SC alumni could buy and sell Oregon;s, tOSU and Michigans four times over. Their problem is that their alumni do not care about football anymore.

The short list from 4 years ago, thinking each was the next Briles, have shown over time that each is not. The short list from this site from 2022 & 23 should be abandoned here. That said the prevailing short list here is meaningless anyway. For that matter the existence of short lists posted is meaningless.

1. Hire an existing HC, not a coordinator.
2. Hire a HC with a winning history.
3. Hire an OFFENSIVE minded HC. (Not another Rhule or Aranda)
4. Hire a HC with Texas or at least Southern roots.
5. Hire a younger vs older HC, no older retreads.
6. Interview Black coaching candidates also.

I don't think #4 is all that necessary anymore. Good to have but not essential.

Give me a winner who knows what he's doing. He and his staff can figure out the culture and ties. Baylor's geography does most of the work for recruiting Texans.

Knowing high school coaches and the culture of Texas and the South is important as well as an actual southern accent Ask LSU how their Yankee HC worked out..

Elko seems to be disproving that theory at aggy. Winning is all that matters. These days you need a good coach and a GM who finds talent. You also need money,.

Correct. It's not just one thing, BUT, winning has always and always will start by hiring the right HC.

The coach doesn't need Texas ties. The sport has evolved. Rhett Lashlee had 0 Texas ties before becoming SMU OC and then HC. Matt Rhule had none but hired some folks who did. Jordan Mack, Jayden McGowan, Louis Brown, Travion Barnes, etc. Don't think any of these kids have Texas ties.

GM is very important. This lets the coaches do more coaching. Blanchard at Tech is the engine.

With the game changing it's time to end the retread. Dabo can't or won't adjust to modern football so quit naming him as an option for a potential new coach.

Stop with the "if we hire someone young who succeeds then they'll leave us…" And? That would mean they won. The goal is to win. The goal is not to go .500 so we're stuck in mediocrity.

I root for the bears every Saturday and every day one of our teams plays. No idea what happens to Aranda after this year. Hopefully we win the Big12 but should we go 5-7 and find ourselves searching for a coach I think a name that would enter the talk is Lincoln Riley. Not saying he takes the job or we should hire him. I just think it's a name that bubbles up. I don't think he's an LA guy. I don't know if USC has the resources to consistently compete with Ohio State, Oregon, and Michigan, but the expectation is obviously there while playing in front of a half empty stadium on a good day.

Newberry- an alum who has done well at Navy. Can he operate the transfer portal?

Eck- he has UNM competitive. No small feat.

Danielson- talks like someone the Baylor higher ups would love. Has had some good seasons at Boise.

Vigen- Kliemann had success going FCS to Big12

Taylor- WMU is playing great ball. MAC schools have become harder to win at with the portal and NIL.

Traylor- UTSA was flying high but lately have been just kinda flying. Pre portal and NIL I think this hire makes more sense.

To the defeatists who say we can't hire a good coach, the Baylor job is well respected in the coaching ranks. Pays pretty well, provides great facilities, and doesn't come with unreasonable expectations. Winning a conference title buys you a lot of leeway.

Spot on about Blanchard and what he's done at Tech. Most people didnt realize it at the time. Kinda like the nut tap that makes you queasy about 5 minutes later.

I don't think the Texas connection thing is as big of a deal as it used to be. High school recruiting is not as big of a deal as it used to be. Star ratings who cares? Plenty of four or five star players are duds, while plenty of two and three star players end up being better than advertised after playing in CUSA or the Sunbelt and are better known commodities

People on here are going to pearl clutch at the Lincoln Riley suggestion, but the guy has skins on the wall and knows how to develop and put quarterbacks in the NFL. Hiring him would give our program much needed credibility and a shot in the arm. I seriously doubt Baylor would even consider him, but I think he could do well here

The buyout alone, meaning just the buyout, not new salary of Riley not new staff salary not buyout of our current staff and not budget for players just buyout of Riley is about 80 million right now. We don't have that just stuffed away in a couch somewhere at the athletic facilities or in Pat Neff. It's not going to happen even if Riley begged for the job and simply agreed to no raise from what USC is paying.

I've not been overly impressed with McGuire at Tech. I like him just fine, and appreciate the credibility he bought us in the aftermath of the Title IX fallout, but he doesn't really do much for me as either a tactician or a program leader. As a leader of men? Sure, but you can find lots of rah-rah guys who are better at both of the aforementioned areas of running a program.

Plus, his whole attitude and handling of the Sorsby situation was a disaster. To me, that told me everything we needed to know about him. If you think Tech got raked over the coals, imagine if Baylor had pulled that BS.

If Riley goes 8-4 again there might a mutual parting. He takes another job without USC makes a new hire. No buyouts for anyone. Again, this is all hypothetical but if he has middling year and Baylor ends up looking for a coach I think his name definitely comes up.

I was referring to James Blanchard as their GM. He is the one that finds the studs. Sure they have deep pockets but he could definitely find kids we can afford that would want to come to Waco.

I doubt there is any scenario where there is a "mutual parting of ways" that does not involve USC being paid this money or at least half of it, we don't have half of it sitting around either.

I would guess Cody Campbell is already just waiting for such a scenario to stab quickly stab McGuire in the back and take his old team mate.

However this whole discussion is pointless and irrelevant as if now

I have spoken personally with a former player of his, not at Baylor btw, who did t even realize he was saying very unflattering things about him regarding rules etc. He thought he was saying great things about him. This conversation occurred a few months before the whole Soresby episode. Anyway I suspect Rhoades had some idea about this back in the day and inexperience at this level at the time was not the only misgiving. That is what I was thinking during this conversation.

I would suggest Navy's Newberry...

The Boise State coach just signed a contract extension that lasts until 2030. We need to spend the money on players, not for buyouts.

Which brings up the other part...

Stop thinking about having "Texas roots" etc

The game has changed. You are paying players who will come and go every year, not hoping some high school coach guides a kid to your program.

IF there is a coach search for next season, I think at this point the best idea is a very successful head coach with a real spark from a program where he will be looking for a step up. Just better from a financial standpoint. Money-whipping for a big name guy fails a lot of times, and usually comes with baggage. Don't get in that trap and have a monstrous grave to dig out of. We don't have the endless booster funds that somebody like A&M does.

Second choice would be if the wheels really fall off 2/3 the way through the season, let Klanderman have a shot and finishing out and see how the team responds to his leadership.

I'm not betting on either of those eventualities..

That is the one situation where I'd be in favor of going ahead and firing Aranda early. If we are 3-3 at the mid-way point, I'd be good with seeing how Klanderman could do as a head coach. That would be a reason for an early firing rather than just the "let's fire him now" nonsense. That would give us an idea of whether it might be worth giving him a shot. Of course, that would almost certainly mean replacing Spavital on offense.

That's pretty much even the Sicem staff's take. If we are 3-3, just fire Aranda immediately and make the coaching vacancy obvious for everybody. There's barely any hope of salvaging the season at 3-3 with our schedule, and Aranda's tenure has virtually become unsalvageable already.

There is essentially zero chance Klanderman will be head coach. We just got done with seven years with a nice guy that was thought of as one of the top defensive coordinators in the country. Klanderman isn't even thought of in top ten, but even if he was I doubt we would repeat this pattern. As others have said the new guy will almost certainly be a contrast. Probably offense. Probably young. Probably head coach. Think ok st guy

Very small chance, I agree. But of the current coordinators, Klanderman seems like the better contrast to the current head coach. There is certainly an apparent contrast between this years defense and the last few years after he took it over.

"Blue hairs" aren't Baylor's problem and haven't been since the cataclysmic shift from a purely teaching institution to an R1/research model. Along with Texas Baptist influence that change got rid of the old Baylor and the "blue hair" factional influence. For better or for worse. And probably both.

Navy just put on a masterclass in how not to put away a game. Multiple fumbles, penalties, poor clock management, and a general lack or urgency when trailing in the final 4 minutes.

Granted, they were playing with their backup QB, but not an inspiring performance against a bad UAB team. Newberry didn't do himself any favors tonight.

I couldn't care less whether Aranda is fired tomorrow night or at the end of the season, but firing him early doesn't make our job any more attractive whether it's week 5 or week 12. We'll have about the same pool of candidates interested in our job regardless of the extreme. Just ask Arkansas, who thought firing Pittman in week 5 last year was gonna magically make their job more attractive and then they sat and watched as no one wanted it until they got all the way down to Silverfield.

Now, if the ADs premise is that someone on the current coaching staff is worthy of a look at the job, then maybe it accomplishes something in terms of giving that person a tryout. But a good AD already has an idea of which guys he might be interested in and which guys are actually interested in our job.

Traylor hits so many boxes. Tough teams. Hates to lose. Knows the state as well as anyone. Has been a coach developer. So many players NIL taken from him. Main drawback is he can be whiny. Deep Christian.

Eck is likely the best candidate. He is a great coach. Runs offenses and defenses that are so unorthodox that he can recruit his players on the OL DL. Kind of a Mike Leach type of personality. But I can't see Baylor hiring a figurehead who is 350 lbs and will randomly curse during press conferences.
