How big of an impact was it?

What works?

What needs to be better?

(we've done tiny and camera angles ad nauseam)

BYU's opposition shoots second half free throws into a sea of optical illusions. The band and students need to add that. Cupcakes don't create bad shots.

When Foster was opened in January, it was a project that wasn't going to be completed until the summer. The upper deck seats have no bathroom facilities or concession stands. Are any planned to be installed by the end of the summer? I know the practice facilities will be finished this summer. Wouldn't be surprised if the Robinson Towers are not going to be torn down for a while.

I know the camera angle has been beat to death but "we are working on it" from Mack doesn't give me much confidence.

Will you fix this exceptionally poor error in judgement? Yes or No?

But live games here are special. Exceeded my high expectations.

Actually, I have gotten used to seeing the games on TV and don't even think about it any longer. However, I would suspect that to "fix" the camera angles probably involves some "reconstruction / repositioning" that you just cannot do when you have games going on basically every week. Whatever will be / can be done is probably only going to be able to occur in the off season.

I was going to say the same thing. Watching the game on tv last night, I didn't even think about the camera angle. It was a little different at first, but I think I've gotten used to it.

Have two daughters at Baylor. Houston game was our first Foster experience. The facility is fantastic. Reminds me of the feel of Cowboy Stadium - feels very "open air" with great lighting, acoustics and atmosphere.
I know there are still some pieces to finish - but we loved everything about it.

Regarding the camera angle, you'd think they could position a remote control camera down lower. I have to admit that I'm now used to it - watching games on TV - but they should find a solution for a lower angle as it will certainly enhance the production further.

Tone down some of the artificial noise.

Show a decibel meter on the screens during opponent's free throws and at other key times.

Spectators will see the decibel meter as a challenge to get louder.

I think the only restrooms on the upper level are single stall ADA ones. Don't think they have the ability to add any in the current configuration.

For the most part, I've gotten accustomed to it, but not everything is a homerun improvement over Ferrell. The self-serve concessions move more efficiently, but the hotdogs sitting out under a heatlamp rather than in a warming drawer are far more likely to be dried out and crusty, and the popcorn usually tastes like it has aged a minimum of 48-72 hours before serving.

Maybe by next season more people will have learned how to use the automated drink machines. As long as the line isn't too long, you can get your ice before scanning the code to start the timer, because in the 20 seconds you are given, it fills up with foam in about 10 seconds, then takes 6-7 seconds for the foam to go down, leaving you with 2-3 seconds to fill up your cup to somewhere near the top.*****

But here's my biggest gripe:

At FC you had the scoreboard and video in the middle over the court, ads above the portals and on the scoreboard, and separate team and player stat boards. Rarely if ever did they supersede the stat boards with advertising. The HD graphics at Foster are much better, but 70-80% of the time the team stats are replaced with ads (and 20-30% of the time so are the player stats). Often I will glance up to check team shooting percentages, rebounds, turnovers, etc. (usually while little is happening on the court, such as walking it up from the backcourt) and instead find nothing but 5 to 10 seconds of ads for Rudy's. Or TFNB. Or Tow King. Or something else that has no connection whatsoever with what's happening on the court. I understand the need to visible ad signage throughout the arena, but not at the expense of providing info pertinent to the game.

*****Note the parallel to our end of half offensive sets discussed in another thread.

Not sure what you're talking about, last time I was there there was no observable place they could even put restrooms right now on the second level. It needs to be addressed.

I haven't been since early in the season but I hope they'll continue to refine the video packages. I thought it was dreadful trying to find the score during free throws of either team.. In general they need to somehow improve the scoreboard experience from the upper deck. seems great from the lower deck, but I felt I had to look away from the action often to see the score or find a clock that wasn't the shot clock. The lack of a dropdown score board really changes the viewing experience.

I also think the student section needs a lesson in how to cheer for basketball, but my complaints with the "bear pit" have been existent for years at this point.

I don't get the gripe about no bathrooms in the upper level. It's a pretty typical walk to the bathrooms and there seem to be enough. It's only 7000 seated capacity, so splitting it up into all kinds of "levels" doesn't make sense. You aren't that far from anything

I don't love the concessions, but they are efficient. From the original plans, I am not sure that the Chik Fil a or Pops stands were even supposed to be there.

I don't love the entrance either because it is asymmetrical with the escalator on one side. I think it looks weird. But again, it gets people in and out efficiently.

Pretty much everything else A, with student section set up and acoustics being A+.

Great energy too.

I shouldn't have to walk through an unfinished stair well (which based on McLane that stair well will never be finished) to get to a bathroom in the upper deck. It is traveling a significant distance to get from the upper deck to the lower deck restrooms or concessions. If they don't want concessions up there, fine but there should be restrooms.

They can't announce they're changing the camera angle definitively, because moving it to where it should have been in the first place involves displacing some ADA seating. You can't just announce you're moving people out of their seats without working it out with the seatholders first.

That said, not thinking about it before the building opened was a stunning lack of planning. Inexcusable, frankly.

There's no ADA on the camera side of the court, but there are jumbo shrimp donors with fancy rolling chair seats who would have to sit closer together if they put a camera there. I figured they might lose 3-4 loge seats to do so.

What do you mean? Too loud? I think the noise (acoustics, crown noise) is great. That place goes from 0 to 100 in half a second.

And yes. If you're expecting a tv experience, stay home. If you want a fan experience, Foster is for you.

The never ending music is what I mean. Call me old or whatever, but its really annoying. I take the kids to the game, they have questions and its almost impossible to converse with the person sitting next to you. Would never complain about crowd noise, thats legit.

I see. Didn't really notice any different from like a Mavs or Stars game. That is just the way games are nowadays I guess.

I could live with the music if it was something new and hip like The Mommas and the Pappas, Jefferson Airplane, you know-something that grooves.

The noise is an advantage. On TV at least, it's comparable to ISU, BYU, WVU, & even Kansas. Drew credited the crowd with helping the team defeat Texas.

It's not very different than what schools do at football games. I've been to several of those over the past decade, including multiple trips to Ft Worth, Austin, & Houston (Rice & Texas Bowl). The difference is that basketball is in a confined space so it's more noticeable and the sound is more focused. But that is deliberate & part of the design.

I noticed that for the music with heavy bass, one can feel it in the seats. It almost seems like the subwoofers are underneath! My only gripe is some of the song selections. But it's not a big deal & partly because I'm not overly fond of must of modern music.
