There's a whole bunch of guys like you on this forum that should get down on their knees and give thanks for the Warren court and NYT v. Sullivan.
New York Times Co. v. Sullivan was a landmark 1964 Supreme Court case that established the "actual malice" rule, which limits libel lawsuits against public officials:

  • The case
The case involved a full-page ad in The New York Times in 1960 that described civil rights protests in Montgomery, Alabama. The ad was mostly accurate, but it contained some factual inaccuracies. L.B. Sullivan, a Montgomery police commissioner, sued the newspaper for libel, claiming that the ad implied his responsibility for the police actions. The Alabama court ruled in Sullivan's favor, ordering the newspaper to pay $500,000 in damages.

  • The decision
The Supreme Court unanimously ruled in favor of the newspaper, establishing the "actual malice" rule. The court ruled that:

    • The First Amendment protects the right to publish all statements.

    • To prove libel, a public official must show that what was said against them was made with "reckless disregard" for the truth.

  • The significance
The decision protected the press and others who speak on public affairs. It allowed the press to report on public affairs without fear of libel judgments, and it held public officials accountable to their constituents

DaSantis needs to remain as the chief executive of the state of Florida.

Both for the benefit of the people of Florida, and his own national ambitions.

That is not true. I have been honest about those I like and those I don't. Chief of Staff, Interior, Border, and last time all three of Supreme Courts, Mnunchin and Pompeo were especially good. I even said I can see Musk in his role.

You be honest, Trump has some whack job selections - Gaetz-AG? The Fox News anchor SecD? Really? You think he is qualified to run DOD? That would be your choice, a TV guy. Or Gaetz in charge of DOJ? Vivek? You want this guy making recommendations on what to gut?

I am honest enough to have opinions both ways, you are a lackey. You seem to swoon over whatever Donald says. Maybe we should change from oldbear to jillbear while you glaze Donald ...

Yes, Sullivan is an important decision with a huge impact. Unfortunately, much of that if negative as the MSM spreads more fascist lies, deception, & other forms of propaganda as much as it reports the news. The media have earned much blame for the problems plaguing American because they refuse to do their job.

I also thought it's hilarious that Jr, who brags so often about his financial knowledge, somehow imagines that the Secretary of Defense is primarily a Controller rather than the guy who drives military strategy and builds the military's ability to fight. You know, the kind of things a combat veteran would be well-suited for. As opposed to, say, someone like Milley, who looks and sounds like he spent a lot more time at parties than in action.

Not that he has no accomplishments - Publisher of the Princeton Tory, BA from Princeton, Master of Public Policy from the JFK School at Harvard, analyst at Bear Stearns, contributor at the Manhattan Institute (think tank), two stints at 501c3s, finalist for Secretary of Veteran Affairs in 2016, contributor on CNN/MSNBC and host at Fox News. Dude keeps rising to the top, even when he stumbles.

Trump wants someone who has kicked out doors to restore warrior culture. To do that, he will need someone who is loyal, courageous, and good communicator. Hegseth is that.

JR regurgitates all the allegations & spin as if they were scrupulous truths, rather than putting rather more weight on the fact that the left always attacks hardest the things it fear most. Fact is, Hegseth is where he is because he's got some skills. He's taking flack because he's over the target. The pertinent question is, are his skills what is needed at the moment. I think so. He is what Trump (and a majority of Americans) want our military to be - a warrior. Who better to lead reforms to rebuild warrior culture? His communication skills will be a big asset. So, yeah. Apt choice. Very logical choice.

Voters are not interested in establishmentarianism. They think establishments are broken....................

Being a combat veteran would give him some insights, however SecD is a much larger role than what a Company or Field Grade officer would have experience doing, combat experience or not. Field Grade officers have very little to do with "building an Army", they are more Battalion or Company level commanders or staff officers.

If he was a Brigadier General or Major General working on building Corps and Army level units, having Corps or NATO level command experience. Than I would agree.

The question is can Hegsworth (Sp?) navigate Congress and get DoD the resources they need? That is much more in the SecD area of responsibility than tactical Field grade command decisions. The "woke ****" is a miniscule part of DoD. Hell, the Navy and Air Force weapons platforms are a huge issue as the increased capabilities are being outpaced by unit cost? How does he deliver those assets in the numbers needed? Can he navigate Congress to keep his budgets adequate? That is the SecD's job.
