DOGE has been a success: they've exposed a great deal of waste & fraud. They did a great job just by making the effort and proving it can be done by trying. It's incumbent upon congress to act upon their recommendations and clean up the mess. Hopefully now that the Big Beautiful Bill has passed they will do some of that but I'm not overly optimistic.

By the way, that title cracks me up. I know it's kind of silly and initially BBB reminded me of the fascist slogan for their fraudulent evil agenda. But it's catchy, clever, and it works. Trump the deal maker!

As I understand it, these cuts are cancelled spending already approved. It's not a surplus except in the relative sense. It is a reduction of debt.

It's a relatively small amount but it's a start. If Congress can continue doing this, using DOGE recommendations for example, then we can eventually get a balanced budget and a surplus. That will take time especially with the Dems & RINO's fighting everything tooth and nail, aided by rogue judges. One thing that has already been done and is continuing is the reduction in the federal workforce. Thousands of govt employees have been laid off, each with a comfortable annual salary & benefits. Hypothetically, if they averaged $100k per year and 1k were laid off that would save taxpayers $100 million each year.

For the first time, someone is taking the problem seriously and actually doing something. It's great news… if it continues.

Yes a real budget every year starting from scratch. Part of the problem for many years is that when they had budgets, they always used the previous year as a base line with an automatic increase. Govt agencies became more and more bloated and wasteful. They never considered cutting anything, even if they spent our money on something that was no longer needed (if ever). Even worse, every govt agency got in the habit of spending whatever was left over at the end of each fiscal year because they were afraid of cuts. So they would use our money on fancy parties, expensive junkets, conventions, etc much of which was a total waste.

Tough to budget every year to zero base at that size. I think it should be done with the Census. Do the Census, Zero Base the budget, reform the tax code every 10 years. One feeds the other.

That's a pretty reasonable compromise. However, part of my point is that the govt is far too huge with massive amounts of bloat & waste. It must be greatly downsized, maybe even to the point in which zero based budgeting is possible. If not as a whole then at least for each department. We don't need 20 or more cabinet departments, for example.

Here's what your anger causes you to miss. Doge does an audit. Doge refers to DOJ. DOJ decides whether or not to investigate. DOJ investigates. DOJ charges. DOJ negotiates a plea (or goes to trial). That is not a 4 month process, friend. The audit took that long (Jan-May). Investigations are just now starting up.

But more importantly: Does it really matter whether the auditors or the cops found the fraud? Isn't the real problem the fraud itself? First, you thundered incredulously that there could be no fraud. Then, when massive fraud is uncovered, you cite it as proof Doge was unnecessary. That's like saying we don't need to audit banks, because we have procedures in place to prevent banks from making bad loans, then when bankers have to foreclose on bad loans, we say "see, we don't need auditors....the bankers handled everything without them just fine."
