Missi and Josh are manning the 5 with EJ getting some minutes sprinkled in. Lohner doesn't get minutes at the 5 so will not compete with Josh for minutes. Lohner is locked into an 8-12 minute role behind Bridges.

The key for him is not trying to do too much. Last year he was an automatic turnover every time he touched the ball. This year he gets the ball out of his hands immediately and runs to the 3 point line. That stroke looks confident. On defense he doesn't look quite as lost, either. As long as he isn't on an island trying to defend the perimeter he won't hurt us too much defensively.

My two main knocks in him are

1) he's like super hyper and needs to slow down to some degree when he has the ball, get some semblance of finesse even if it's super limited and

2) he missed way too many bunnies which is largely a function of 1

Does anyone else see Lohner's role as somewhat comparable to Mark Vital's? It seems to me that sometimes he thrives as a ball hawk or glue guy the way Vital did. I'm not saying he has the same level of talent or will ever be another Mark Vital. (I don't think anyone could ever be as good as Mark was.)

No, the only thing Lohner has in common with Vital is he's a decent rebounder. Honestly the comp is insulting to Vital who was one of the best defensive players in the history of college basketball. Lohner does not have the basketball IQ, instincts, or anticipation to compare to Vital. Lohner does not possess the lateral movement to be able to guard the perimeter which Vital was elite at doing. Lohner is more of a fake hustle guy (running around fast and jumping high, diving after loose balls and gambling for steals) which makes him look like a better defender than what he is.

Yes. Being objective about a player does not equate to bashing them.

Agree on the leadership (positive bench and locker room presence) and rebounding part. That's it though. And that's ok, comparing to Vital is unfair to Lohner.

He doesn't really have a good feel for the game and it still hasn't fully slowed down for him. He is a good jump and straight line athlete but doesn't have great fluidity or feet. A little stiff.

Think he has improved and can contribute. It a solid rebounder, good leaper, and a hustle player. Stick to what he does well and it will help the team. I think he has done well this year and should be in the rotation

In this regard Lohner reminds me a lot of Bonner last year. A lot of people viewed Bonner as a good defender because he looked the part and he was active / tried hard. He gambled for steals and sometimes it worked and looked good on highlight videos but more often than not it lead to easy buckets for the other team. Bonner struggled with the fundamentals of defense like staying in front of who he was guarding. Our perimeter D was awful last year and Bonner didn't help much. Bonner tried but just wasn't very good at basketball. I view Lohner in the same way. That said, Lohner is much improved and can help us this year if he stays within his limited niche role and doesn't try to do to much.

Bonner was a flawed player and was not near the caliber of the guys we brought in to replace him. Nunn, Walter, Dennis, Grimes etc. It is not personal or an indictment on his effort and the year he gave us.

I didn't play basketball in college but I know hoop. Lohner and Bonner are not bad basketball players relative to the general population or if they played in a smaller conference. For a team with national title aspirations, however, they are limited role players and are okay for depth if they stay within their niche as specialists in a limited role. Anything beyond that will expose their flaws, as we saw last season when Bonner was thrust into a more prominent role due to injury. This discussion began when a poster compared Lohner to Vital who was one of the greatest defensive playes in the history of college basketball. Since this is a message board, I disagreed with the comparison. No one needs to be upset. Carry on....
