I honestly do not understand the hate toward McCarthy. What is to be won not voting for him when there is not a viable alterative. The GOP needs to lean that while every Republican may not be "perfect" in another's eyes still better than a Democrat election-denying radical.

McCathy debased himself before Trump for nothing.

As in so many interactions with Trump, it benefitted Trump and didn't benefit the other at all.
You don't often speak truly - but this is completely true. If the GOP had nutted up and just expunged that scum and his ilk, they'd be in charge of Congress right now.

lol a GOP without MAGA would not be a majority party.

There is no national voting base for a rehash of Bush-Cheney republicanism.

I know this is really going to make some of you guys not sure how to get up tomorrow, but this seems to have nothing to do with Trump despite the TDS tendency to blame the price of tea in China on him.

180+ Republican House members voted for McCarthy. That means approximately 42 did not vote for him. Less than 25% of the Republican conference will dictate to the majority.
To be fair, that's exactly what the Never Trumpers did in 2020 and 2022, is it not?

In the election of a Speaker?
I was referring to your consternation that a minority of Republicans are trying to dictate to the majority regarding who should be leader. Wouldn't that same adage aptly apply to the Never Trumpers - a small minority of the Republican Party attempting to hold the majority hostage by threatening in essence to burn the house down if Trump (or his candidates) are either nominated or elected?
You are comparing the voting patterns of moderate Republican and Independents to 19 Republicans in a Speaker election. They are vastly different things.
I don't care if you guys block McCarthy. He made the trip to Mar a Lago to kiss the ring after Jan 6. He has been rolled by the so-called Freedom Caucus; what will liberals do to him?
In the general election moderates and Independents aren't blocking the election of an executive branch officer, they're just not voting for your preferred candidate. I'm not holding anyone hostage for my vote. You guys nominate candidates and I'll consider them. I'm not asking for anything.

Agree. I don't care one way or another about Kevin McCarthy, but who is the alternative?

I thought that Gohmert leaving would raise the IQ of the Republican caucus. I was wrong. Jordan, who claims he doesn't want the office, gained 1 vote to 20 total

Third Vote for Speaker Concludes Without a Winner

Members will take successive votes until someone secures the majority needed to prevail. Representative Kevin McCarthy, the party leader, fell short in a third vote as 20 Republicans rejected his bid and backed Jim Jordan of Ohio.

Powerline said gridlock is almost as good as Constitutional governance. I hope nothing, including a budget, comes to the floor of the House until the federal government learns to live on $3.5 trillion a year or less. Trillion dollar deficits are now the norm and that is unacceptable.

Exactly - what do these idiots think they will accomplish other than more bad press that shows the GOP for the dysfunction it is ... no wonder the Republican Senate did not trust them.

The problem is there is a polity and process. You don't like McCarthy, fine, vote him out as Minority Leader, Whip, etc. Run a viable candidate six years ago. You do not start assuming the majority of Congress this way.

The Democrats probably have more idiots in the House, but at least their idiots know how to follow orders and goosestep behind the Establishment.

For someone who claims he's Republican, you sure do seem to hate them. Never heard you say a harsh word about a Democrat.
M....find where I ever said I am a Republican, pls. I am on the record as a card carrying Independent, but vote mostly Rs, if they are not Trumpers. McCarthy is a meow , relative to his Trumps arse kissing. Eff him! Jim Jordan is the worst of the worst, btw. And that Matt G. is just as horrific. How R's can support these idiots, befuddles.
So, you are a card-carrying independent (wait a second, you guys have cards?) that votes mostly Rs, despite only ever complaining about and hating Rs?

Weird. Are you a masochist?

What makes Jim Jordan 'worst of the worst ' ?

How is Matt G. 'horrific ' ?

A big debate in the House! How egregious!
It is time the position meant something. Now it will have to be someone who can "get things done" to get voted in, be it McCarthy or anyone else. They now have to really earn it.

Gotta give Dems credit for sticking together. The Republican House is acting lie a bunch of mean girls at a junior high slumber party. If they f*** this up, I will throw my already meaningless vote away on the almost anonymous Libertarian candidates going forward.

IF the 5 hold firm, sensible people will eventually acknowledge McCarthy is not viable. Then the search begins for someone who is.

There are alternatives. All it takes is for moderates to be moderate and sensible and all that stuff, to be smarter than the cow.

Let the process play out. Somebody will cave. Eventually. In the meantime, no money will be spent. Relax. Enjoy the show.
