Israel would be very stupid to grant the Palestinians an independent state. No doubt many regret what they've already done: allowing them to have Gaza to use a base for continual terrorist attacks.

As for the apartheid comparisons, they are ignorant historically. It's fascist propaganda by people who know little and understand less the huge, consequential events & trends at play. It's also very dangerous because our leaders share that perspective and routinely make important decisions based upon it.

No they are ignorant in their application.

The White South Africans wanted the Blacks out of their Nation and were willing to shrink the size of the White South African State by 20% or more and grant the Black nations their own countries.

(before international pressure forced them to try a 1 state solution that has not worked out very well for anyone)

While Israel is actively trying to take more land in the West Bank and has no intention of ever giving the Palestinians as state.

Actually, the apartheid comparisons are ignorant in just about every way, including historically. There resolution is no comparison. It's all contrasts.

Apartheid means "separateness" is Afrikaner

The Jews in Israel very much want to be separate from the Arabs and in the West Bank specifically they have created a military-civil system that keeps them separate from the Arabs and the Arabs under their control

It's at the very least a mild comparison that can be made.

[Israel imposes a system of oppression and domination against Palestinians across all areas under its control: in Israel and the OPT, and against Palestinian refugees, in order to benefit Jewish Israelis. This amounts to apartheid as prohibited in international law.
Laws, policies and practices which are intended to maintain a cruel system of control over Palestinians, have left them fragmented geographically and politically, frequently impoverished, and in a constant state of fear and insecurity.]

People have been making the comparison for a long time

Good Job, IDF!

>>
The IDF released the following statement on Saturday:

"It has been cleared for publication that in a complex operation by the IDF, Shin Bet, and the Yamam unit of the Israel police four Israeli hostages were rescued this morning (Saturday). The hostages, Noa Argamani (25), Almog Meir (21), Andrey Kozlov (27), and Shlomi Ziv (40), were kidnapped by Hamas to the Gaza Strip from the 'Nova' party on October 7th.

The hostages were rescued by Shin Bet and Yamam fighters from two different locations in an operation in the heart of Nuseirat.

When they ask why so many Gazans are being killed... this right here.
The Gazans were guarding the hostages, and had to be fought off in order to rescue the hostages.
There are no innocent Gazans... it's a hoax.

But the antisemites will parrot all the Hamas propaganda to make those Gazans seem innocent & pure as the driven snow and paint the IDF as Nazis. The won't use the label but their descriptions of Israeli "genocide" are similar. I doubt they are aware of the irony. Hatred does that.

It is true. the Hamas and Palestinians are not the good guys, and they are not to be trusted. The Hamas should have released all the hostages months ago. The Hamas play the humanitarian sympathy card, but they have shown no sympathy to the hostages.

They never should have taken any hostages in the first place. That's what differentiates civilized from uncivilized. Hamas is a highly organized and well funded criminal organization. It bears little resemblance to any legitimate political structure. Alarmingly, this description is becoming more accurate every day when applied to our Democrat Party.

yep. Israel created Hamas and then even got the Iranians to provide Hamas with a $100m annual budget! It's a lot like that time the USA wanted a war with Russia and cleverly created one by seducing Ukraine to say the words "...EU/Nato, EU/Nato, EU/Nato...." enough times that Russia would psychologically snap and be forced to invade to stop them from saying it, because, as we all know, EU/Nato are hostile imperial powers who bully their neighbors into joining them.

Poor Russia. Poor peaceful Russia. If only America would leave them alone and let them invade as many neighbors as they wish, there would be peace on earth..
Poor Hamas. Poor peaceful Hamas. If only Israel would leave them along and let them fill the sky every day with missiles aimed Jewish cities, there would be peace on earth.

Forever?

"'These things says He who is holy, He who is true, "He who has the key of David, He who opens and no one shuts, and shuts and no one opens": 8 "I know your works. See, I have set before you an open door, and no one can shut it; for you have a little strength, have kept My word, and have not denied My name. Indeed I will make those of the synagogue of Satan, who say they are Jews and are not, but lie indeed I will make them come and worship before your feet, and to know that I have loved you. Because you have kept My command to persevere, I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth. Behold, I am coming quickly! Hold fast what you have, that no one may take your crown. He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he shall go out no more. I will write on him the name of My God and the name of the city of My God, the New Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God. And I will write on him My new name.

"He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches." '

The key of whom? Have not denied what? The synagogue of whom? He who does what? The city of God is the what Jerusalem? Where does it come from? Lots of things to consider if you simply put away the Scofield reference notes and quit Judaizing.

I was told that it is an anti semitic conspiracy theory that we are a Zionist Occupied Govt but it is 100% true and it needs to change. Thank God for Thomas Massie. He is one of the few if not the only good reps that we have. We cannot keep going on serving Israeli interests first while we drown ourselves in endless debt. Sadly, I doubt much will change with the next Trump admin. Him taking the $100 million from Miriam Adelson means that Nikki Haley and these other Zio owned republicans will be implanted in his admin to make sure that nothing changes.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said "we are at war, and we will win it" as the country's air force began striking Hamas targets in Gaza on Saturday, in response to a surprise assault on the 50th anniversary of the start of the 1973 Yom Kippur war. Hamas militants infiltrated Israeli territory from the Gaza Strip including by paraglider and over the sea and launched more than 3,000 rockets, Israeli military leaders said.

The confrontation, which has killed at least 40 Israelis and injured at least 740, is one of the most serious in years following weeks of rising tensions along the volatile border. A militant group in Gaza, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, announced Israeli soldiers were being held captive as the Israeli Defense Forces refused to comment on unverified videos circulating of hostages allegedly being taken by Hamas.

Its more of an ethnic-national war than a religious war.

And secularism is on the rise in the region just like everywhere else...but the conflict goes and and would continue to go on if both sides were completely agonistic.

For instance "68% of Israeli Muslims say religion is very important in their lives...30% of Israeli Jews say religion is important in their lives, but a 2021 survey found that 45% of Jewish people over 20 identify as secular or not religious"

So basically 1 in 3 Arabs say they are not really religious anymore and almost half of Jews say the same.

The most religious group over there (Hasidic ultra-orthodox Jews) are the most checked out of the conflict and don't even serve in the army and take a very ambivalent stance on Israel as a State.

Satmar for instance (one of the largest Hasidic dynasties) is open hostile to State at all.

Secularism is not on the rise in Palestine, or Lebanon, or Syria, or Iran, or Yemen....nor anywhere else in meaningful ways. It would, however, be correct to say that islamism may have reached a high-water mark and may be entering a period of decline. that has as much to do with human nature as any underlying causes - it is the nature of political movements to storm into power with good margins of support for certain sets of ideas, then decline over time as those high-minded ideas get ground up by the gears & nuts & bolts of running a country....kitchen table issues, good governance issues, etc.... I think that's where we are with islamism at the moment = it has done no better at improving the lives of citizens than the regimes it replaced. Within that larger context though, Iran is funding islamist movements (shia and sunni both) to increase its influence in its near-sphere (Iraq, Syria, Armenia), and destabilizing control over its outer sphere (Lebanon, Israel/Palestine, Yemen, Caucasus, etc....) All that's to say: the proximate causes of the issues under debate in this thread are not "secularism" on the rise. Closer to the opposite, given that it's all funded by an islamist regime, for aims that are in large part islamist (which happens to coincide with larger geopolitical issues).

https://www.pewresearch.org/global/2006/07/26/lebanons-muslims-relatively-secular-and-prochristian/

And in Israel and Palestine the Arab nationalist movement and Zionism were strongly secular....

[Palestinian nationalism's primary affiliation was not to the global umma but to the Arab world a concept defined in secular terms and including significant Christian populations. When the Israeli state was established in 1948 resulting in the dispossession of around three-quarters of the Palestinian people Arab voices everywhere attributed their defeat to Arab disunity, rather than Islamic foundering. For much of the 1950s and 1960s, the hero of the Palestinian cause was Egyptian President Gamal abd-Al Nasser, who promoted an ideology of secular pan-Arabism.
The roots of Zionism were similarly secular. While religious forms of the ideology existed from the early days of its emergence in the late 19th century, the mainstream movement was inspired far more by post-Enlightenment notions of secular nationalism than any religious text. Zionist forefather Theodor Herzl was an atheist, as was his close colleague Max Nordau. Ze'ev Jabotinsky, who led the hardline Revionist Zionist movement in the interwar years, also eschewed religion, defining his Jewishness in secular nationalist terms.
This trend continued after the establishment of Israel. President Chaim Weizmann (in office 1949-52) and Prime Minister David Ben Gurion (in office 1948-54 and 1955-63) were both self-proclaimed atheists. For the first three decades of Israel's existence, national politics were dominated by the socialist Mapai/Labor Party, which favoured a secular leftist form of Zionism. The popularity of the kibbutz movement in the first few decades of Israeli history was a further testament to the mainstream nature of socialist secular ideas in early Israeli society.
Similarly, Palestinian nationalism had strongly leftist dynamics in the mid-twentieth century. From the late 1960s, two of the largest parties in the umbrella Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) were the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) and the Democratic Front for Liberation of Palestine (DFLP). Both adhered to Marxist-Leninist ideologies and promoted the notion of Palestinian liberation through full political and economic revolution. The parties' leaders were not only secular, but were avowed atheists from Christian backgrounds; the PFLP's George Habash had sung in his church choir as a young boy, while DFLP founder Nayef Hawatmeh had been raised in a Catholic family. In other words, they were as far removed from political Islam as possible.]

Here's the question you need to evaluate: is islam going the way of Christianity (long term trend of fading away to little more than a cultural identity)? or is it simply reverting to the mean?

You should put your money on the latter.

Lots & lots of pictures of young people dancing in nightclubs, women wearing western bathing suits on the beach....in pre-1980 Iran. There were casinos in Khartoum when Sadiq al'Mahdi took over in Sudan in the 1980s. I could go on a bit with examples. One of my closest local friends in Sudan owned the brewery there when Al-Mahdi took over. They drove into his warehouse and ran APCs over cases of beer for hours, and for a couple hundreds of yards downstream, fish turned belly up in the Nile from all the alcohol that flowed in. My friend died (young) quite a while back, but I'm still Facebook friends with his wife & kids (living in UK).

The error in your analysis is not looking over the longer term. We are watching (i.e. your polls are documenting) the subsidence of a modern flourishing of islamism during the post Cold War period.

Islam was the dominant civilization on earth for several hundred years. It's rise severed the trans-Eurasian trade routes, sparking the Dark Ages. The need for sea trade routes to Asia spawned the European Age of Exploration, which reordered trade so thoroughly that the islamic world entered into a relatively isolated senescence. From islam's high water mark at the gates of Vienna in 1683, it took only 200 years for nearly the entirety of the islamic world to be colonized by European powers. During the colonial period, the native elites in the islamic world were highly westernized (see Shah regime in Iran for exemplar). Islam was for the poor, the rural hicks, the people who rode camels to work, etc..... During the post colonial period, mostly secular strongmen lined up behind greater powers in the east or west as the Cold War intensified. islamism was more ruthlessly suppressed in the post colonial period than during colonization itself, but survived as a cultural purity movement in Egypt's underground Muslim Brotherhood, which seduced much of the intelligensia and, pointedly, junior officer class in the military. Iran was the first islamist regime to rise. Then Sudan. The collapse of the Berlin Wall, released all the containing pressure. And by 9/11, the floodgates were wide open and islamism was a threat to world order.

So we've seen the mad rush toward islamism as a "return to our roots" pathway to restored glory (an old theme in human history). Now, the legitimacy of the islamists has been tarnished by the all too human failures of achieving long-term success on good governance issues. What we are left with is an islamic world that far more islamic than it was when I entered on duty. The terror groups back then? virtually all secular - PLO, PFLP, Abu Nidal, etc.......the PIJ (Palestinian Islamic Jihad) was a joke. It had no money. an irrelevance. It's still the other way around now, and likely will be for a while (centuries). Islam remembers that time when it was the titan of world affairs, it it aspires to be so again. It will lose, but the contest will be expensive. As I've said many times.....one of history's most enduring lessons is that it takes a LOT of money and lives to emerge victorious from a war that your opponent has no chance of winning.

Reversion to the mean. What is that mean? Reasonable people can disagree on that, but it's not tenable to put that mean into a western context of a centuries long-trend to fully secularized society. Islam is not built to tolerate that. It is built to enforce compliance with faith.

To the extent we see variances in the long term trends, look to how the West, China, and Russia spend their money to influence the islamic world. Will that build or deter the forces of secularism? Smart answer is....some of both. No one will want to partner with islamists except in extremis. That should keep islamism postured as the holder of the "return to greatness by returning to our roots" flame. Which is its strongest position....
