Christ never preached hatred towards anyone. And he certainly never taught anyone to hate Jews since He was one Himself. He told us to love our neighbor as ourself.

And if any group of people is satanic, it's those who go against God's teachings, especially those who abuse scripture to promote lies (ie Talarico).

The evangelical right will happily go antisemitic if and when the time comes. Take this thread. 100+ pages devoted to vilifying Nick Fuentes, and the OP admits he would vote for him over a Democrat. They are all about political expediency.

Yeah, I think his patriotism has been hijacked. He should reclaim it and put it to good use.

What an absurd statement. In the hypothetical you posed of "pick your poison," yes I'd choose the conservative with anti-Semitic views over the degenerate who supports transing children, killing babies in the womb, open borders and in general anti-Judeo Christian mores. So would any conservative.

The idea that means I'd join Fuentes in his anti-semitism is just utterly stupid logic. One can disagree with a candidate on certain positions - even vehemently so - and still vote for him as between two fallible options. It's incredible to me that concept is just completely lost on you.

I disagree with Trump on a lot and find some of his beliefs disgusting. But he's still miles better than Kamala

The irony in all of this is it's not the evangelicals who are the antisemites in the party, but instead your fellow Catholics. If your original statement had been "The Catholic right will happily go anti-Semitic if and when the time comes," I wouldn't have disagreed, as there is ample evidence of that already occurring.

If I softened my approach Sam, you would take my place as the most hated man on Sicem365. I cant have that.

I admire that you are willing to vehemently defend your opinions even when they are unpopular. From one man to another, I respect that!

Any bigot, regardless of political views, is not following the teachings of Christ. Christ taught live, not hatred.

Sane people refuse to vote for Dems because they are crazy with crazy ideas and evil agendas. That's the intelligent and rational thing to do regardless who the opposing candidate is.

Finally, it's nearly impossible for a bigot of limited intelligence like Fuentes being nominated for any office. Suggesting him as a candidate is a red herring. Dems voting for similar crazies is far more likely as we've seen this happen repeatedly with DSA candidates across the country.

Indeed. And as pointed out above, Catholics have historically been far more anti-semitic in their views than Evangelicals, which is one of the reasons the Vatican has had to promulgate edicts condemning anti-semitism in the Catholic church throughout its history.

Ironically, many of today's most hateful, vocal right wingers - like Nick Fuentes and Candace Owens - are Catholic. So I think there's a bit of projection going on here with Sam.

Still a straw man? Sam didnt say Catholics weren't guilty of anti-semitism. I'm pretty sure he has mentioned many times how he views it as problem in the Church. That's why he's one of the most honest posters on here.

I don't think "straw man" quite fits here. I never suggested Sam said Catholics weren't guilty of antisemitism, so that's not a position I'm attributing to him or attempting to refute.

My point was simply that his broad generalization about Evangelicals was ironic given the historical issues with antisemitism within Catholicism and some of the more prominent examples on the Catholic right today.

You can certainly disagree with that comparison or think it's beside the point. I just don't see how it's a straw man, because I'm not mischaracterizing Sam's position and then arguing against that mischaracterization.

Sam is one of the most intellectually dishonest posters on this board, and has been for years. But I get why you admire him. Your politics are somewhat similar, though I think Sam has a much more authoritarian and non-conservative bent. He was a huge proponent of govt. authoritarianism during the rona virus.

It's a straw man if you are misrepresenting his position. You are bringing up anti-semitism within the Church as if he's suggesting that it's only a problem with Evangelicals. But his statement had nothing to do with Catholics, they are totally irrelevant to the conversation. All he said was evangelicals will quickly abandon their beliefs/morals depending on the ballot.

And if not strawman, it's whataboutism.

But I disagree, my politics are quite different than Sam's. We are both Catholic and maybe have similar opinions on Israel but that's about it.

My apologies, but I was speaking of the evangelical right as a voting bloc. Evangelical voters as a group haven't shown the ability to set boundaries or hold politicians accountable for racist rhetoric and policies. Of course there are exceptions, including some here who have refused to toe the MAGA line.

In more than one place.

It's ironic is sometimes amusing to see how often someone will accuse [x] of some terrible thing, while ignoring any similar issues with his own group and community. It's also important to apply context to these discussions, as there is a lot of emotional investment into rhetorical positions.

The problem with Islamic violence, in my opinion, is that it's historically undeniable and is growing in frequency and in locations. Add to it the apparent rise in Muslims demanding Sharia law in US communities, and the worry that we could see things get ugly here quickly is obvious.

I happen to know a fair number of Muslim families in my neighborhood, and they are by and large the same as anyone else in their desire to live peaceably and get along with everyone. But that happens where Muslims are a small minority, and small minorities always try to get along with everyone. And Muslims who are polite and quiet are notably averse to standing up against Islamic violence - they generally just act like it isn't happening.

I understand that expecting someone to act the way you believe is appropriate is often unreasonable, but the complete lack of any major organized protest by Muslims against the violence is eerily similar to the behavior or mainstream Muslim groups in places where violent extremists are now terrorizing the public.

There's no simple way to describe the matter, and efforts to discuss the problem rationally also tend to run into angry groups demanding you join their cause and support their opinion.

But I disagree, my politics are quite different than Sam's. We are both Catholic and maybe have similar opinions on Israel but that's about it.

I think you're subtly rewriting Sam's statement into something much more defensible than what he actually said. He didn't say "some Evangelicals compromise their principles for politics." He said "the evangelical right will happily go antisemitic if and when the time comes." That's a sweeping claim about a religious/political group (despite his current attempts at revisionism).

I never claimed Sam said Catholics were free of antisemitism, so there's no straw man there. And mentioning the historical record of antisemitism within Catholicism isn't "whataboutism" if the point is to challenge the justification for singling out Evangelicals for a sweeping denominational generalization. It's a comparison bearing directly on the generalization Sam made. And it's particularly ironic because Sam purports to be Catholic.

If I'd said, "Catholics have been antisemitic too, therefore Evangelical antisemitism doesn't matter," that would be whataboutism. But that wasn't my argument. My argument was: if we're going to make sweeping claims about the susceptibility of entire Christian traditions to antisemitism, the comparison is relevant and the broad brush becomes pretty difficult to defend.

Fair enough, though, on your political differences with Sam. I wasn't intending to lump the two of you together politically. Your positions are much more conservative than his, undoubtedly. Sam is no conservative.

Grace abounds. But grace doesn't require credulity.

If he had said, "I went too far, that was an unfair generalization, and I apologize," I'd have nothing more to say.
Instead, he's claiming that what he really meant was something materially different from what he actually said. An apology should own the offense, not rewrite it.

Forgive him, certainly. But there's no obligation to assent to a false account of what happened as the price of forgiveness.
