In the round of 32 last weekend 15 of 16 favorites won their games… except for us of course.

Sweet 16 has started off differently. Yesterday there were upsets in three of the four games.

Underdog NC State has jumped out to an early lead tonight.

Marquette looks so bad.

Basketball's a crazy game. NC State was an average team almost all year until it caught fire in the ACC tournament. Now they're playing as well as anyone not named UConn.

That's a legitimately dangerous team playing really well.

Purdue looks really good. But Gonzaga had been hanging on as long as I've been watching (current lead is largest). If they can avoid too many fouls they might win this one. I would like to see them win it all if Houston doesn't.

Every time Gonzaga makes a run, Purdue answers and separates again. Purdue is playing really well.

The ACC now looking so strong does not bode well for houston tonight.

We'll see. Houston was the only elite team in the Big 12 this year. None of the others were better than Sweet 16 teams to begin with.

NC State just hit a dagger 3. Barring a historic collapse, the Wolfpack are headed to the Elite Eight.

We always over attribute conference strength or weakness based on the tiniest of sample sizes in the tournament.

Would I have liked to see the Big 12 do better? Maybe. On the one hand, it's good validation that the conference is a powerhouse. On the other hand, conference pride is for losers.

Zags with 3 clean looks at 3 on one possession and nothing.

Zags 6 for 18 on the night from 3

My bracket was looking so good up until this S16 got started.

Now it's a dumpster fire.

Wait, I thought conventional wisdom was that we should lose early in the Big 12 tournament because otherwise we would have tired legs and not be ready for the NCAA tournament.

It would be pretty cool if Robert Wright turns out to be like Braden Smith of Purdue. A smallish proto PG who can dribble, dish, move the ball around quickly and shoot purely from both the outside and free throw line if necessary. Smith will never play a second in the NBA but he is a top notch college PG which is all that matters to me with Wright.

Reminds me of a certain Uconn team that wasn't going to make the tournament but then won 5 straight in the big east tourney, got a bid then won the whole damn thing

Houston already has a steal & a score. Repeat with great defense and offense.

Houston 6
Duke 0

Houston is off to a flying start. Up 6-0 and dominating on both ends early.

Duke will find its stride eventually, but Houston couldn't ask for a better start.

If Houston wins, they play NC State on Sunday.

Anyone remember a certain Houston-NC State game a while back?

Duke looks shook by Houston's defense. They're not used to this level of intensity.
bear2be2
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Duke's only buckets are coming on 3s off offensive rebounds. They're staying in it with those shots, but that's likely not sustainable offense.

Uh oh. Shead's down with an apparent ankle injury. If he's injured, Houston's cooked.

Duke is playing much better now than at the beginning & Houston has had done trouble scoring & rebounding.

Duke still hasn't done much offensively. But without Shead, Houston hasn't been able to get into its offense. It's a bunch of iso stuff with Cryer and Sharp.

Their offense is playing terrible. But they are underrated on defense and rebounding. They were locking them up even before the injury

Duke looks better in comparison. You're right: Houston needs Shead.

Houston has not made a single 3 pointer in this game.

Even without Shead, Houston's defensive rotations/help are a thing of beauty to watch. Watching them and us on the defensive end is like watching a different sport.

Shead has been the key to their success all season.

He had been struggling once Shead went down, but that was a huge shot at the half.
