AI doesn't "know" anything. All it does it aggregate. So when it makes wild statements that's because it "learned" that from all the collective posts it skimmed.

The AI isn't racist or antisemitic…but the underlying posts where it gets its information are.

Are you familiar with the concept of AGI?

The goal is for AI to aggregate data and form hypothesis and conclusions.

Billions were not spent and countless hours from the world's brightest minds for the end result to be a copy/paste bot...
This is a thread about a flood in the Texas hill country. Over 100 people were killed, including many 8-9 year old girls at a summer camp. Many people on this board knew some of these people, or have close friends or relatives who were related to these people. Meaningful discussions can be had surrounding how/why that happened and what can be done to prevent it or make it at least less likely in the future.

Can you refrain from clogging up this thread with your antisemitic garbage? There are plenty of threads specifically about Israel where you can go do that.

I can refrain as long as people are not forced to sign "garbage" BDS pledges that they will not boycott Israel before they can recieve their disaster aid like the last time this happened.
Are you a bane on the existence of everyone around you in real life, or just on this board?

You lecture me about "clogging up" this thread but then choose to post an inane personal attack. Practice what you preach.

Yeah. It doesn't work. It's cold fusion. It's the future state. Not the present.

It's why AI excels at chess but not logic games.
All due respect, you're letting the village idiot drag you along as he takes this thread off the rails because he got catfished by some fake Jew hater bait and felt compelled to drop it on a thread about flooding in Texas.

Back to this terrible tragedy. Several reasons it was so bad.

1) It was July 4th weekend and the river was completely loaded with vacationers and campers.

2) The crest was over 37 feet, the highest ever recorded and it rose with unpresidented speed.

3) Many camps, mobile home parks, RV parks and camping areas are within the 100 year flood plain.
Many of those were wiped off the face of the earth.

4) It rolled through at the worst time possible around 3 to 4am, virtually nobody is awake at that time.

The real toll will end up around 275 lives lost, the scope of the destruction is beyond what many can fathom.

It was the 'perfect storm' in a lot of the worst ways.

Hard to fathom the quantity of water crashing through, and there is no upstream flood control because we are basically talking about the headwaters.

I saw houses in a neighborhood adjacent to the river that had been there for several decades. They are built on an area that is elevated and well out of the river bed - a few hundred yards from the water - and they got flooded or even knocked off the foundation.

More focus on early warning etc might help a little, but I'm not sure there's much of a better answer than "well, I guess we have to go even higher."
nein51

Does early warning help? People have a tendency to ignore the warnings and at that time of the day how many people would even have heard/noticed?

At some point we have to accept that life has risks and make reasonable decisions based on those risk calculations.

I think that's right. There will be lots of blame flying around about how much warning people got when etc but ultimately I agree. This was a 3 sigma event that happened at the worst time of night, not much real warning was available under the best of circumstances, and it's unlikely it would've made a big difference.

That's why I keep coming back down to "all you can do is go higher." That's easy to say now, of course, but based on prior flood events most of them already thought they were higher...

Found out this morning a girl from my HS class was there with husband and son. Sadly they all passed away.

I had not talked to her since the day we graduated but it makes it even more real (not that it wasn't already) he someone I knew personally was involved, even if it has been years since I talked to her

Hurricanes are a great example. There is plenty of advanced warning.

Every hurricane is going to be the "storm of the century!" and eventually people stop listening, they stop evacuating, they stop caring…and then the big storm does come.

Yes. And even with all the advanced warning, satellite photos, etc the hurricanes are still unpredictable. They don't know where it is going, when it will change directions, how powerful or devastating it will be, etc.

The media only seeks to assign blame for hurricanes when a Republican president is in office (Bush 41 & Andrew, Bush 43 & Katrina). When local Dems showed obvious negligence in preparing adequately for disaster (New Orleans, LA wildfires, etc), the media covers it up they do for Dem crimes & scandals.

Hurricanes give you plenty of time to get ready and hit the road. Most people around me leave if its a cat 3 or more. My wife usually freaks out and gets a hotel in Ashevill, Charlotte or some city out of the way and if the hurricane changes course its usually too late to cancel so we end up going out of town for a day or two. Its a crapshoot bc I would rather stay put even if its bad bc i'm pretty sure unless its a direct hit cat 5 that my house will be fine and I'd rather be here to guard my neighborhood from possible looters.

I didn't bite on anything.

Grok did.

I did think it was funny but I concede it was probably an inappropriate distraction for the reasons you stated.

And you never expressed any kind of outrage over the Hurricane Harvey aid requiring a loyalty pledge to Israel. I hope that stupid law was repelled. It never should have been passed in the first place.
