Look around at the many long faces at Foster scraping the edges of their skimpy cheese portions. The foodservice Queso Baylor uses costs $9 for a 106 ounce can which works out to 8.5 cents an ounce. While you are unable to comprehend who eats this food, BU knows they can charge $8 and get away with it. 2 oz tortilla chips and 1oz Queso = $8. That's a higher per pound price than Franklin's brisket $42.66 per pound of the nacho offering Vs $34.00 per pound for Franklin brisket (market price as of 2/6/24. I don't know how much Baylor is paying for the chips, but knowing a 2oz bag of plain tortilla chips at dollar tree costs $1.25 retail, one can surmise worst case scenario it's costing BU concessions $1.25 for chips plus 8.5 cents for Queso, plus whatever the flimsy paper tray they are served in. Let's assume the paper tray costs 10 cents each and the thimble sized Queso container cost of 5 cents. that yields Baylor a $1.25 + .085 + .10 + .05 = $1.49 rounded up cost for this nacho product yielding a profit of $6.51. $25,000 fine divided by $6.51 is 3,840 nacho product servings. Now clearly you aren't ordering these nachos or any of the other concession products, but based on the amount of trash I see after both basketball and football events , I conclude it's thousands of orders of nachos per event. Given the low cost of the Queso to BU do you think they could splurge and fill the 2oz container to the brim ? Would this possibly boost customer satisfaction in the nacho concession selection? I think it would. More nacho servings sold would help to quickly pay back this $25,000 fine, Maybe BU marketing could start a campaign called "Nacho Fine Mack!!", a play on words to suggest "Not your fine Mack". I can envision the public address getting enthusiastically behind such a catchy promotion, so much so that those on the side lines might be willing to purchase said nachos just to support this worthy cause. Selfishly bringing attention to the skimpy cheese ration this campaign might lead to the availability of a jumbo cheese sauce option. After paying $8 and receiving only 1 oz nacho sauce I'd be happy to pay (fill in the blank) for an ample 4 oz serving of cheese sauce to round out the chips portion. Given that the Jumbo Shrimpers in the suites receive unlimited access to concession amenities, I would gladly pay a premium for an extra nacho sauce portion. This said, this add on sale could make quick work of paying off the $25,000 fine. I think most Baylor partisans and visiting guests are already making these nacho purchases but how many more would pay $3.00 for a 4 oz cheese add on ? Although you can't get your brain around it, I bet at least 500 would pay the extra $3 for an extra 4oz cheese? Those 4 ounces plus an enhanced container size cost being approximately 4x.085 + .09 container = 43 cents cost yields $2.57 !!!! For the cheese add on in profit x 500 per game is an extra $1,285 per game. To borrow words from Ron Burgundy, "that escalated quickly" is just the point of "Nacho Fine Mack", to quickly pay off the $25,000 by selling as many of the improved nacho portion size as possible. My numbers in terms of cost to BU may be slightly inflated in terms of the tortilla product but all that means is less orders of nachos would need to be sold to cover the Big 12 fine.

Rhoades was very unprofessional in the way he handled this matter. He has avenues to fix problems that others do not have. He should avail himself of those opportunities in a professional way. I hope his behavior does not hurt the actual solving of the problem.

In addition, I think it would not be out of order for the school to also express to him its displeasure in the way he behaved after the game.

An Athletic director should not be constantly in from of the camera. His job is administrative. It is time for him to learn that lesson and remove himself from the sidelines and get behind the scenes where administrators belong.
Mack has made enough decisions to cause fans to question him. This was not one of them. He needed to address it.

If the league doesn't upgrade the officiating--and that includes addition by subtraction---it will continue to see more responses like Sampson's. Borders on dangerous due to the increasing #'s of OOC "fans".

Or just economics in general.

I beg to differ, BU could fill the Queso vessel to the brim and give a patron the full 2 ounces that the container holds. In fact most other venues in the Big 12 serve Rico's brand nacho cheese sauce in a sealed 4oz container. Do you think Baylor is making exponentially more money by not giving a 2 oz Queso portion ? You think by saving 8,5 cents per ounce BU concessions is getting ahead ? I'm actually willing to bet Baylor would sell more nachos if the Queso portion was more ample thus creating more sales. Speaking of which have you priced the ketchup and mustard offered "free" in pumps at both venues. Those condiments also cost BU concessions and they are about 50% the cost of the Queso. Maybe you should write BU concessions and suggest they remove those condiment pumps and further increase profits by offering the ketchup and mustard in a more miserly manner? I'd like to see BU double down and ration out the ketchup and mustard in the same skimpy fashion they distribute the Queso and see how that plays out.

Gee willikers I had Mark Dunn at Baylor. He always used the slogan "Don't skimp on the cheese!"
But now that I have been schooled and rightly so on Economics 101, how much further could Baylor push the skimpy cheese portioning and get away with it? You think BU could switch to a 1oz Queso vessel and half fill it, adding an extra 4.25 cents to their bottom line? By serving a half ounce Queso instead of 1 ounce? It would basically be the same visual, a half filled Queso cup. Also I have a hunch there would be a material savings experienced by using less plastic for the smaller sauce container ? What if Baylor saved an extra penny using the smaller container coupled with the additional 4.25 cents? The result would be 5.25 cents extra profit at the point of sale. How about BU just eliminate the plastic cup all together and possibly use a small spatula to smear some Queso sauce onto the paper boat ? How many grams of cheese sauce are in a smear? Given 14 grams is half an ounce, maybe a smear is 5 grams? That's what BU should do in pursuit of Economics is to eliminate the Queso container and replace with with a smear of sauce. This would still meet the core values of the "Nacho Fine Mack" campaign by further increasing concession profits. I also think BU could form a blue ribbon committee and brainstorm for ideas using the slogan "Nacho Smear" as a new concession item. I've always enjoyed the verbiage BU marketing uses to describe their concession items as "novelties", in select parts of that assortment. "Nacho Smear" has a novelty connotation and I believe there might be enough people who would for it. I can see it in lights and on billboards now "Nacho Fine Night….featuring Nacho Smear", it's kinda catchy don't you think? What if the Baylor line had shirts and banners with "Fear the Smear!!" ? Possibilities are endless.

"On this occasion, the required discipline was not exercised. Mack Rhoades is one of the very best athletics administrators in the nation, and I am grateful for the manner in which he handled this process."

The end of the press release is just bad. I assume whoever wrote this for BY is saying they appreciate how Mack has handled the fine process. I on the other hand read it and think if you are grateful for how he has handled it why are you fining him. Poorly worded at best.

First of all, it's almost certain not the case that Baylor makes the decisions about size of portions or prices charged. The concessions are under contract and simply pays Baylor a set fee periodically (annually, monthly, per game, whatever).

Second, all of those cost and price decisions are determined by basic economics: the laws of supply & demand. The crowd inside an arena or stadium (or any other closed venue such as Six Flags, an airport, etc) is going to have an enhanced demand, hence the higher prices. Baylor probably charges a premium for those vendors because their overhead is so high and their opportunities to recover this costs are limited. Supply is reduced. For football it's only 6-7 games a year usually and for MBB or WBB it might be double that (but each event is a little more than half the duration).

There probably is some price gauging going on in some of those circumstances, especially airports, but they are owned by the government (city or state) so no one should be surprised if they are overcharged. It's almost ALWAYS the case when the government provides something, we pay more & get less. If that's not a rule of economics it should be.

Finally, if anyone really expects anything to change then that person needs to tell the people who actually make those decisions. In case of nachos that would be the vendor. If enough people say something, it could change. But don't be surprised if they increase the price as a result. More likely, they probably will ignore the request or at most provide some excuse as to why it's impossible or not cost effective. Be careful what you ask for, you might get it.

Most people don't care and are willing to pay the inflated price as demonstrated by the current volume of sales. The most certain way to change things is for enough people to stop buying them and everyone of them to say why. Reduced sales could force a change because it's in their interest to do so.

Ah !! So close in guessing !! it was "Cravens", which was the name of the peanut magnate supplier at Baylor's old Ferrel Field, and at the Cotton Bowl at Fair Park. It was definitely concessions related though. Dutch Schroeder and I spent many a baseball afternoon shelling some Cravens and telling yarns of Baylor yore.
And as far as complaining goes, I have already written letters regarding the miserly nacho cheese portions and have received mundane, uninformative replies. Maybe I should take the Pail Rosa approach with my plight.
