Does the ACU band play instruments or do they just hum?

One question I always had of the Church of Christ folks. They don't allow any sort of musical instruments. They just sing a capella. However, they play a pitch pipe to get them all in the same key to sing.

If a pitch pipe is an instrument that makes a musical tone, doesn't that qualify it to be an instrument of music?

I always saw that as just a little bit hypocritical.

That and the fact they thought everybody was going to Hell except them.

Go Bears! Beat the Campbellites. Might be one of the only two games we win.

I went to undergraduate school at ACU in the 60's. Most all my classmates were raised in the C of C. They went to one of the larger Churches of Christ in town on Sundays and the truly religious ones went on Wed. Nights as well. None of the churches were instrumental. We had a Bible Dept because a Divinity or Theological School would make us like "the denominations." Track was the big sport on campus. And most everyone was from Texas and played 42. To answer your question, even then our band played instruments...the Acapella Only rule only applied to church music.

That was then. This is now.

Nowadays, none of our FB coaches are C of C. More students attend the Baptist megacurch in Abilene than a C of C, but if they wanted to attend The biggest C of C in town, they would have the option of an instrumental service. We have a Grad School of Theology on campus. We are still very much committed to remaining a Christian university, but far less committed to traditional C of C beliefs. Most of those at ACU these days would even speak to their Baptist friends at the liquor store.

And the most dramatic changes of all, track is no longer the dominant sport and it's really hard to find anyone who knows how to play 42.

ACU coaches know Baylor is favored by 37 points. Instead of posting the betting line on the bulletin board, when ACU players make a mistake in practice they are required to drop and do 37 push ups.

Those sort of incentives won't compensate for the Bears superior size and athleticism, but you can expect spirited opposition.

Baylor is aware that ACU now has a QB who can throw. He played HS ball in FW so they know about him.

That means that ACu's scheme last year (with the option/run first approach) is likely out the window. They will have a new scheme this year to take advantage of an obvious upgrade in talent at QB.

He may not be the second coming of Loyal Proffet but he has a big arm and can throw the ball. And he can score with his arm.

Baylor knows this much.

Nah I'm just telling you our OL is still going to be pretty bad.

Rhule totally failed in that department.

How exactly has Rhule failed in that department? He's brought in two Division I transfers, a JUCO transfer and has made the O-line a massive point of emphasis in his first three recruiting classes. Other than become a miracle healer or inherit a better situation up front, I'm not sure what he could have done much differently or better.

Unfortunately, we're still super young and inexperienced behind our ones. But our depth and overall talent level is light years better than it was this time last year.

My favorites were 3-time sprint gold-medalist Bobby Morrow and pole vaulter Billy Olson.

I think Olson got cheated out of his gold medal by so-called President Jimmy Carter who decided to boycott the 1980 Olympics in Moscow. He held like 17 world records though. Only one of the reasons Carter is the second worst president ever. Carter gives thanks daily for Obama's presidency that keeps him from being the worst.

Go Bears. Don't lose to ACC!

This Baylor team does what the 2017 team could not do. The Mighty Matt Rhule led Baylor Bears put together a fast and furious 4th quarter comeback and the Bears prevail 48-45. Bears win!!!! Bears win!!!! I just hope and pray that the McLane Security people are able to keep the overflow, sellout crowd off of the field and protect the goal posts!

First, as has already been pointed out, most of our projected starters didn't play in the spring game.

Second, no one's suggesting that our line depth is where it needs to be currently. But that has a lot more to do with the situation Rhule inherited than how he's responded to it. He's done as much to address this weakness through recruiting as could be reasonably expected.

So again I ask, how has Rhule failed in this department? Unless you're holding him accountable for the lack of line depth he inherited, I don't understand how he can be blamed for the state of our current line.

He had basically a month to recruit that 2017 class?? And he still got a guard from the national champions to come sit a year to play for us this year. Rhule is responsible for a lot of the ****ty record last year for sure, but this definitely isn't one of them.

I gave him a one year pass, but no excuses this year. A bad OL is Rhule's fault.

This is an absurd take given the situation he stepped into up front. That last sentence will be true in years three, four and five, once the guys he's recruited are redshirt sophomores and juniors. But you don't go from playing converted tight ends and true freshman to having a strong offensive line in one year.

I would expect this group to be better, certainly. And I think that's a fair expectation to hold this team and staff to. But this line is very much a work in progress, and we're still a year away from seeing the offensive line that Rhule recruited and developed. At that point, you will get a far more accurate gauge of this staff's ability to evaluate and develop line talent.
