They're arguing that X and Y are not the sole identifiers. Science pretty much agrees on this. There's so much more at play when it comes to gene expression. And sex can be changed in a lot of ways depending upon one gene being turned on or another one turned off. And that happens in nature -naturally- a lot.
What science is discovering is that gender is more of a spectrum. Some men are more "manly." Some women are more feminine and some are less.
We keep trying to force it into a binary, and that just isn't reflected in the facts.

Much of this is social science that conflates gender behavior within societies and cultures with simple genetic variances. The ideas of "manliness" and "femininity" are social constructs. But there are clear biological differences that don't involve some type of physical abnormality like intersex. All we're doing is proving that biology can be tricked by environmental influence, or in some cases the addition of chemical alteration (hormone therapy). First off, I love this comment. You're right on, that MUCH of what we call gender is socially constructed. It's completely arbitrary.
However, there is more to it than that, and we're only just beginning to understand it that. For instance, there are physical attributes that we call "manly" such as natural muscle structure, hair growth, Adam's apple, etc. there are the same for women such as breast development, etc.
Those are not social constructs but are still signifiers of "manliness" or gender. However, they can be found in different sex expressed in different ways.
And beyond that, there's the gray area of affect which is probably a bit socially constructed AND physical manifested.
