Van Alstyne ISD has made the decision to only offer On-Campus instruction

Van Alstyne ISD has made the decision to only offer On-Campus instruction beginning Monday, November 2, 2020. Remote instruction will only be offered to students who are ill or on quarantine due to COVID-19. The factors which were considered in making this decision were the following:

1. Students enrolled in Remote Instruction have been mostly unsuccessful in completing and mastering the material. The failure rate for Remote Instruction is 63% compared to 7% for face to face learners. Therefore, Remote Instruction has proven to be ineffective and inappropriate for a majority of our students. The district believes that in order to limit the learning gaps that are being created, we need to have these kids on campus for instruction.

2. The rate of positive cases for Van Alstyne ISD has been relatively low thus far this year. Since the beginning of school, we have had 4 staff members, 0 elementary students, and 13 secondary students. We currently have 0 active cases. We believe that our safety protocols and the hard work of the students and staff have contributed to this trend.

Public safety and health are a high priority for the district. However, we feel that these COVID numbers, coupled with the learning gaps being created, do not justify continuing to offer Remote Instruction. Students who are currently enrolled in Remote Instruction have 3 options:

1. Return to on-campus instruction.
2. Withdraw to homeschool.
3. Withdraw and transfer to another public or private school that offers online instruction.

If you are returning to on-campus instruction, be aware that the second 9 weeks started on October 19th. Therefore, it is important that you make your decision as soon as possible. Beginning November 2, 2020, ONLY on campus instruction will be available
Lots of Texas school districts doing this for the same reasons.
I don't hear much about how cases are going in Texas schools. I did see that of the football scores reported statewide by the DMN on Monday (pretty much gets all games) there were, I believe, 24 games that had to be cancelled.

Vitamin deficiencies linked to respiratory conditions, including COVID-19

People who consumed recommended amounts of the three key nutrients were less likely to develop the flu, colds, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma, the data showed.

Research has linked vitamin D, in particular, with boosting immune system function, and being deficient in the nutrient has been found to increase a person's risk for severe COVID-19.

It is such a chore. I didnt go to college to be a Spanish instructor for an 8th grader, that job is available and I dont want it lol.

My kid's district has offered people the option of home or in person and its about 1/2 and 1/2. They reported last week they have had 2 confirmed cases and tracing showed neither happened at school, both happened at weekend events.

If we werent co-parenting with nut jobs we would have sent him back to school already.

Economic growth boomed in the third quarter. Nevertheless, there is still $670bn, or 3.5%, of GDP to make up before the entire loss from the lockdown recession is recovered. To make that up in a single quarter, GDP must rise at a 15.1% at an annual rate, which is unlikely. Nevertheless, the economy could fully recover in the first half of 2021, especially if vaccines are highly effective.

TORONTO -- More than 80 per cent of COVID-19 patients at a hospital in Spain had a vitamin D deficiency, according to a new study.

Researchers at the University Hospital Marques de Valdecilla in Santander, Spain looked at the vitamin D levels of 216 patients admitted to hospital for coronavirus treatment between March 10 and March 31.

For the study, the 216 hospitalized patients' vitamin D levels were compared to those of a control group of 197 people of similar age and sex from a population-based cohort in the same geographical area.

Back in the day, people cited any number of European countries that are now seeing rising cases as examples of how to beat the virus.

How COVID impacts different populations is complicated and populations in various countries are unlikely to be equally susceptible to dying from this virus for any number of reasons. Those who want, for political reasons, to latch on to single and simple explanations are going to do exactly what you have done.

The elephant no one wants to face is that the virus has aerosolized, and the micron size is significantly smaller than even what an N95 mask guarantees to prevent penetration 95% of the time. It's also likely hanging in air currents and seems to even resist quick death by sunlight as originally hoped for. This is on top of its surface survivability which is amazingly resilient. The way we mask in mass isn't going to help us, especially when so many wear the equivalent of a dishrag for air absorption like bandanas and gaiters and homemade cloth ones.

Prevention is failing outside of sanitizing and isolation, and even isolation depends upon how you do it. So the strategy has to shift to immune boosting and body defense preparation. We can hold off on the praising, no one is out of the woods and the journey is still far.

I think geography has to also be looked at for those nations "doing well". Mostly islands and/or isolated peninsulas (South Korea). Makes people containment and flow restriction easier, not to mention the liquid buffer zones for air current transfer.
