Your daily tracking update. NY/NJ continues to produce half the fatalities. Michigan and Louisiana showing relevant increases, but still nothing close to NY/NJ.
Currently growing fastest in Louisiana, with Michigan about the same as New Jersey and all of them faster than New York.
Volume is more important than rates in these early stages. Louisiana is growing the fastest and hopefully we'll see a tapering off as the numbers get larger. That's why I'm more concerned with Michigan as they're seeing volume and they have population too. Not like NY/NJ, but Detroit metro has as many people as the entire state of Louisiana.
Volume is always low in the early stages. Rates determine what volume will be later.

Rates are always higher early but then the laws of big numbers take over and rates tend to taper off. It's why even with significant declines in growth rate in NY/NJ they are still producing troublesome volumes. Meanwhile you have the available numeric base being lower in New Orleans so your ceiling is capped. That being said, I'm not underplaying the growth in New Orleans I'm saying Michigan is more worrisome from an overall perspective.

I was hoping the growth rate would slow - seems to be holding around 13%. Mortality rate eclipsing 3% is concerning.

The law of large numbers is inapplicable. A smaller numeric base is the reason volume is irrelevant. A severe disease is no less severe when it runs through a smaller population at the same rate.

We'e managing exposure at a national level. The severity of the outbreak is dictated by volume, otherwise we wouldn't be taking stats. Seeing something spread rapidly through a large metropolitan area is much more concerning than the factors that cause a spread in a small group. It's easier to contain smaller outbreak areas than larger ones. I'm really not sure the point you're attempting to make.

Rapid spread is no less concerning in a smaller group. Containment is mostly moot at this point, and in any case the geographical area of the outbreak is unrelated to the population factors you're talking about.

Sure. I'm a conservative. I give Trump credit for everything that makes us number 1.

I'd have preferred just kicking this mother****er in his shorts come November.

Lets hope we never surpass H1N1 in infections, which were 61 million. Catastrophe if that ever happened.

There's no valid reason to bring up H1N1, especially when that same person complained about comparisons to the flu earlier in this wave of discussions.

I despise hypocrisy, especially since Tommie is usually better than that. So I called him on his crap.

Sure hope they are right that daily deaths top out at 2,400 or so.

Adjusted for population in France with 1/5th population they would be up to 7000 a day. Even the UK adjusted for population would be at 4000 a day.

That is really bad, and could still happen here, if we don't stay separated.

Yea. When they quite working, this might work out ok.

Sure. I'm a conservative. I give Trump credit for everything that makes us number 1.

I'd have preferred just kicking this mother****er in his shorts come November.

Yea. When they quite working, this might work out ok.

Sure there is. Many posters used H1N1 as a measuring stick, calling Obama's performance terrible based ont hat death number. So did POTUS.

Those comparisons are stupid and do a disservice to both men. The diseases were different. Because H1N1 has much, much lower fatality and hospitalization rates, Obama never faced the type of emergency that Trump did.

But if POTUS and his followers want to use that H1N1 as a measuring stick, that is their choice. tommie just did the measuring they invited.

H1N1 is brought up as a comparison every day on this site, with many complaining that H1N1 was "worse" but we didn't have to do this social shutdown. I don't follow Tommie's posts well but I imagine he's simply drawing those posters' attention to the fact that if that's the measure they insist on using, we're now there.

We'd agree it's sad we've gotten to this number. With the implementation of continued closures I'm optimistic we'll get things headed in the right direction soon.

There is no comparison like you say here. Shoot I had H1N1 twice, both forms of it. When my temps reached 104.9 the second time, I went to the Doctor for the first time in about a decade.

Like I mentioned before, if there were over 60 million infections like with H1N1 it would be catastrophe. Coronavirus is supposed to be over twice as contagious, I imagine if we did nothing, like we did with H1N1, close to half the population would get it, and 1 to 2 million of us would die. If not more.

So let's not make those comparisons.

Then you are fast to reference H1N1 when you can score points in a debate off it.

You seriously claiming you don't see the hypocrisy in that?

And if you go back and look at older posts, not only did I not try to blame Obama re: H1N1, I said early on that Presidents depend on their experts to give them good information which they rely on in their own decisions.

So on this my hands are clean, and you need to walk your cheap shot back or admit you are just like those you want to complain about.

And I specifically said that the comparison was stupid-each POTUS was presented with wildly different concerns. That is the opposite of scoring points.

He has every right to showcase how stupid it was to compare COVID and H1N1 in the first place.

That was used as the benchmark by many here as proof that this virus was a nothingburger. The truth is that they are very different viruses and destined to be a stupid benchmark.

Heck here we are 3 weeks into a shutdown and we still have 1,800 people dying today.
