"I am looking for a fresh start," Cryer said. "My time at Baylor has been a lot of ups and downs. I feel like it is time for me to move on personally and I am just looking for a great fit that will let me play both guard positions."

I do not want to play point guard full time, but while I was in Waco I was not able to play point guard at all," Cryer said. "I am looking to see what school will let me play some time at point guard. I realize I am lethal off the ball and I do not want to take that out of my game because I know it is one of my strengths that can help a team win. I know to get to that next level, I will have to be able to showcase what I can do on the ball."

Of course, I am in the draft and after I do the workouts, I will not know if I will stay in or come back to school," Cryer said. "Once I figure that out, I will for sure have to pick. Right now I am focused on narrowing down the schools that I actually have a chance of going to. I do not want to waste a program's time and I do not want to waste my time as well. If it makes sense then it makes sense."

I understand why Cryer would want to play some point. That's his only path to the NBA. But I also understand why we didn't let him. I don't think he has the necessary skill set.

i wonder if k-state is too much like baylor for him to be interested in joining tang? he would certainly fill a need up here at either guard position with markquis and desi both gone.

Cryer is not a point guard, and Tang probably knows that better than most.

Any team promising him minutes at that position had better prepare themselves to be frustrated.

Cryer's comments seem straightforward and show he has a mature awareness. Kudos to him for that.

Whether others think he can succeed as a point guard or not, he believes in his own potential. That's a necessary first step for anyone who wants to become better.

He must have had conversations about transitioning to PG the way Flagler did. Our staff probably balked at the idea which is why he entered the portal. I understand and respect his decision.

When I hear that he is not getting an increase in NIL , I will buy his explination

Grimes will be our PG next year IMO

Bingo, he may have multiple reasons for entering the portal. Guarantee NIL is at the forefront

I don't get what's hard to buy. Cryer is like 6-1. He has no hope whatsoever of playing in the NBA as a 6-1 shooting guard. He has slightly more hope as a 6-1 player who can also play point.

This is all about carving out a pro future, not maximizing one-year NIL earnings. If he can do both, great. But he's got to prove that his game translates to the professional ranks.

Like any thing in life, there can be multiple explanations which don't have to be mutually exclusive. One aspect of employment is salary, so people leave for higher-paying jobs all the time. Another reason people leave for other jobs are for better advancement opportunities or better opportunities to develop skills. All of these can be valid reasons as to why someone would leave one job for another job.

I agree. But Cryer has one year left to basically set his future course in basketball. I don't see any reason to doubt his stated reasons for transferring, which make perfect sense from career perspective.

I am not doubting his stated reason for transferring, which I just acknowledged. A person can have multiple factors and reasons for their career choices.

Lord...NIL is the new 'boogeyman' word now .

When Bridges transferred here from West Virginia I went to their boards.. besides the vulgar things said the majority opinion we got him was because of all our Texas oil money and NIL.

Now when we lose someone it's NIL.

Drew is one of the top college coaches out there today. Baylor has a top rated program and produced a number of NBA front court players over the last few years. So as a player, you want to leave this situation ?? I agree he is not likely an NBA player, European league likely. In the NBA, you have to play defense, maybe he should concentrate on that first. If he had skills at point, don't you think Drew would have recognized it and given him a shot ? He spends enormous amounts of time with these guys and understands what they can and cannot do.
These young guys always see themselves as NBA talent, even when the numbers tell them that VERY few actually make it. NIL money for many will be the largest payday from basketball they ever get.

This. Hard to grasp for some that there are good players who give it their all at Baylor that just want to move on and have a new start somewhere else.

We have not had a ton of success producing NBA guards. Most of our best never even got a sniff and the two best from our national championship team are currently fighting for their NBA lives.

Cryer needs to prove he can play point guard to have any hope whatsoever of playing in the NBA. We (smartly IMO) weren't going to give him that opportunity. There's no nefarious plan here. Cryer's goals and ours for him just don't align anymore, and that's OK.

If LJ is gonna be a starting PG, please let him go to another Big 12 school. All we'd have to do is press and the opponent would have difficultly getting the ball up the court. He dribbles too high, throws lazy passes, constantly moves to one side and was relatively easy to defend when he tried to create.

LJ Cryer is an EXCEPTIONAL three point shooter, as good as any I've seen if he has his feet set. He is not a PG. But it is his dream, not mine, so I hope he goes somewhere he feels will give him the shot to prove what he believes he has. Wish nothing but the best for him.

Which is why Uh being one of the front runners is very very strange. He doesn't fit their grinding D at all and doesn't seem like a fit with a very hard old school coaching style. Will be interesting

Hope not but if it has to happen lets get Grimes and Walter to lock him down
Crawfoso1973
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I agree. The staff must be confident in what they have with Miro and Grimes running the PG position, were willing to let Cryer and Bonner walk. Wouldn't be surpised if we already had someone from the portal coming in as well. Our offense is always best when we have multiple guys who can play on or off the ball.

I fear that coaches recruiting him will tell him what he wants to hear about playing time at point guard. But,when the season gears up he will find himself playing more and more as the shooting guard(as the coach intended from the beginning).Am I too cynical?

He'll get a shot at point IMO. But that opportunity will only last as long as his play warrants -- unless he ends up playing for a bad team.

No, you aren't. Happens quite a bit. Unless he goes to a team that isn't that good, they would not give him consistent run at pg after early Ooc. Would expect token playing time early but not big minutes spelling the pg for a winning program.

Now if the program is chosen is one of the weaker teams on those lists.. I could see playing good minutes at point.

Nebraska and LSU. And then Mississippi State and Clemson are pretty mediocre.

Not "bad" but just one of the "weaker" teams listed. A Nebraska, Miss St, Clemson, or LSU would be a program that he might have more run at the point.

Im surprised Miami is not listed. That would be a better fit than almost any of the other teams listed and probably more than any other program in the country that I could think of. Only system more open for guards than Bu and they have a history of several hybrid scoring guards in a free flowing system. Could handle the ball some there and they do not play a hard style of defense over the full season that would grind you out.

4 Big 12 teams in that list! Very interesting.
5 if Gonzaga joins.
