Seriously, I would not dare to claim I knew someone overall by one or two recollections from decades ago.

As you see here Rush gave plausible deniability for hate and disrespect.

He said stuff people who liked his program thought but "it wasn't serious" until it was and national debate started to get downright nasty and uncivil and Republcians elected Donald Trump, who also said that stuff, and legimized Limbaugh.

But listeners who agreed with Rush get off with a version of the same logic that got Trump off the hook for trashing more than half of the US population, the thing about taking him seriously but not literally.
