Not so much injuries aa defections and what some Okies call 'stubborn recruiting'. Their top recruits from 2 years ago, Dungee and Mulkey, stayed only one year and transferred. Dungee is now the leading scorer at Arkansas and Nancy Mulkey is the second-leading scorer at Rice. Sherri brought in no new post player after Mulkey. Shaina Pellingston, an explosive player from Canada, was Freshman of the Year last season but at some time this year she got in SC'a doghouse and has rarely left the bench. This year's freshmen are very similar players scrappy, high achool guards and forwards, that are struggling to play D1 WBB. Sherri doesn't host a summer camp, so there is no early cultivation of in-state talent. Her coaching staff is an amalgam of old friends and her son Colton who never coached before. Lots of criticism for SC and her $1.2 million salary and cries for change,. Yet, the woman is entrenched at OU until Joe Castelone applies some pressure on changing her staff or demanding marked unprovement on the court, and yet few believe that will truly happen

Meanwhile, the hatred for Baykir and Kim Mulkey on that board is palpable and irrational, with regular screeds about The Witch in Waco and her win-at-all-costs philosophy. A couple of posters recently called Lauren Cost the dirtiest player they had ever seen and they can't believe that officials miss how she pushes opponents around. SMH. Perhaps they have forgotten the play of Courtney Paris, and perhaps the refs that are just a few feet away from Lauren see very well how tough she plays and don't see that as fouling.
Even though my dad was a "Sooner born and bred"- grad of OU, I am shedding no tears at the demise of their WBB program.

The OU board is looking forward to one & done in the tourney and an end to a rather wretched season. Lots of grumbling about Sherri Coale , yet in their guts they know that she isn't going anywhere. This team was short and slow and played leaky defense. There's not much bright hope on the way with their 2019 class, either.
Kinda sad....

And yet they went out to WV and beat them. And took UConn down to the wire Hard to.explain.

Gee, it's not my place or yours to "explain" those two isolated Sooner performances. I do know that Geno said his team was tired after the flight to Norman and that they played without focus. And my suspicion is that WVa was short on players for their game with OU. Either way, those are two bright spots for a program that will end its 19 year NCAA tourney streak this season.

I'm not gonna argue with you, Gee. but by any reasonable standard the 2018-19 OU WBB team is not a very good squad. They are indeed very young, and this gives Sherri an excellent opportunity to demonstrate her coaching acumen to make them a better team next season.

DEPARTURE OF 2 ASSISTANT COACHES

March 12, 2019

"Oklahoma head women's basketball coach Sherri Coale announced the departure of assistant coaches Pam DeCosta and Chad Thrailkill on Tuesday.

DeCosta and Thrailkill indicated they will seek new opportunities away from basketball.

"I want to thank Pam and Chad for their dedicated service to our program. I have been honored to have them play a vital role in our program and they have both been an integral part in our sustained success over the last 23 years," Coale said. "Pam helped lay the foundation for our run of 19 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances by recruiting a program-defining player like Stacey Dales. Chad has been a part of my basketball family for the past 21 seasons at Oklahoma and Norman High and his commitment to our team has helped countless student-athletes succeed in life as well as on the court. Again, I want to express my gratitude for their dedicated effort to our team during their time at OU and I'm truly grateful for their impact. We all wish them the best in their future endeavors."

DeCosta served as an assistant coach with the Sooners from 1996-98 and returned to Norman prior to the 2011-12 season.

"I want to thank Sherri Coale for giving me the opportunity to coach at the University of Oklahoma on two different occasions," DeCosta said. "It has been an honor to see this program be built from the ground up and to have been a part of such a long period of sustained success. I'm grateful for having the chance to work with many great players during my time along with our staff and administration at OU. I look forward to seeking new opportunities outside the game of basketball and retiring from coaching."

Thrailkill joined OU's staff during the 2002-03 season as the director of operations and was elevated to assistant coach before the 2004-05 season.

"I've enjoyed every moment of my 16 seasons at the University of Oklahoma," Thrailkill stated. "I've had the fortune to work with Sherri Coale for over 20 years and my family and I are thankful for the opportunity she has given me to be a part of the Sooner Family. I want to say thank you to all of our players, past and present, for their commitment to our program."

A search will begin immediately to fill both positions."

"The staff news comes one day after former Big 12 freshman of the year Shaina Pellington announced her intention to leave the program."
- Eric Bailey, Tulsa World, 12 Mar 2019

Lots of noise
but the Norman Transcript & Tulsa World basically regurgitated the Oklahoma WBB press release. Sherri Coale's son, Colton Coale, remains on staff. Also remaining on staff is Jan Ross, Sherri's close friend since college. Ross has been battling cancer for several years.

Oklahoma fan forum
tug-of-war for "unnamed sources" listing various "truths" and theories for the departures:
.. One dominant theme from the fans is their concern about Colton as a coach.
.. 2nd fan theme is that input from assistant coaches is not valued.
.. 3rd fan theme is that the "initiator for change" was the AD.
.. 4th fan theme is Sherri's upcoming contract expiration / different possibilities.

"Sherri Coale was extended through 2021.
Coale's yearly salary remained at a guaranteed $1.1 million per year."
- Brady Vardeman, Tulsa World, 22 June 2016

Stay tuned ...

We live 35 miles from the MSU campus in Springfield, MO. While these "Lady Bears" (what they call themselves) are most definitely a Cinderella team, they've kind of come together the last 3 weeks, have no quit, are well coached, and have Jackie Stiles as an assistant coach on the sidelines. Anyone who has followed WBB for a couple of decades or more should know that name, as she was a scoring machine, and led MSU (then Southwest Missouri State) to the final four.
