As of this morning, McCarthy is still short.

"GOP Rep. Mike Rogers, a McCarthy ally and the incoming chair of the House Armed Services Committee said in the closed-door meeting with the GOP conference that anyone who votes against McCarthy doesn't get on a committee, according to two sources. CNN previously reported this was a threat McCarthy allies were considering"

The leaders of the GOP still think threating people who want change is the correct move.

McCarthy and his group represent the status quo. More government funding for the War party, no opposition to the radical left in our shared institutions, no end to mass immigration...but plenty of useless "investigations" of Hunter Biden.

180+ Republican House members voted for McCarthy. That means approximately 42 did not vote for him. Less than 25% of the Republican conference will dictate to the majority.

Live Updates: McCarthy Fights to Become Speaker of the House

Several hard-right lawmakers continued to insist that they would not support McCarthy ahead of Tuesday's vote, leaving the election's outcome uncertain. He needs a majority of the House to take the job, and no Democrats are expected to back him.

To be fair, that's exactly what the Never Trumpers did in 2020 and 2022, is it not?

For someone who claims he's Republican, you sure do seem to hate them. Never heard you say a harsh word about a Democrat.

So far, not so good for the new Republican-led House.

No ability to govern. No agenda to govern. Just investigations of investigations.

That will definitely win votes!

M....find where I ever said I am a Republican, pls. I am on the record as a card carrying Independent, but vote mostly Rs, if they are not Trumpers. McCarthy is a meow , relative to his Trumps arse kissing. Eff him! Jim Jordan is the worst of the worst, btw. And that Matt G. is just as horrific. How R's can support these idiots, befuddles.

Well he has been successful at getting rich, keeping the MIC/War party flush with cash, and stymying the conservative populist base of the GOP, and protecting the interests of the GOP donor class.

So McCarthy is successful...just not a doing anything for average conservative voters.

The Grand Old Party has become a grand ole pain. The art of compromise has gone down the drain with each election giving the Democrats a free pass to do as they please.

If we don't get rid of the Santos, Greene and the ilk of Lake we are doomed.

As much as I dislike Trump, he was correct today in saying abortion cause the downfall in the last election.

Many months prior to the election I said the SCOTUS just gave the Democrats the election. Most were critical of me saying inflation was the major cause of voter dissatisfaction.

I was referring to your consternation that a minority of Republicans are trying to dictate to the majority regarding who should be leader. Wouldn't that same adage aptly apply to the Never Trumpers - a small minority of the Republican Party attempting to hold the majority hostage by threatening in essence to burn the house down if Trump (or his candidates) are either nominated or elected?

An exercise is the highest level of dip****tery in recent memory - and I say that advisedly.

Any movement led by Matt Goetz is going to be short on smart and high on self-aggrandizement.

Chip is correct.

As in so many interactions with Trump, it benefitted Trump and didn't benefit the other at all.

You don't often speak truly - but this is completely true. If the GOP had nutted up and just expunged that scum and his ilk, they'd be in charge of Congress right now.

Wait. I am sorry. Isn't Kevin McCarthy part of the Republican leadership that gave the party an absolutely lackluster 2022 midterm election? If yes, tell me why he deserves a promotion?

How is Matt G. 'horrific ' ?

Fine - propose someone that can win. What is your counter-proposal? Or are you good with Democrats having the speakership?

As long as Republicans don't vote for any Democrats, the Democrats will not have the Speakership. A majority, not a plurality, is required to get the gavel. There is a compromise candidate among the Republican caucas. I don't know who it is, but we don't need Paul Ryan II.
