1974 Miracle on the Brazos. Darrell Royal inserts Earl Campbell on defense with UT leading 24-7 after Baylor (Johnny Green...somebody help me) blocks a punt on UT's first drive of the second half.
Baylor drives inside the 5. On 4th down Earl jumps offside on a play Baylor is stopped.
One more play and Grant goes for the TD instead of the field goal.
Neal rolls right and barely finds the end zone.
24-14 becomes 34-24 and there actually is a Miracle on The Brazos.
Nothing else compares.
I can still see that play and vividly remember holding my breath hoping Jeffrey would make it over the goal line before the UT pursuit caught him. You're right, he just barely got in before going out of bounds and the rest of that miracle come back is history.
As far as the
most gutsy play call, it's hard to disagree with GuyMo's decision to go for it all with the 2 point conversion play in OT against A&M in '04, especially given how long it had been since we had beaten them, with seemingly every break in the world constantly going their way in multiple close games over a miserable 19 year stretch - until then.
