If they're crazy enough to do this, they're crazy enough to use nukes.
This is kind of proof that they won't use nukes. They'll kick and scream and throw toddler tantrums while launching cruise missiles into Universities and malls. Think Grozny, Syria, etc.
Wrong. The Grozny option is just another step in the escalation.
its a little easier to do Grozny in a place that is wholly within Russian territory. Not gonna be easy on a country of Ukraine's size and with Russia's dwindling precision guided weapons stock. This is the beginning of the toddler tantrum that precedes their finally succumbing to bed. Russia is gonna be put to bed fairly soon.
In any case, Russia accomplished its goals in Chechnya and Syria without nukes. That's no indication of what they might do if the current escalation fails.

To some, short of Putin and Zelenski playing golf together everything is an escalation.

Yep.

Different cultures have different attitudes toward war and what is 'acceptable collateral damage '.

Yet many Americans cling to the misguided notion that everyone throughout the world share our values .

I agree with that. But Nukes are political weapons, not tactical or even strategic. There is no strategy that has a path to survival, there is no guarantee the orders would even be carried out and once ordered Putin is a hunted man internally and externally.

Walk through a strategy of success for Putin using nukes? What happens after?

The fact that Ukraine is able to go tit for tat with Russia is a huge loss for Russia.

That's how it always progresses.

Towards in end of WW2 and prior to the US deploying nuclear weapons ….we used fire bombs on Japan .

One such attack on Tokyo, killed approximately 100,000 people within 24 hours .

But after years of bloodshed few in the United States gave even a 2nd thought to inflicting such horrific casualties on Japanese civilians.

It's the beginnings of Putin's death throes.

He has until the onset of winter to turn this thing around or he is done. He knows it, Ukraine knows it, his political rivals know it and his (soon to be former) political allies know it. The next couple of months are going to be very hard on the Ukrainian people but, if they make it till then, they will not lose the war.

(they may not win but, they will not lose)

The war is over. A decent person would have already sued Ukraine for peace. But Putin doesn't care about the people he throws into the grinder. The nation does not matter, its children do not matter, its future does not matter. The only thing that matters to Putin is trying to achieve personal glory. History will remember Putin as the man who made the Chinese invasion of Russia possible.

Putin's hero is Joseph Stalin .

Early into the Soviet Union's war with the Nazis ….Stalin's army incurred hundreds of thousands killed and almost half a million soldiers captured .

Thousands of square miles of its territory was under Nazis control .

A 'decent person ' would have sued for peace .

Stalin wasn't a decent person .

Neither is Putin .

Ya know. It is a good analogy except that Stalin was double crossed by Hitler and Hitler invaded Russia. Putin may be a worse person than Stalin. He is definitely not as good a leader or as successful as head of Russia.

In my opinion Stalin was far worse than Putin .

Prior to WW2 he executed dozens of his own party members and generals within the Army , executed tens of thousands of random men, women and children ( many of whom had absolutely no idea why they were being executed ) condemned hundreds of thousands of people to the Siberian gulags and intentionally starved to death millions of peasants .

During the war tens of thousands of Red Army troops were executed for any number of real or imagined offenses .

Even after WW2 was won Stalin executed thousands of Soviet army troopers who had dared surrender to the Nazis rather then ' fight to the death ' .

But such ruthlessness ( along with enormous US military aid ) pushed back the Nazis all the way to Berlin . Where still another massive bloodletting took place .

Thoughts:

1. Putin is purportedly dying and seeking a legacy.
2. He thought Ukraine was easy pickins
3. He has escalated only with conventional weapons and conscription
4. He is seeking an off ramp (fake elections)
5. His response to the bridge bombing was conventional guided missiles that MISSED almost all major structures

He is NOT about to use nukes. He wants a legacy that lives beyond him, not one that ends with him. We (the west) can bully him quite a lot if we show strength. He will need a win of some sort, so let's get creative and send him on his way to die in ignominy.

Different strategies.

Zelensky wants Russia to retreat and leave Ukraine. Putin wants to demoralize Ukraine to the point that Ukraine submits to Putin's demands as already made clear.

Impossible to determine .

But Putin has already escalated the war by putting General Sergi Surovikin in charge ……the butcher of Syria.

Yesterday's indiscriminate missile attacks against civilians was his calling card .

Many more Ukrainian civilians are going to die in the coming weeks .

Count on it .

Ukrainians are going to respond as hard as they possibly can ……with even more US weaponry.

And with his appointment of this murderous general ….the war is about to get even uglier .

This is a place where circumstances are a problem for Putin.

There is zero chance Putin is afraid of Biden. But Putin knows Biden is not calling the shots on this side.

So Putin has to guess at what will get the US to give up on Ukraine.

So far his guesses have been more than a little off the mark.

Life has become very simple for Putin .

He was to win in Ukraine or he will be dead one way or another.

The appointment of this new general suggests Putin is determined to employ an increased amount of terror tactics . Tactics that appear to have been successful in Syria .

Consequences be damned .

Stalin's reign ended as a bumbling invalid super paranoid with his closest circle waiting to overtake him. Nature did to him what others were going to inevitably finish if it hadn't.

People are starting to understand the real price of this incursion. A bankrupted Russia with a depleted military beholden to a historical enemy. He has nothing to bargain with except empty threats of nukes. Russian culture? Its history of political transitions will tell you exactly where this is headed.

Many historians now believe Stalin was poisoned by Beria …the head of the secrete police . After making sure Stalin was dead ….Beria openly bragged about poisoning him.

Didn't do Beria much good though . Hated by other party members for his sadism ….he was summarily, privately executed within months .

Many historians now believe Stalin was poisoned by Beria …the head of the secrete police . After making sure Stalin was dead ….Beria openly bragged about poisoning him.

Didn't do Beria much good though . Hated by other party members for his sadism ….he was summarily, privately executed within weeks .
Khrushchev's first order of business was to take out all the Stalinists. Beria was viewed as one.

More than that .

Beria was hated and feared as a serial murderer and serial rapist .

Sadistic toward his victims , he turned into a sniveling coward at his own impromptu execution.

Putin will continue to hit them with conventional cruise missiles. Next step is for Western anti-missile capabilities.

I cannot see the west supplying Ukraine with cruise missiles or fighters. .

I agree with Canada on this one, this continues until Putin is gone. Short of an invasion by China on the eastern frontier, Putin faces no threats but to focus on Ukraine.

Works for me .

We need to protect US border integrity, provide aid for our own poor, focus on rebuilding our own infrastructure.

Wars in Europe have been a regular occurrence for hundreds of years .

The Founding Fathers wanted nothing to do with them .

Another mess created by Putin-puppets in the Obiden Administration.

It is possible both to feel for the civilians facing this tragedy but not really want to start a global meltdown over a place 99% of the virtue signalers could not identify on a map.
