I didn't even know it was gone until I saw a Trib business column headline stating a deal is about to close on the site. It was behind a pay wall so I don't know details of that, if the column even mentioned what might be going in there.
Because if there's one thing we need more than Mexican restaurants it's another Chinese food trough buffet around here....ccgutierrez said:
Don Carlos hasn't closed yet. According to the article, Don Carlos is preparing to leave the building and have an Asian dining concept replace it apparently.
When he said that I was hoping that was not the plan for the building but it probably is what was meant by he "Asian dining concept" term in the Trib.whitetrash said:Because if there's one thing we need more than Mexican restaurants it's another Chinese food trough buffet around here....ccgutierrez said:

It would be nice to have one decent Chinese place in the metro area, but that may be a dream for a different decade.

I would love to have at least something like k1, the bloom in Belton here in Waco.
My theory has been that Pluckers would KILL IT there, but BWW may have a wing non-compete for the shopping center...Yogi said:
Turns out Don Carlos may relocate, which begs ths question, "What's going on with the old Twin Peaks/ Scotty's Brewbluse/ Louisiana Crab Shack building?".
It is sitting vacant, great loacation with easy access. Surely the fact there was a gunfight there 10 years agp doesn't distract from the great location/ building therw is now.
Somebody ought to be able to pick up that buildimg on the cheap.
Anyone want to go in on Waco's newest biker bar? Why not just play the history of the place now that a decade has passed? Bikers will still love it and just pay off the county officials and ecerything else is forgotten.
They might, but Panera, Newks and La Madeleine all co-exist out there. And it's probably close to a half mile from BWW to Don Carlos.Bear Doc said:My theory has been that Pluckers would KILL IT there, but BWW may have a wing non-compete for the shopping center...Yogi said:

I'd like to see Dave and Buster's give it a try. I believe they are opening their Killeen location in July, so they've at least dipped their feet into the Centroplex.
everything I've been told by commercial real estate agents in the area about pluckers, pappas and other national chains is that the alcohol sales numbers for Waco don't support the investment for them to come.Yogi said:Agreed, but I think the Plucker's owners are averse to Baylor University, and so, Waco, Texas, as well.Bear Doc said:My theory has been that Pluckers would KILL IT there, but BWW may have a wing non-compete for the shopping center...Yogi said:

As for dave and busters, how well does main event do in Waco? I'm not a fan of main event and much prefer D&B but not sure Waco could support both
I find that hard to believe. 30 years ago? Probably. Now? I see no reason to think Wacoans don't drink as much per capita as most other places.sipembeers said:everything I've been told by commercial real estate agents in the area about pluckers, pappas and other national chains is that the alcohol sales numbers for Waco don't support the investment for them to come.Yogi said:Agreed, but I think the Plucker's owners are averse to Baylor University, and so, Waco, Texas, as well.Bear Doc said:My theory has been that Pluckers would KILL IT there, but BWW may have a wing non-compete for the shopping center...Yogi said:

I would tend to agree with your statement, but would add that Waco, in general, is still a very price-conscious market -- not just for entertainment such as food and drink, but also for services.Quote:

For example, I imagine a 'Nickel Beer Night' promotion would kill it here, whereas it might be hard to sell enough folks on a $19 'Cadillac' margarita to really stoke gross alcohol receipts.
Sure, those pricier mixed drinks can work in DFW and Austin, and Waco certainly has a group of folks who don't mind their bar tab being as much or more than their food tab, but I just don't think that there are enough of those folks here, yet.

FWIW, I've been to one 'Nickel Beer Night' in my life, and it was many, many years ago in Austin. If you want a real laugh, go read about what happened when the Cleveland Indians baseball team had a 10 Cent Beer night promotion -- they had an honest-to-goodness riot break out.

I'm about 99.999% sure that is just trolling on purpose or repeating without critical evaluation an urban legend. One it flies in the face of the evidence with all of the new restaurant developments that have come to Waco since the mid 90s but really it was happening even before then. Lol the Baylor Club located on Baylor property sells alcohol and I'm sure quite a lot and their customers are primarily Baylor related.
It may be that the population has not hit the mark yet for Pappas etc. Chains do have a population base of a metro area under which they don't want to be located but casting it as it is hard to sell drinks in Waco is absurd.
as someone who lives in dfw, I'd kill for the "high prices" in wacoRobert Wilson said:Eleven-League Grant said:I would tend to agree with your statement, but would add that Waco, in general, is still a very price-conscious market -- not just for entertainment such as food and drink, but also for services.Quote:

Eh, that's a different point. But even at that, have you been to Opal's? It's absolutely packed, all the time, and I can't get out of there for less than $300.
There was a time that you could not stay open in Waco if you could not feed somebody for 10 bucks. That time has passed.

Strange move to not do something in business that would be profitable because of…. Dislike of a rival fanbase?
If all decisions were made like that, there wouldn't be many profitable businesses at all.
