This idiotic generation probably considers him a plumber all while not realizing he's the guy on the freaking NBA logo.

Burn a couch for him West Virginia.

I may have posted about this before, but in 1971-72, the first season after the Rockets relocated from San Diego to Houston, they "barnstormed" by playing a few home games around the state (3 in San Antonio pre-Spurs, 2 in Waco and 1 in El Paso). On Feb. 23, 1972, they played the eventual NBA champion Lakers at HOT Coliseum. Lakers went 69-12 the rest of the season but 0-1 in Waco. It's the only NBA game I ever sat on the front row courtside. Tickets were probably a ridiculous amount, like $10-15 or so.

West poured in 36 in a 115-110 loss (in the pre-3 point shot era).

Awesome story - I had no idea this happened.

I love these boards for anecdotes like this one.

Back in the late 60s/early 70s (I was 9 in Feb 72), NOBODY in the basketball-weak SWC had anyone taller than 6'8". So I was excited to see how gigantic 7'1" Wilt Chamberlain must be. I remember being vaguely disappointed when he didn't seem all that much bigger (although he was by a bit, especially over 5'9" Calvin Murphy).

I was also at that game. I was a 16-year old junior in high school, and I still have the game program. There were a total of seven Naismith Basketball Hall Of Fame members involved in that game. For the Lakers: Jerry West, Wilt Chamberlain, Pat Riley, and Coach Bill Sharman. For the Rockets: Elvin Hayes, Calvin Murphy, and Rudy Tomjanovich.

Whitetrash, I was at that game!!! My good friend and I were freshman basketball players at Howard Payne University in Brownwood. He was a Waco Robinson Rocket, and I think maybe 4 of us freshman basketball players came to see the game and stay in Robinson with his family. Jerry West was my favorite player EVER. In those days, security was lax to say the least. We went down in the court area before the game and were standing within 3 feet of the Lakers when they came on the court for warmups. I got to see Jerry West up close and personal. I must admit though, Wilt Chamberlain made the biggest impression on me. He is the largest human I have ever seen, and still ever seen. I am 6'1" and I felt like I was looking at his bellybutton when he came by.

That's a great memory for me. Thanks for bringing it up. It did happen!!
