Why does the program not have momentum, and how is momentum regained? The first hurdle, which appears as tall as Mt Everest, is for BU to get over its risk aversion, aka fear of meaningful change, which isn't coming through the introduction of the Bear Claw at athletics food venues.

Her compensation is reported in Baylor's Form 990. That is public information. The most recent one I could find online is for the year ended May 31, 2024. Part VII (Page 8) lists Nicki's "Reportable compensation from the organization (W2)" as $1,185,132 and her "Estimated amount of her compensation from the organization and related organizations" as $92,224. Hopefully this link works. But of not, I went to ProPublica's website.

When I first looked at this, I compared her to the other Big 12 coaches and her compensation was second (behind Adia Barnes at Arizona). Barnes has since left Arizona of course. But I have not looked at updated numbers for other coaches in our conference since then.

The problem with total reported income is that it doesn't distinguish between guaranteed base salary and non guaranteed bonus amounts.

Would hazard a guess that 1/3 of that total comes from bonuses, camp revenue, etc. which are typically not guaranteed. Baylor is likely on the hook for about $800,000ish if she is terminated without cause. Still a large chunk for a cash starved athletic department. Time to put more needles into your Mack Rhoades voodoo doll.

Higher base and less bonus than expected. But still a significant (if not fully substantial) block of $300,000ish that likely isn't guaranteed. Not a deal maker amount but for a department that is sucking wind a noteworthy amount.

Well we will know if this is or not very soon.

Very frustrating. The eye test…TT just seemed to out do us in every area. I think the stats largely back that up. When we are off, we are WAY off. Same issues keep popping up. How many missed layups, put backs, fumbled passes…yadda yadda. Why do we seem to shrink when the stakes are highest? Baffling. Is it CNC coaching style? System? I like CNC personally…but gotta look her direction cuz the same issues keep popping up. As was stated…we will see the team response.

The main problem I see, and its been here since KM left town, is our teams do not appear fundamentally sound, particularly on offense. We have talent, but make the same mistakes over and over. We are sloppy with our passing, we can't consistently make lay-ups (esp thru contact), we can't inbounds the ball well, etc. Also, I can't explain why some of our players seem to regress instead of progress in their skills. Something is off in the coaching.

We remain really competitive but can't seem to get over the hump. As frustrating as the loss was last night, I'm not sure we immediately need a head coaching change, but as we have an experienced and talented team this year and we can't win a weakened B12....its alarming.

Chicken or Egg situation.

If CNC wants to run a ball screen dominant offense, she must have players who can consistently win the dribble to create.

If CNC wants this year's type players, can't run a ball screen dominant offense.

It is either a roster construction failure or a talent recognition/schematic design failure.

One related item…..any offense at any level regardless of gender will fail when the ball goes 4-5 minutes routinely without touching the paint.

Bad shot selection.
Constantly picking up the dribble in bad locations. Zero awareness to help stranded teammates who poorly pick up their dribble.

With each game it becomes more apparent that Jada Walker's quickness was masking a ton of structural flaws.

By far the most frustrating things this year is lack of ball rotation, lack of post touches, and the fact that when anyone on the permitter has 3 inches of space, they feel they are open enough to shoot a three. If you are going to encourage players to shoot like that, you best have players who are making them at a high clip. If they miss, it's the equiilant of a turnover. Just straight up baffling. Watching the Ole Miss v LSU game right now. Both of those teams have players who appear to want to win. They are hungry, quick, and intense, especially on the defensive end. Starting to think that CNC has survived her career by inheriting talent and letting them just go out and play. The state of the program is becoming more dire with each passing week. Amazing how far the advancement made during the Mulkey era have evaporated. I didn't watch back then, but are we nearing the Hogg quality of teams?

Yes. The team does practice with male team. There have been pictures of this posted. Male practice team also travels with team on extended road trips.

Thanks. I asked in relation to the women's not having improved one iota against full court pressure. Look at the number of BU TOs that happened in the backcourt against Tech. Practice doesn't necessarily make perfect, but surely it makes better.

Are we really comparing SMU Women's Basketball to Baylor Women's Basketball?

Barnes just inherited an absolute dumpster fire of a program (SMU has only made the tournament ONCE in the last 25 years - 2008).

Kinda hard to say we dodged a bullet when she's literally been there one year and is having to basically start from scratch.

I'll say this - You could swap coaches right this minute and I guarantee CNC would be taking L's left and right in Dallas.

Give Barnes our talent, and I think we are a second weekend team. She literally took an undersized point guard and a bunch of role players to the brink of a national title - at a Non-Powerhouse School mind you.

My guess is she wouldn't squander the talent (or resources) we've had these last few years.

I'll give you Joni Taylor at A&M. She has underachieved for quite some time now, although she at least has her team being fairly competitive at the moment (they won at both Tennessee and Ole Miss recently, and gave South Carolina fits until the final 5 minutes of that game - they were down 5 with 6 minutes to go in that one).

We'll see about Molly Miller, but she's managed to compete against us in consecutive seasons, with scrappy, undermanned teams. She might be legit.

Arizona went down hill from that FF appearance. After the FF, they went out in the 2nd round the next two years, went out in the first round after that, and then didn't even make the tournament last year. You don't have to compare Baylor to SMU in WBB. Just look at her record after the natty. Not exactly the trajectory that you want to see in a coach that had just played for a natty, at least I don't. Seems like she squandered a lot that she should have had after a national championship game.

Baylor's just a good team in a JV conference. That doesn't exactly scream success. Not to mention she's 0/2 reaching the S16 while hosting.

Sorry, I have not hyped her up. What I have done is to try to look at things objectively realizing there are factors involved that are beyond our view before I start throwing darts at someone. We will have to disagree on the talent issue. I just don't see it as you do. To me, a player is not overly talented if they can't hit open shots in a meaningful game situation where anything close to normal would result in enough points to win as was the case yesterday. We have had two key players fit that description this year. Talent has got to step up to opportunity.

What we can question is why the talent is not better, and you seem to want to dismiss any factors that come into play that may not be in control of the coaching staff. But since we don't know the specifics involved, neither of us can analyze if and/or how much of a factor that plays in the final outcome.

Barnes had her own program for the four years before the FF appearance. She didn't walk into the ditch that we got thrown into. She made the national championship game for Pete's sake. She then went straight down. The fact that we even were able to tread water should not be discounted. Don't know if you were on the board back then, but there was serious doubt brought up by many posters as to whether or not Baylor would be able to field a scholarship team for the 21-22 season, much less able to keep making the tournament.
