Genius? A genius does not try to go through a Big 12 season with 3 QBs (actually only 2 real QBs) letting these QBs lower their heads and try to run over the defense. A quick check of other Big 12 rosters showed them carrying 4, 5 even 6 QBs that season.

Transforming our offense? A 7th grade junior high coach would have done that "transforming" prior to the TCU debacle where our scrub high school part time QB is trying to wing it downfield in a small hurricane against a Toad defense that was forced to play with 3 or 4 freshmen due to injuries. Follow that with a game of throwing it up for grabs versus one of, if not the, worst Longhorn teams in modern history.

Finally the 7th grade genius light bulb came on vs. UNC. Finally!

It's impossible for me to let go. 46 years is like a month to me. Going around in circles is fun for me. I'd be willing to go another 46 years if I had them.

Fun game. 7 TD's by both teams. Tough One pt loss. 35-34. Art doesn't have a skilled QB yet. The QB was wildly inaccurate at times. The team had over 220 yards rushing though.QB missed several wide open receivers for big gains.
Art's big mistake was the fake extra pt try for the win. Should have just lined up for a 2 pt conversion try. Good to see him coaching.

I watched the game and I'm convinced he can coach up #12 or #17 to play like a sound QB. That team will improve. The fake kick for extra point was a definite brain-fart, the offense has a much better chance of scoring a 2-pt conversion. I enjoyed the game, lot's of offense by both teams.

Heartbreak in Las Vegas: Greyhounds Fall 35-34 in Thrilling Season Opener

LAS VEGAS, N.M. The Eastern New Mexico football team made their season debut against New Mexico Highlands in Las Vegas, N.M Thursday night. The back and forth battle ultimately led to the Greyhounds coming up agonizingly short in a 35-34 loss In Head Coach Art Briles' highly anticipated debut, the Greyhounds (0-1) had many shining moments and signs

The game quickly developed into a clash of styles, with the Greyhounds asserting their dominance in the trenches early and often. After Highlands opened the scoring with a passing touchdown, the Greyhounds answered with a physical, methodical drive that showcased their commitment to the run. Trei Kibbles punched it in from 1 yard out to tie the game, capping off an 8-play, 55-yard drive that sent a clear message to the Cowboys' defense.

The second quarter saw the Greyhounds' rushing attack truly take over. Following a Highlands touchdown, the Hounds orchestrated a grueling 15-play, 75-yard drive that ate up over five minutes of clock. QB Lake Bennett was the catalyst, breaking tackles and churning out yards before bursting into the end zone for a 20-yard touchdown run. Highlands responded with a quick passing strike, but the Greyhounds refused to flinch. Executing a brilliant two-minute drill before the half, Bennett found Jose Trevino for a 9-yard touchdown pass, sending the teams into the locker room deadlocked at 21-21.

Highlands managed to pull ahead in the third quarter, capitalizing on a long, sustained drive to take a 28-21 lead. However, the Greyhounds' resilience was on full display in the fourth. Striking with lightning speed, Emeka Megwa injected life into the ENMU sideline with a spectacular 31-yard rushing touchdown. Megwa's powerful run tied the game at 28-28 and seemingly shifted the momentum back to the visiting team.
The Cowboys responded with a long, time-consuming drive that ended in a touchdown, putting them ahead 35-28 with just 6:27 remaining. With their backs against the wall, the Greyhounds dug deep. Quarterback Clifton Cooper engineered a masterful 8-play, 65-yard drive that resulted in a 4th down 6-yard touchdown pass to Jose Trevino with only 1:34 left on the clock.

In a bold and aggressive move that defines Coach Briles' philosophy, the Greyhounds opted to go for the win and a two-point conversion rather than settling for a tie and overtime. Clayton Vincent took the handoff and surged toward the end zone on a fake extra-point attempt, but a swarm of Highlands defenders managed to stop him just inches short of the goal line.

Key Performers
The Rushing Attack: The three-headed monster of Clifton Cooper, Lake Bennett, and Emeka Megwa was nearly unstoppable, churning out 220 yards on the ground and wearing down the Highlands defense. Cooper led the team with 56 yards, while Bennett (51 yards) and Megwa (40 yards) each contributed explosive touchdown runs.

WR Jose Trevino: Trevino was a crucial weapon in the red zone, securing two vital touchdown catches. He finished the game with 3 receptions for 37 yards.
LB Matthew Quartieri: Quartieri was a force to be reckoned with, anchoring the defense with a gritty, physical performance. He recorded 7 total tackles and provided vital leadership as the defense spent over 37 minutes on the field against a high-tempo offense.

Statistical Highlights

While the scoreboard didn't go their way, the Greyhounds proved they can impose their will on opponents. They rushed for 220 yards on 36 attempts, averaging an impressive 6.1 yards per carry, demonstrating a physicality that will serve them well throughout the 2026 season.

Prior to GT's arrival in 1972 BU had gone 17-54 overall and 10-39 in SWC play since 1965.

1. Grant Teaff was great. But you don't have to be an Art Briles homer to see that comparing getting 21 years to win two conference titles like coach Teaff vs 8 years for Art Briles is not fair.

Briles I am sure would have gotten another unshared conference title if he had another 13 seasons to try

(In the end both did great at Baylor…especially compared to what our leadership had allowed to happen to our program before they got here and saved BU football)

2. The actual plan around at Baylor for the stadium was to spend money upgrading Floyd Casey.

Only around the time Briles was coaching here did it become clear a major upgrade would cost $80-$100 million or more….and it became clear the land by campus (earmarked for the possible Bush Presidential library) would be available

Pre-Bush selecting SMU for his library spot…there were NOT plans to put the stadium on campus or move from the Floyd Casey location

It was not until Feb. of 2008 that Bush publicly selected SMU…thus allowing Baylor leadership to begin bouncing around ideas for what to do with the land site by campus (eventually deciding on a new stadium)

There were a large number of former players (some of them the most famous and beloved) who openly discussed how Art's lack of control and discipline would eventually destroy all of the good he did.

I won't make the 7 hour drive out there to stay at the Sands Motel (4 minute walk to campus) but I will pull for your well being. The category of "moral victory" isn't farcical when you're talking about a new coach in his first game with a new team.

Now when you're talking about a head coach on his 2nd contract in his sixth season...we're going to have a bunch of moral victories this year.

He did this while Darrell Royal was stockpiling talent for years down in Austin and the same thing was taking place over in College Station along with some rampant cheating.

RG3 was a Godsend. A generational player & a QB. Ours was Mike Singletary, a linebacker, which is very difficult to pull votes for the Heisman. Mike only lasted 12 years in the NFL and was a 10 time pro bowler.

Grant's teams won the conference twice outright without sharing it or hoping a team would lose.

The Baylor in the 70's and early 80's was essentially run out of a shoebox with a very limited budget. When I got there in 1977 there were still 1 gallon paint cans filled with concrete and a pipe stuck between them for weight training. Universal gyms were still in use.

The new stadium was earmarked for the Brazos River across from campus even before Baylor got into the Big 12.

I understand how you young kids adore Art. I did too until I learned a few things. GT left Baylor in great shape. I can't say that about Art.

Thee is correct. Whatever Briles inherited, Teaff had much less. Plus, Teaff was in a tougher league.

As Thee points out, Teaff saved football at BU. And, as he points out, he left BU in great shape, which Briles did not.

Grant Teaff was without question the greatest coach in BU history. It's not even close.

The incompetence, political bias, and negligence by the Regents had Baylor in a bad spot. Sorry to disagree. I watched Every Teaff game. Man, maybe, Length of tenure, yes, but coach , no. Baylor only achieved consistent National prominence and dominance year after year under Art.
And Baylor didn't keep Teaff either, in his prime.
