All good points. The Roman Republic, however, was marred by much violence and ended in civil war and a monarchy. If memory serves (it's been a long time since I've studied Ancient Rome), assassination became a political staple in the later years of the republic. Caesar & the Ides of March was just a later example. I don't expect the Dutch Republic was as violent.

The real problem is whether the dispute between Palestine and Israel is a territorial dispute, a holy war, or both and if implementing a UN resolution from 75 years ago today will calm tensions. Israeli Zionists did not calm tensions back then by unilaterally declaring a Jewish state through force of arms and terrorist tactics. Certainly invading Gaza will not calm tensions. But basically there generations of Palestinian kids have been indoctrinated into a jihadist mindset in that time and so implementing a two state solution now may not do so either. But that is the only way forward so that everyone will be without excuse. If after that, jihad persists then the world may need to understand that instead of playing whack a mole that it has to go to war with Allah with the sort of tactics Hadrian used against Judaism and Cortez used against the Aztec religion... and while attacking Mecca and Medina may offend western sensibilities it will spare the lives of millions of civilians and destroy the credibility of The Friday sermons of Imams everywhere.
What? Palestinian and Arab terrorist attacks on Jews in the area preceded 1947 and were frequent. And barely a second lapsed after the UN partition before widescale Arab terror attacks. It only got worse after the declaration of Israel, as the entire Arab world attacked.Realitybites said:

When we think of Rome, we should be thinking of Byzantium. Rome survived in Constantinople for centuries after the empire in the west collapsed. The Fall of Civilizations Podcast has an excellent two part video on you tube titled "The Last of the Romans".

True. However, the eastern half of the empire was always different and that is reflected in the division of Christianity between Catholicism & Orthodox..

Yes but Justinian was a brief exception to the rest of Byzantine history. Justinian was a great leader. Two notable accomplishments: he furthered the codification of Roman law (begun by Julius Caesar & completed by Napoleon) and he had built the largest church in all Christendom. When the Muslim Turks conquered the empire they converted it into a mosque, the Hagia Sophia.

Israel is doomed .
They have at least 400 nukes and a 1st world economy and military.
Why would they be doomed?
Their largest neighbor Egypt (who is about as militarily competent as Mexico) even has a peace treaty with them that they have honored since 1979
Not only that....but fertility rates are a major sign of if your nation has a future. And Israel has a fertility rate of 3.0 (while most of the Europe and N. America are below replacement).
Israel's population is growing...with ultra-orthodox growing very fast.
[Israel's population will surge by 70 percent, to almost 16 million, by 2050, with the ultra-Orthodox accounting for about a third of all Israeli Jews]
How are they doomed? Can you name a European country that is going to have 70% population growth over the next 30 years and a 3.0 fertility rate? Its all the countries in Europe that you should be worried about...not Israel.

A few hours later, at dawn, Yussuf received a frantic call from that same passenger, begging Yussuf to return and get him out of… pic.twitter.com/xKmHgonkdU

Israel needs to remove the scourge of the earth that is Hamas from this earth. They have no obligation to support the supporters of Hamas. Biden and Blinken just need to stay the F out of the way. Israel has got this!KaiBear said:
A ground war is a huge mistake.
Israel now assumes responsibility in providing for almost 2 million enemies.

The leadership of Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Iran can not allow the 'supporters of Hamas' to starve, or be willfully slaughtered and still remain in power.RD2WINAGNBEAR86 said:Israel needs to remove the scourge of the earth that is Hamas from this earth. I agree that Israel needs the U.S. support. Joe Biden does not need to play the role of starting quarterback. He needs to be silent player on the practice squad. Let Israel do what has to be done.KaiBear said:The leadership of Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Iran can not allow the 'supporters of Hamas' to starve, or be willfully slaughtered and still remain in power.RD2WINAGNBEAR86 said:Israel needs to remove the scourge of the earth that is Hamas from this earth. As the masses in each Muslim country would rise up against them.
Israel does not 'got this', and survives only with massive US support.
I’ve heard a lot of people complain recently that they can’t criticize Israel without being accused of being an antisemite. In fact, it’s very easy to criticize Israel without being called an antisemite, I do it all the time.
