~60 people on board the passenger jet, no word yet on survivors.

WTH was that helicopter pilot thinking?

There is a video that reportedly shows the crash. Doesn't look good. Looks like they both went right down after impact.

Can't understand why a helicopter would be flying that close to the airport and directly in the path of a runway.

Flew right into the plane.

I guess you've never flow into Reagan. One of the most congested airspaces in the world. You routinely see helicopters on approach flying the Potomac, circling the city, etc.

Looks like the plane was ordered to a shorter runway minutes before approach and the helo pilot, whom confirmed visual, was actually confirming visual on another airplane on approach to a longer runway. They didn't look up to their 10:00 and ran right into them. Horrific accident.

I haven't flown in and out of DCA a whole lot but I know the area. A lot of times the approach follows the bends in the river to avoid flying over the city. The main runway (01) is 7100' and is lined up so that at least the final approach/takeoff are over the longest straight stretches of the Potomac. I don't think I have ever landed there except on 01, as do most "regular" sized commercial planes (737, A300, etc.).

However, since this was a smaller Bombardier CRJ, it was capable of landing on the shorter runway 33, which is only 5500' long or so. Too short for most full-sized commercial jets except when there is no alternative. But 33 is aligned at an angle to the river that requires coming in over Anacostia and crossing the Potomac almost perpendicularly. So any other commercial aircraft probably wouldn't have been in this approach.

If the copter was thinking the commercial traffic landing was all coming straight up the river ahead of him, he probably didn't notice or focus on one coming across the river at the same time as him.

None of that explains why there would be a helicopter flying directly in the path of a runway, imo.

To me that seems like a no brainer, no matter how congested the airspace is. Seems like that is a no go area at all times.

On this map, the long runway is 01 running N-S pretty much parallel to the river (or as parallel as it could be, given the bends in the river). That's the one that gets 90%+ of commercial traffic. From what I have seen the copter was flying parallel to the runway along the E bank (across the river from DCA) and would have usually been passing DCA and its approaching aircraft from the other side of the river.

The AA flight was rerouted onto runway 33, which is the one crossing 01 from top left down to the right. The final approach to it goes directly across the Potomac, not tracing the path of the river like landing on 01 would. So it appears their routes crossed at exactly the wrong point and exactly the wrong time.

Way too many close calls recently.

Both the PAT helicopter and the airliner supposedly had FLARM equipment meant to avoid collision,

Question is, was it deactivated last night for some reason?

Yea, sometimes I just wish Trump wouldn't be so Trump.

Sure DEI hires is a huge issue, if you aren't qualified by merit you should not then be
qualified by being in a certain demographic.

But, there is a time and a place to bring these matters up.

The first press conference after a tragedy is not the time or place.

He disbanded an FAA task force or committee, memos went out 3 days before inauguration, so the same type of nut job that blames DEI without knowing jack, will blame Trump, without knowing Jack.

On the radio, a helicopter pilot for the Air Force was saying ATC will often clear helicopters to either follow aircraft, or go in below them, because traffic is so high in this area. The helicopter pilot was probably cleared to follow an aircraft or stay below it, but was simply looking at the wrong aircraft.

She said almost certainly the FAA will cut back helicopter traffic in the area, because this has been a disaster in the making for years. She was quick to say it is speculation. And everything would come out in the investigation.

If so, it sounds like a higher up FAA issue, that they did not manage the pressure to clear so much traffic in the D.C. area well. Doubtful that the people working, or DEI, has anything to do with it.

Trump has a special talent. Making normality seem real, real dumb. This will just cement in some minds that hatred of DEI is not based upon anything other than racism.

I read on a lib forum that Trump is just trying to implant in conservatives brains that minority=disaster.

So we're either of the pilots or the overworked ATC guy DEI people (I.e. black)? That seems sort of relevant if Trump a going to make that statement.
