiated by the University of Texas.

Any attempt at a nuanced discussion will inevitably be shouted down by one of the two sides, and often both. The truth lies, as it often does, somewhere in the middle of those two camps, in my opinion.

This. I do not really understand the Briles hate. It was an unprecedented period in Baylor sports history where we a national brand, in the conversation of the national championship, and all around just a fun time to be a Baylor sports fan. It is possible to respect Thee and his times and Briles - these are not in opposition.

You don't have to be a fanboy to realize that something was off with the way our BOR handled the situation. The truth may have lied somewhere in the middle, but the people that controlled the narrative, knowing this truth, chose to publicly disparage Briles and make him the face of the scandal while privately deciding they couldn't fire him for cause and writing him a letter of exoneration. That is a scandal in and of itself.

Didn't Pepper Hamilton find 105 instances of Institutional (Regent) mismanagement of Baylor. Only 10% if those were in the Athletic Dept, yet the corrupt unqualified Regents were able to successfully, in public, lay ALL of Baylor's problems which they caused the vast majority of, on the shoulders of ONE man. Thank you to the unqualified Regent preachers, Regent widows, Regent friends of friends, and Regent lawyers. (where were the actual experienced business men)
Where were the Regent names listed publicly who failed Baylor? Nowhere
What was their punishment? None
What happened to their reputations? Nothing

When he was playing for us, Thee U was part of Baylor beyond just football (was it phi delts, delta tau chi, or tri-lambs?). He still is. Put together a team full of men like Thee U and it will pay off, both in the short term and in the long run.

I beg to differ… you were skull ****ed plenty… bama ring a bell? They quite literally bent you over a log twice. I get it… you were a decent football player 100 years ago. No one gives a **** anymore. And I stand by my comment Briles elite teams would have did what Bama did to you. Your feelings are hurt that Briles had multiple teams better than Teaffs best team.

What's funny is by year 3, Maybe sooner, ENMU would absolutely handle Dave Aranda's Baylor Bears.
