Well many of you were disappointed with our past non-conference schedules. This coming year's schedule should make you happy!

UConn in Waco
@ Stanford
@ South Carolina
ASU @ neutral site (possible Indian Reservation - which not sure how neutral that would be if it's in Arizona)
Tourney in Las Vegas
Lone Star

Are the playing Arizona or ASU? I thought it was ASU which, is the much stronger team of the two.

Hi bowdedg, Thank you so much for the schedule post!

ASU game might be the Talking Stick Resort Arena in downtown Phoenix, Arizona.
The arena is
.. connected to the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community
.. the host to the WNBA Phoenix Mercury and the NBA Phoenix Suns teams
.. approximately 10 miles from Arizona State's main campus (located in the Phoenix suburb of Tempe)

Traditionally, Arizona State Sun Devils host an annual non-conference tournament called the ASU Classic. The tournament has been held in Tempe during previous seasons.

Actually I wasn't disappointed with last year's schedule PRIOR to the season. Having UCLA, Stanford, and Kentucky, based on past year's standings didn't look all that weak. We almost always (in recent times) had several "name" schools. No way to have known Stanford, at least in that part of the season would be a blowout and that Kentucky was going to be so weak this past year.

With their losses, who's to say South Carolina is not going to be next year's Kentucky. Don't know about ASU. I thought I heard Stanford was losing some and could be weaker, but that might not be true.

IMO, what hurt this year was how crappy the Big XII turned out to be. This coming year is probably not going to be all that much better, if not worse than last year. Not too many years ago, the Big XII was plenty enough without having to play a UConn-like non-conf to get our RPI up toward the top. That has changed. We won't know how "good" of a non-con we will have until after the season is over next year. The only thing I see for sure is that we will have more experience in more hostile environments prior to hitting the NCAA tournament.

And, even in the listed non-con, only ONE of those games is at the FC. So, if you miss the UConn game you may need to get ready to see plenty of sisters of the poor from your FC seats.

my wish list

add A&M every year, home and home. Rivalry.
keep South Carolina on the schedule. Dawn vs Kim.
work to get Ohio State & Notre Dame & Mississippi State
We need another Pac 12 team... Oregon or Oregon State

The best experience for our team is to play in hostile environments AWAY. I'll take the sisters of the poor as long as we have good away games.

I'm assuming that the SC game is the Big 12/SEC challenge game (which will probably be shown on ESPN). These games have been switched each year regarding the location (home & away). We played Kentucky at home last year, and Tenn away the previous. Kim doesn't have much choice on this.

I doubt if an in-season game with a&m will happen, as long as CKM is at Baylor. As I recall, she was pretty miffed when they left the Big 12.

That's funny. Scottsdale is not a neutral site. It would be like Baylor playing a neutral site game in Hewitt. That said, Baylor fans would probably still comprise a sizeable percentage of the attendees at Talking Stick.

If ASU wants a neutral site, but still on the rez, play the game in Chinle, AZ.

By "many of you," you mean the Tournament Committee, then yes.

But we scheduled appropriately against traditionally strong programs. I think the difference is the lower schools we scheduled were soooooo low that they skewed the overall rating.

When they abruptly left, KM made it quite clear that they would play the Lady Bears only when aTm earned the right to play them (aka. post season). Lots of Big 12 people were pretty miffed with aTm.

South Carolina has great fan support, not an easy assignment, but still better than Starkville Mississippi.

Good for the Baylor program playing too solid PAC12 schools. Both ASU & Stanford beat Oregon State in 2017-18 season. ASU is going to surprise in the PAC12 next year. I expect that Baylor will have 2 formidable opponents in ASU and Stanford. I think it is great to play solid WBB programs that are different from the style you see in your own conference.

Still a bit disappointing. That's only 4 good teams. We need a team or two from the ACC. And how about Louisville, Tennessee, Notre Dame, Mississippi State., Ohio State,?

If this is the final list we will not be prepared for the NCAA tourney.

Announcement of team matchups for the Las Vegas tournament
has a possibility for a strong competitor.
Awaiting press release.

I hope we never play Louisville during the regular season. If we meet during the Big Dance, then so be it.

Seems about right to me. The season is long and injuries pile up. Too many elite teams could lead to disaster just as much as too few. I'll trust Kim to strike a balance. Any One who plays Texas 2 or 3 times , UConn, and South Carolina should NOT be accused of a weak schedule even if the rest of schedule includes Montana's state school for basket weaving 6 times.

In 2017, the press release for Las Vegas was June 12.

For 2018, press releases for Cancun and Paradise Jam (Virgin Islands) tournaments are available. Baylor is not listed for either tournament.

October 19, 2017

"The Big Ten announced it is increasing league schedules
to 20 games in men's basketball and
18 in women's basketball,
starting in the 2018-19 season.

Big Ten men's teams currently play 18 conference games and the
women's teams play 16.

"The idea behind the 20-game schedule is to hopefully get more teams in the NCAA Tournament," Maryland coach Mark Turgeon said. "Data showed when we went from 16 to 18 we started getting more in."

The coaches backed the expanded league schedule,
but there is some concern about how it will impact nonconference games.

"We've got a pretty full plate, normally," said Wisconsin coach Greg Gard, whose team typically plays in-state rival Marquette along with a preseason tournament and the ACC/Big Ten challenge. "And now you add 2 more conference games, obviously, Power Five games. And you have to make a decision on what you're going to substitute out."
