Correct. Ask LeBron James if he had a time machine would he do it over again regarding his first enslaved ancestor (who was 99% likely enslaved by an African).ATL Bear said:
If we're being completely honest in this conversation, the reality is that the Africans whose ancestors were not transported to the United States are the ones who have been economically disadvantaged and left behind. That includes the vast majority of slaves that never made it out of Brazil or the Caribbean.
The economic value equation of slavery has been so overstated as to be absurd.

What if those gross deficiencies in the American black culture were in large part created by the New Deal and, particularly, the Great Society? What if blacks in America could immediately reverse those trends by exercising self-control, finishing school, waiting to have kids until they are married and getting married? What if virtually the entirety of the social pathology in the black community could be eliminated by promoting good choices and denigrating the actors in the subculture who are promoting the opposite?Mothra said:Interestingly enough, that issue is fairly recent. Blacks in America today aren't victims of anything but their own choices....just like every other race, creed and color in the country. If you want others to think you are a victim, it's because you are a piece of chit grifter who wants free cash and no expectations.

You can make something of a claim that Racism remains an issue to address. especially at a Cultural level, but that would morally require the observation that Blacks are now Racist at least as often as any other race.
There is effectively zero systemic racism in the US, excepting Affirmative Action programs. Individual hate behavior still exists, but is commonly a product of Cultural indoctrination more than anything else.

We can have a separate discussion of systemic racism. Thats not what I'm talking about. Even if racism had completely ended, there would be fallout to slavery. If you deny a people education and knowledge for generations, you can't just fix it with a law. The fact that such a huge percentage of blacks living in generational poverty can trace the roots of that poverty back to slavery proves nothing but should make you consider whether maybe slavery had consequences. White share croppers too, for that matter.
I am all for personal esponsibility, but there are entire zip codes where statistically, for generations, very few raise themselves out of poverty. Living next to one presents a reality to me that you might just not see, and that's ok. The system has failed these people hard. Not talking about systemic racism, just busted education and social services. And when it has been this way going straight back to slavery, it becomes especially clear slavery had something to do with it. That and a failed Reconstruction that left many blacks even worse off than the day they were freed.

Slavery ended in 1865 in the United States. Ergo, the direct effects of Slavery ended with the children who were alive in 1865. By now Slavery is a historical episode, worthy of examination and discussion but no more a direct factor in anyone's life than the style of boots worn by Antebellum soldiers.
Conflating Poverty and Slavery is very Woke but has nothing in the way of real substance. I agree that Education and Culture and a range of factors are present as causes for both Poverty and Prosperity, but it's intellectually lazy, verging on dishonest, to lay it all on one cause, however handy the villain.
Don't forget that freed slaves in many cases immediately became successful. The first Blacks elected to Congress were in 1870; both the House and Senate. Many black Americans were successful entrepreneurs and businessmen, too. Some did not thrive, but again there are a plethora of reasons for that, not just the scapegoat you want to beat.

Oh man. I have a lot of educating to do. I need to come up with a good list of ways Trump was a disaster so Harrison doesn't think he was America's greatest President, and now I need to quantify for old bear that unbroken lines of generational poverty sharing 1 common root can be partially attributed to that root. I might even do both, but I know it always falls upon deaf ears. If you were willing to learn you would have already learned such an obvious fact.

We've already spent trillions on helping people escape generational poverty, and yet we still have generational poverty. describing the problem as systemic oppression is grandiose excuse making for failed policy.
